I've seen it in place at the Chaos Communication Congress in 2014, I used it with a couple of clients without issues. Not sure what was used or how much effort the configuration was.

Except in Germany, where it's a big “U” (for U-Bahn).
IMHO, in a corporate solution like that described in the OP, 2) makes a lot more sense.
EDIT: By the way, you source is about 802.11b. Very specific case, and also quite old.
