mpascale00··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
I agree insofar as this may fall on deaf ears of AI folks, but that the goals are differ is exactly the point of pointing out misalignment. To talk about this may be more useful for coalescing professional societies than for conversing directly with AI advancers.
mpascale00··on Codex Micro
Even the name "work louder" seems to encourage some sort of post-literacy future; I find it off-putting.
mpascale00··on Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt
Seems like this post might have put them out of stock.
mpascale00··on Identify a London Underground Line just by listening to it
It was fun to guess these without being familiar. I sort of guessed based on vague knowledge of age and name familiarity. Maybe I was lucky.
mpascale00··on Does 'Laziness' Start in the Brain?
Suffering from executive dysfunction obviates that there is no free will, and it's as if good health is simply having that illusion work out harmoniously.
mpascale00··on Language is primarily a tool for communication rather than thought (2024) [pdf]
I think you make a good point that much of what we call thinking is really discourse either with another ^[0], with media, or with one's own self. These are largely mediated by language, but still there are other forms of communicative _art_ which externalize thought.

The other thoughts here largely provide within-indivudal examples: others noted Hellen Keller and that some folks do not experience internal monologue. These tell us about the sort of thinking that does happen within a person, but I think that there are many forms of communication which are not linguistic, and therefore there is also external thinking which is non-linguistic.

The observation that not all thought utilizes linguistic representations (see particularly the annotated references in the bibliography) tells us something about the representations that may be useful for reasoning, thought, etc. That though language _can_ represent the world it is both not the only way and certainly not the only way used by biological beings.

mpascale00··on Attention lapses due to sleep deprivation due to flushing fluid from brain
Even if this is a possible factor it most certainly would not be the only cause.
mpascale00··on Scientific fraud has become an 'industry,' analysis finds
Agreed. I have never heard a scientist use this phrase, but I've heard plenty of left leaning folks use it. As left wing politics absorbs science as it's cause - and not a cause that everyone is for - I fear it actively turns right leaning folks against science solely because of it's mindless support by progressive folk.
mpascale00··on Compressing Icelandic name declension patterns into a 3.27 kB trie
I disagree. You can read a book or listen to a record, watch a dvd, unlimited times, having fairly paid upfront a price for the item. A computer is general purpose and lets you check your email every day, hell even lets you create new value in the form of new software, without the manufacturer receiving a royalty.

The idea of capturing reward post-receipt is feudalistic.

mpascale00··on Compressing Icelandic name declension patterns into a 3.27 kB trie
Profitable for sure, but I'm often half surprised by the lack of competition against subscription-based everything these days.
mpascale00··on Hiding secret codes in light protects against fake videos
Without having read into this deeper, it sounds like someone could take an original video which has this code embedded as small fluctuations in luminance over time and edit it or produce a new video, simply applying the same luminance changes to the edited areas/generated video, no? It seems for a system like this every pixel would need to be digitally signed by the producer for it to be non-repudiable.
mpascale00··on Compressing Icelandic name declension patterns into a 3.27 kB trie
This comes up in so many threads here... How can we change the culture of subscriptions back to pay once???
mpascale00··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
I mean, are the phones themselves really making money off ads or are those totally separate companies? I don't disagree that this brings in business, but I don't agree that this is a significant motivator in terms of phone sizes
mpascale00··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
Number one factor for me when buying a phone is how long is it going to last. I mean durability, camera quality, os updates. Will I still want to use/be using it in 5 years?

I cannot justify $700 as much as I _really want a smaller phone_. But _maybe if it was built to last_ I would be the customer and I would tell all my friends.

Currently use a Pixel 7a because it was cheap and OK. I was debating the iPhone 12 mini but it was already a little old, and I prefer Android.

I suspect, if others are like me, that those who want small phones also just want something that works and is a little minimal - not necessarily all the power best camera etc. To be clear, I _don't_ want one of those minimalist dumbphones, I want _a smartphone_ that's small Do y'all feel the same?

