mousethatroared··on Babies made using three people's DNA are born free of mitochondrial disease
"The issue where I am is that all adoption agencies facilitating adoptions from other countries have shutdown. All of them because of massive scandals where the adopted children was more or less sold or the parents where lied to."

Specifically, American parents tried to return to sender a kid they didnt like. Ie they thought they deserved a kid.

"Adoption from abroad is tricky at best, and now it's no longer possible. [...] That's not to say that there aren't children being adopted, but the waiting list is 10+ years."

Being a parent is a about giving yourself away. If you cant do that you're not ready or suitable for a kid.

"Most children are placed in foster care, which is very different."

Who deserve loving families.

Look, I haven't adopted a foster kid: because Im scared Im not good enough; I admit it. But let's not pretend that there aren't a plethora of kids in need of families that we must have IVF for those who are not capable of conceiving their own.

Most Americans are OK with many things, that doesn't make them right or wrong.

I'm OK with being alone, that doesn't make me right or wrong.

It does mean I have courage of conviction though.

A lot of things are "hard wired" and yet we expect people to control themselves.

Men's sexual drive, for example, is tuned to fairly rapey if not for a "patriarchal" society that crushes this drive through the threat of a girls father beating a boy to a pulp. Stats are pretty clear here too wrt sex workers and their relationship to their fathers.

And IVF is a tragedy of rented wombs, unfulfilled motherhood dreams, expensive and painful surgeries almost exclusively brunt by women whilst profited by men.

But I'm not worried. A society that inverts the child-parent merit is one whose open loop gain is less than one. It's pretty obvious why: those who think children are deserved are unlikely to have the ability of self-sacrifice to want more than the one, maybe two kids.

mousethatroared··on New York’s bill banning One-Person Train Operation
Kinda ironic that it took a civil war the last time it happened.

They belong to the state.

But these things can be negotiated in the divorce

mousethatroared··on New York’s bill banning One-Person Train Operation
First step the state has to want to split, though. And I guarantee you that the red capitols (most of them) are game.

That leaves a small hurdle of getting a couple of purple states. Perhaps a great compromise is reached - NY ex-NYC merges with PA ex-Philly and Philly joins NYC.

mousethatroared··on New York’s bill banning One-Person Train Operation
I think NY state concurs wrt to NYC.

So why don't y'all split the state up? NYC in one corner, the rest of NY on the other.

Then upstate folk will get real political representation in Albany, and NYC will send two interesting senators to DC. As much as I disagree with AOC I'd love for her to become a senator.

mousethatroared··on Ring introducing new feature to allow police to live-stream access to cameras
Obviously i don't have Ring.

But everyone else does, so what's the point? My privacy is always compromised because tech junkies (as opposed to techies) insist on indulging in stupid things like 21 and me, Gmail, or Ring and I get swept along with it.

Sick kids need parents too.

And there's plenty of foster kids, like Dave Thomas who was adopted as a foster kid.

So was my friend D. D's adopted parents asked the state of NJ for the kid that needed parents the most. And boy did the state of NJ deliver.

D had a foster home raided by the FBI. Another foster house beat him. He didn't know how to read until grade 5.

Now he has masters in microbiology from a top 20 program, a job as a data scientist and he's making the better part of $200k to take care of his wife and three kids.

As annoying as he is (he is from Jersey), I know he's a guy I can call who will show up to help.

All because a couple of God fearing parents asked NJ for the most messed up kid in the system. For me, D's parents are saints.

It's sick that our society thinks people deserve children instead of the other way around.

mousethatroared··on Babies made using three people's DNA are born free of mitochondrial disease
No one deserves kids. Kids are not goods to buy off a shelf.

Rather kids deserve parents.

It's literally an inversion.

Strictly speaking no, dogma has a very specific definition and refers to things of a theological nature like the dogma of the Immaculate Conception which 90% of American Catholics wouldn't get right (most would answer that it refers to the virgin conception of Jesus).

That doesn't mean the Church's teaching isn't final and binding.

By vector graphics I meant primitive graphics.

