mpitt··on Ask HN: What are you reading these days?
"Phi: A Voyage from the Brain to the Soul" by Giulio Tononi

Having just finished "On the move", Oliver Sacks' autobiography.

mpitt··on Invidious – An open source alternative front-end to YouTube
Huh, could be that the doc is outdated then. Thanks for the info, maybe I'll give it a try after all!
mpitt··on Invidious – An open source alternative front-end to YouTube
Interesting, from the doc[1]: "Because of various issues Invidious must be restarted often, at least once a day, ideally every hour."

[1] https://docs.invidious.io/installation/#post-install-configu...

I guess it's related to this issue, a memory leak (or probably multiple): https://github.com/iv-org/invidious/issues/1438

Also interesting that the issue is almost 3 years old and mentions even older reports.

mpitt··on Free stuff makes us irrational
Big "one study says" energy in most of the points here. I also think it would be more honest to write the percentage of people who chose neither of the chocolates in the same size as the other numbers.
mpitt··on Operations is not Developer IT
That sounds great in theory, but what happens if your dev/ops ratio is something like 15/1? How do you put an ops person in every team? I think it's the right answer but it seems impossible to put in practice.

mpitt··on Cleaning Up Your Postgres Database
One of the newest kids in the block is Loki (by Grafana) [1]

We're starting to explore it in production and it's looking very promising. Much, much simpler (especially to integrate) than ELK.

mpitt··on Plausible Analytics Isn't GDPR Compliant
Consent is one of the legal bases for processing personally identifiable information[1]. There are five more, among which "legitimate interest" can cover a variety of cases.

mpitt··on To Know If the Election Was Hacked, Look at the Ballots
This video from 31c3 explains some reasone why it's not that simple. The speaker is the author of the OP.

mpitt··on See the things you’ve searched for, visited, and watched on Google services
Whoops! It actually said 2061 but my fingers autocorrected that for me :/
mpitt··on See the things you’ve searched for, visited, and watched on Google services
Wow, I know Google knows a lot about me, but apparently it can predict that I'll use Telegram on March 15, 2016 at 4:53 AM!

(Either that, or my phone briefly had a very incorrect time setting.)

mpitt··on The Science Behind Honey’s Eternal Shelf Life (2013)
I think it refers to the background radiation increase due to atomic bombs, see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-background_steel

Edit: a nice plot https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Radiocarbon_bomb_spi...

mpitt··on AI produces realistic sounds that fool humans
It fools humans more often than a baseline algorithm.

What that means in numbers, they carefully avoid saying.

mpitt··on USB-C and Lightning headphones aren't great news for everyone

Check again. "The USB Type-C Specification 1.0 was published by the USB Implementers Forum and was finalized in August 2014." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_Type-C)

mpitt··on Reimagining the future of routers
(Assuming GB/s is really Gb/s, gigaBIT vs gigaBYTE.)

mpitt··on Basic income plan clearly rejected by Swiss voters
Change the title? It's misleading to imply the results are final.
mpitt··on How and Why to Log Your Bash History
I've just tried and I can't reproduce. It might be because you're copying a leading space: if a command is prefixed by white space it doesn't get saved in the history.
mpitt··on The Estonian president wants a more digitally-integrated Europe
Not exactly, because of ballot secrecy. Nobody, not even you, can prove what you voted (or didn't vote) with a paper ballot. This is the primary countermeasure against coercion and bribery of the electors.

With e-voting, providing ballot secrecy becomes much more complex because at the same time you need to prove that every voted is counted as it was cast.

mpitt··on The Estonian president wants a more digitally-integrated Europe
The reviewers found terrible opsec, lack of an appropriate threat model, and demonstrated the feasibility attacks both on the vote counting server and on the voting client.

For more information you can watch the video I linked above or read a summary here: https://estoniaevoting.org/findings/summary/

mpitt··on The Estonian president wants a more digitally-integrated Europe
I was watching this just yesterday, a thourough (it seems) review of the Estonian system.

mpitt··on E Ink announces a full color electrophoretic ePaper display
I'm more interested in "responsive" research papers. Once you write your source in LaTeX, it shouldn't be difficult to compile it in a format that fits on a regular e-book reader.