Propose a $500 small phone that's OK on specs but LASTS.

mpascale00··on NeuralOS: An operating system powered by neural networks
This brings personal nostalgia to when I was very young and made an "OS" in PowerPoint using links between slides, animations, and the embedded internet explorer object. Similarly, I'm not sure I see any practical use in this. Still it's a really fascinating conceptual demonstration of networks understanding intent in the complex state-machine that is a graphical user interface.
mpascale00··on Scientific Papers: Innovation or Imitation?
Certainly other field are competitive, but the current AI boom has been ridiculous for a while now. As an outside observer, the competition seems to be for the final money, prestige, or whatever the top papers win, rather than competition at the level of paper acceptance...
mpascale00··on Scientific Papers: Innovation or Imitation?
To add to that, I agree with the basic sentiment of the article - but it just doesn't seem to be the reflections of an academic. Ending with optimism about AI, to me, makes me think the author believes AI will solve a problem they are not well acquainted with.

Perhaps one expects overgeneralization in consulting blogs though

mpascale00··on Scientific Papers: Innovation or Imitation?
The thesis here is not well elaborated on. Ref [1] for example seems to me to miss more recent progress on our understanding of working memory, and in linguistics, while Chomsky's work is foundational, we have a much better idea now of how the requisite compositionality of behavior necessary for language might arise in the human brain.
mpascale00··on The Danish Ministry of Digitalization Is Switching to Linux and LibreOffice
Ofc I love this, as a LibreOffice exclusive user Document signing in Libreoffice on Linux has caused me nothing but trouble, and other critical features a government might want to have - any thoughts on this?
mpascale00··on We came to be ruled by Death Eaters (2014)
and though the provided biology was vague, I do think it's valid that societal tipping points depend on the fact that individual psychobiology does in fact and obviously cause such intense feelings.
mpascale00··on [dead]
Generally I agree that this article is throwing vague reference at hormonal processes, but on the other hand I do think that American society's allergy to touch, restriction of all physical closeness to mates only is unnatural and contributes to the dehumanizing aspects of capitalism with which it is associated.
mpascale00··on DumPy: NumPy except it's OK if you're dum
In the way that `ggplot2` tries to abstract those common "high dimensional" graphing components into an intuitive grammar, such that you may in many places be able to guess the sequence of commands correctly, I would love to see an equivalent ergonomic notation. This gets part way there by acknowledging the problem.

Mathematical operations aren't obliged to respect the Zen of Python, but I like the thought that we could make it so that most have an obvious expression.

mpascale00··on Ask HN: Has anyone been able to overcome crippling executive dysfunction?
Out of curiosity, how do you describe your medication making you hyper focus on anything other than work? My psychiatrist has told me that means it's working, yet I feel like it is just a different sort of dysfunction.
mpascale00··on I don't like ChatGPT's new memory dossier
This certainly hurts research. Suddenly every response is trying to tie in some general themes I've asked about in the past, and the already mediocre quality becomes pandering garbage. I cannot use ChatGPT to discover new things as effectively if it's always using every prior interaction in its context.
mpascale00··on Glamorous Toolkit
Another HN reader confused here. I have no idea what this tool is or what it's for or how it's helpful from your website. I think it's a development and documentation tool of some sort, but even that took a little poking around to figure out. At first I thought perhaps this had to do with LLMs.
mpascale00··on Accessible open textbooks in math-heavy disciplines
Out of curiosity, are there models for speech synthesis which generate speech parametrically and then refine neurally?
mpascale00··on Increased risk for all-cause dementia in people who abstain from alcohol
Interesting indeed...

> Experimental evidence in animal models is consistent with this observational research, confirming the neurotoxicity of heavy alcohol use and the protective effects of alcohol at low doses.

> increased dementia risk associated with abstaining was evident after controlling for relevant demographic and clinical characteristics

mpascale00··on “Harbinger households” consistently buy products that get discontinued (2019)
I suspect anything marketed towards older people is likely to decline as that population shrinks. If this is true then in many ways it may be a good thing for this population that products are created for their preferences at all.