Outside of youtube and... twitter? I really don't need fancy stuff. HN is literally the web ideal for me, and Id think most users if given an option.

mousethatroared··on A 14kb page can load much faster than a 15kb page (2022)
Why do I care about fonts? Honestly, if my browser had an option not to load fonts and use my default to save load time I ld choose that 19 out 20 times.
mousethatroared··on A 14kb page can load much faster than a 15kb page (2022)
A question as a non user:

What are you doing with the extra 500kB for me, the user?

> 90% of the time in interested in text. Most of the reminder vector graphics would suffice.

14 kB is a lot of text and graphics for a page. What is the other 500 for?

Half agree.

The other half, as a very conservative Catholic, conservative Catholics are neglecting our great teachers like Dorothy Day.

Did you condemn Obama when he droned an American child and laughed that the kid had chosen bad parents? Did you call for his impeachment then or now? How about when he sicced the IRS on conservatives?

Did you call for Biden's impeachment when he coordinated with social media companies to violate American 1A rights?

Did you vociferously condemn what Biden enabled in Gaza?

Unless you too add these boiler plates on your messages you are full of it.

Ya but manufacturers believe, rightly, that folks will always prefer battery life to pocket confort.

I say this as someone who clung onto his 1st gen SE until I got my current 13 mini

mousethatroared··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
Larger phones have better battery life time.

Screen power draw and battery capacity scale as the square of the linear dimension. They largely cancel out.

However, all the other hardware are a fixed size so proportionally large phones have longer battery lives.

mousethatroared··on A 1960s schools experiment that created a new alphabet
I learned to read in foreigner and soon after moved to an English country at age 6.

I was an atrocious speller until I moved back to foreign-land and had to take English class with my schoolmates.

Learning how people mispronounce English phonetically fixed most of my spelling.

"The issue here is that no one can agree on which portion of government spending is wasteful."

Human nature, I guess

"It’s almost taken as a tautology that the government is wasteful. After 50 years of cost cutting and wage freezes," These cuts are not reflected in government spending vs GDP is mostly flat for the last 40 years

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/FYONGDA188S

Note that in the 1970s the US was paying for moonshots and Vietnam (both filthy expensive)

"I tend to find it fanciful that individuals paid 1/4 of their private sector compensation to work on core civil infrastructure, national research priorities, and policy are somehow a bad deal for the American taxpayer at large. "

Ya, that's not a thing. I worked in government, I still work on government projects and no one outside the NSA is getting paid a 1/4 of their private sector compensation. Maybe a 20% hit which they chose to accept since, in my experience, most start as contractors and move to become feds for the job sec + benefits.

Frankly, Id say half of the government employees I worked with are unemployable. And they most of them had at least a STEM masters.

"If anything, I’d imagine that the government could incentivize greater productivity by normalizing the pay scales. At a minimum, maintaining a public capability can often neutralize monopolistic pricing practices."

I don't necessarily disagree.

"Have you considered who the narrative of wasteful spending benefits? Even our narratives of tax increases never discuss tax increases on what is now the bulk of personal monetary gain."

Ive considered it a lot in fact. One of the main beneficiaries appears to be the DC area which was the only region of the country not to have a recession in 2008 and has been outpacing most of the country in growth for thirty years.

The main beneficiaries, thus, are the laptop-class (and their billionaire masters) which is a new way of saying mandarins.

The one who lacks nuance is not the one who thinks NASA could stand to shave a couple billions but the one who's making everything a partisan fight.

For me, Linux became a viable desktop OS when Steve Jobs killed flash and browsers could render any page independently of the OS.

Then Office 365 came around and I could do quick work w/out a windows machine.

mousethatroared··on Congress moves to reject bulk of White House's proposed NASA cuts
I disagree.

Instead of looking at where the tax revenues can come from, which I don't necessarily disagree consider what proportion of the nations economic activity is government spending.

I consider govt spending/GDP a much better indicator of economic health. In fact, tertiary_sector/GDP is better still.

The US government has too much presence in the economy and can't even provide health care and free tuition.

mousethatroared··on Congress moves to reject bulk of White House's proposed NASA cuts
The conversation was about NASA, an agency that poured billions to Boeing and the United Alliance and was forced to accept SpaceX (way back during the Obama admin, I believe) whilst kicking and screaming.
