moystard··on Vivaldi Browser: Chrome engine, no personal data collected
It might be in terms of performance and energy consumption, but it is clearly not when it comes to privacy.
moystard··on Theresa May to create new internet controlled and regulated by government
I actually don't, it was a mistake on my side, I meant isolationism.
moystard··on Theresa May to create new internet controlled and regulated by government
It's crazy how much this country has changed since I moved in the UK in 2010. I originally moved here because London was a city encouraging tolerance, freedom and respect for each other. Technology wise, this city was also the heart of Europe with a great pool of companies and engineers to achieve big things and counterbalance the hegemony of the Silicon Valley and the US.

Every new proposal these days from the UK government is pushing an authoritarian government, and the Brexit has given them an excuse for more populism and isolationism.

As a French man, I moved here because of all these reasons. I had a job in France, a good situation, but I wanted to discover, meet new people, enlarge my horizon. Today, I am not sure that London and the UK are the right places for that.

moystard··on Growing Ubuntu for Cloud and IoT, Rather Than Phone and Convergence
It takes courage to reflect on previous decisions and re-consider your product strategy. I am quite impressed by Mark Shuttleworth decision to move away from Unity and the desktop/phone convergence that has been slowing down innovation for Ubuntu, and allowed other distributions to catch up.

Every Linux users should benefit from this decision; I am excited to see the improvements they will make to the Gnome environment.

moystard··on Don't add your 2 cents
The issue is that many will think themselves qualified. It would be too easy if the Boss/Senior in the case described in the article was aware of their non qualification in the domain.

I think the article is simply that if you are pushing for a very small change, one that would make not much difference, and is just a matter of opinion, then don't do it as it will impact negatively the original author.

moystard··on Canonical, Ubuntu, and Why I Seem so Upset About Them All the Time
Could you please list (or give a summary) of those gazillion spying features?
moystard··on Ogo, a new take on personal transportation
The same way one can walk, or run, the person using the device can adjust his or her speed to their conditioning. I don't really understand the dismissal of the idea because one could go fast with it.
moystard··on Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition
How can something like that make you batty? For sure Ubuntu phone will never invite you to upgrade ...
moystard··on From Fastmail back to Gmail
In terms of privacy, the issue is that most people out there use GMail, Yahoo Mail or Outlook, so even if you self-host or use a privacy aware service, when you'll send emails to others, or receive them, your privacy won't be fully respected anyway...
moystard··on The new MacBook
I really love the Finder Quick Look option using the space key, so you can have a quick pick without using a pane.

Apart from that, Windows Explorer is definitely above the Finder that has been stalling for years now...

moystard··on The new MacBook
Something that is definitely wrong with Linux is font rendering, it is really hard to get something decent, even when using tools like Infinality.
moystard··on SWEATSHOP – I can´t take any more
It looks like there is only an English trailer for now.
moystard··on Windows 10: The Next Chapter [video]
I use Git Bash personnally as a command line when on Windows, and I find it brilliant.
moystard··on Windows 10: The Next Chapter [video]
Finder has always been disappointing in my opinion. Regarding the two windows side by side, you should have Spectacle a go, it works wonder, but the feature is indeed not included in OSX. I have always found the way OSX manages windows to be confusing, and the new fullscreen behaviour does not help (I know alt clicking the full screen button shows the previous behaviour but still...)
moystard··on Windows 10: The Next Chapter [video]
I am an OSX user primarily but I have never seen this kind of behaviour on any of my Windows installation. There is something wrong in what you describe.
moystard··on Hater News – Now for Twitter and Reddit
I have the same problem when looking for my username on Twitter.
moystard··on Adobe Brackets hits 1.0
For now my biggest frustration is that Atom does not 'remember' the files/folders I was working on the last time I had it opened, and the Reopen last item does not seem to work at startup.
moystard··on McFly – Flux Architecture Made Easy
React can be used without a Flux-like architecture. It can also be integrated in a MV* application, see Backbone React Component[1] for example that uses Backbone Model for rendering React components.

moystard··on Adobe Brackets hits 1.0
I often use Grunt or Gulp for my projects along with the connect/livereload plugins so that's not critical to me when choosing an editor.
moystard··on Adobe Brackets hits 1.0
When I had first installed Atom a few months back, I had performance issues as well, but it does not seem to be the case anymore with all the work they put in the editor's performance last summer.
moystard··on Adobe Brackets hits 1.0
I have been a Sublime Text user for quite some time now but I am always interested in open source software, especially when they are built using web technologies. I decided to install Atom.io today and was surprised by the performances, the features (especially through the package system really close in richness to Sublime's) and the overall quality of the editor. For Brackets users out there, how does it compare?
moystard··on [dead]
I don't think it should be considered as blogspam. The author has a point, the Linux desktop is not a success, especially among "non technical" users. However, I don't agree with his conclusion, I think it can change through the convergence strategy between the mobile and desktop Linux variants.
moystard··on KDE Plasma 5
I tried it, as well as Gnome Do, but it is far from being as feature complete and extensible as Alfred.
moystard··on KDE Plasma 5
I could not have said that better: I actually love the keyboard oriented approach of Unity. If you further install Unity Tweak Tool / Ubuntu Tweak, you can also get keyboard shortcuts for tiling and organizing your application windows. I used to be a Gnome Shell user, but Unity has definitely convinced me in its last version and I feel more productive than ever, as I rarely have to touch my mouse when coding.

If only there was a decent launcher on Linux, I could definitely put OSX behind me.

moystard··on Ask HN: What is the best laptop for Linux?
Did you try installing tlp (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/TLP) for your battery problems? I usually get the same battery life as if running windows.
moystard··on Ask HN: What is the best laptop for Linux?
Flux is actually available on Linux: https://justgetflux.com/linux.html. Regarding Alfred and Dash, there are some Linux alternatives (Gnome Do, Synapse for the former, Zeal for the latter), but they are far from being as good.
moystard··on Ask HN: What is the best laptop for Linux?
I have wondered the same thing for quite some time now and I decided to simply install Ubuntu on my 2013 Macbook Air. Everything works out of the box (except the iSight webcam), and with a bit more polishing, you get good battery life and trackpad gestures.

Before taking that decision, I had read plenty of reviews of various models, but could not find a decent PC out there that would be both light, and powerful, with a good screen (something the MBA might not be best at to be honest). The best results I found were the Yoga 2 Pro (but Linux compatibility does not look great), and the Asus NX500 that has not yet been released, and that appeared to be disappointing based on pre-production version reviews.

moystard··on The Past, Present, and Future of the CPU, According to Intel and AMD
The gaming community is globally aware that investing in an expensive CPU is not the best choice. Gaming performance will depend mostly on the GPU, and most gamers go for an AMD configuration for that specific reason.

Regarding the mobile usage, I think Intel has a clear advantage as their CPUs are more powerful and more efficient.

moystard··on Show HN: NomadList – The best cities to live and work remotely in
I was going to suggest the same feature: healthcare and more generally public services are a very important factor when deciding to settle somewhere. Too bad most of these websites seem to think cost of living is the #1 factor.
moystard··on Show HN: GameDevs.com, a social news site for game developers
Good to give your opinion, but you could do it in a constructive manner.
