mostertoaster··on An abundance of Katherines: The game theory of baby naming
Yeah I chose “boring” names for my kids.

I do think the best names are ones with the most meaning.

You name a kid Isaac, you could be naming him after Isaac Newton. It puts something on to him.

If you name a kid William, maybe you hope he will be the next Shakespeare.

Simply by naming someone something, you imprint something on to them. The history and power of a culture.

Yet for this very reason, especially when people see the culture as dark, they choose unique names, names that say you can be who you want to be.

Though I think I still prefer old names, looking at names of people who have done something, and then hoping to do something similar.

I think this is kind of why a convert to an orthodox Christianity, from some heterodoxy, or atheism, or from the religion of the “infadels” takes a new name in baptism. They hope to live up to whomever. If you take the name Theresa at baptism with a sense of obligation to love the lowly like Mother Theresa and so on.

Wonder if other religions do similar things?

mostertoaster··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
This made me think: the thing Microsoft has been good at for a very long time is developer tools. Think about how much better visual studio is was than Xcode.

If Microsoft focuses copilot on simply making things more enjoyable rather than do the work for you, I think it will be an amazing thing.

mostertoaster··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
I don’t know if Copilot has made me more productive, I think I get the same stuff done, but I think it has made getting the stuff done more enjoyable. At times with better quality at times with worse probably.
mostertoaster··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
Definitely have not. Are police in Seattle, or SF better then?
mostertoaster··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
What about Miami? I would not think a black/brown gay or trans person would feel uncomfortable there?

Or is it like the state politics? Like someone who loved Portland might hate eastern Oregon, but the state of Oregon as a majority is more progressive so it’s ok?

Personally I care far more about local politics/culture than state or national politics/culture and would rather be in a state opposed to my way of life, while in a city that isn’t, than vice versa. Though ideally both, but can’t always have it all.

mostertoaster··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
When I was at UW in the dorms I felt bad for the students who came from southeast US, they’d start school like end of September, and then leave beginning of June and go back home and essentially only get the worst of western Washington weather, and miss out on what is absolutely amazing weather and sunshine in the summer months.

If we only experienced western Washington for those months hardly anyone would stay, but those summer months are so incredible it makes it worth enduring the dreary gray for a good amount of people.

mostertoaster··on LLMs and the End of Programming – CS50 Tech Talk with Dr. Matt Welsh [video]
Higher level languages did make the ability to write a program in assembly language far less relevant.

LLMs could end something akin to that, but not programming itself.

mostertoaster··on Toyota Patented an EV Manual Transmission That Stalls, so It Feels Real
Lol that is so silly, but if I was buying an EV and all else was equal I’d totally choose having a fake manual transmission with that “feature”.

Manual transmission cars are still way more fun to me, unless I had to drive through Seattle or SF or something.

mostertoaster··on Desalination system could produce freshwater that is cheaper than tap water
There are always trade offs.

As someone who has essentially unlimited access to clean drinking water, I might not feel the trade off is worth it.

But if I was someone who didn’t have a superabundant supply of clean drinkable water, I’d probably say to hell with the sea life.

mostertoaster··on Do Machine Learning Models Memorize or Generalize?
Sometimes I think the reason human memory in some sense is so amazing, is what we lack in storage capacity that machines have, we makeup for in our ability to create patterns that compress the amount of information stored dramatically, and then it is like we compress those patterns together with other patterns and are able to extract things from it. Like it is an incredibly lossy compression, but it gets the job done.
mostertoaster··on Ask HN: What are your optimistic takes on the SWE job market post AI?
As I’ve heard we will probably overestimate what will happen in the next five years and underestimate what will happen in the next 10.

How much did the internet itself change coding, not a lot, then a whole bunch.

I think since the industrial revolution the most valuable jobs are those that require the most distinctly human traits. With AI doing things we typically only thought humans could do, that will shift.

Soon we will have interviews where you are expected to use chat GPT to solve the interview question.

mostertoaster··on Street fighting engineers vs. martial arts engineers
When I first read the headline I read it as the engineers behind the game street fighter.
mostertoaster··on The “Free and Open Internet” Hypocrites
If our way of life could be destroyed by a bunch of youths going on tik tok because of how the algorithm is setup, we’re already screwed, and banning it is futile.
mostertoaster··on Seattle startup founders, investors react to new state capital gains tax
Yeah I definitely want to leave Washington state if they continue down this road.

For a time the state was socially liberal but still pretty business and tax friendly but there are too many greedy people who want to get their hands on that wealth entrepreneurs are creating.

And to build schools!? I already private tuition and our school could stand for some improvements, and our teachers deserve a bump in salary, but no we’re going to go tear down some perfectly usable elementary school to make a new more environmentally friendly one.

The money from this tax will only fatten the pockets of the bureaucrats, and will do little to nothing for the average person.

Washington in a nutshell.

mostertoaster··on JPMorgan says the U.S. is probably headed for a recession
What really sucks though is how much those who happened to acquire assets at the right time will do ok, and those who didn’t are SOL.
mostertoaster··on JPMorgan says the U.S. is probably headed for a recession
And this is news? Hasn’t that been completely obvious since the fed was forced to hike interest rates?

Nothing in life is free, and the easy money we had, especially post COVID craziness, at some point has to have a cost.

mostertoaster··on Arkansas: No need to age verify kids working in meat processing plants
That was my point. People would justify the one because it is “dangerous” for more subjective reasons, even though the other actual leads to real physical danger. But you could argue the other danger is more insidious and ultimately would harm more children.
mostertoaster··on Arkansas: No need to age verify kids working in meat processing plants
This could maybe interpreted as saying the online world is more dangerous than a meat packing plant. That doesn’t seem too far-fetched.
mostertoaster··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
I want my company to have a giant vault stacked with Benjamin’s.

Every payday I come down and they shell it out and put it in my hand.

Then a disgruntled but genius employee comes up with a crazy heist scheme and I get caught in the middle of it getting my pay one payday.

mostertoaster··on GraphQL vs. REST APIs: a complete guide
The main issue that happens with both REST and GraphQL, is that people spend more time thinking of how to implement their thing, than what the API should be.

The complexity GraphQL adds _can_ be worth it for its ability to better represent a business domain via an API. If you don’t care how well your API represents your business domain, then likely your API is going to suck, and you might as well have a sucky REST api and avoid the complexities of GQL.

mostertoaster··on Explanation of the Domino's Pizza tracker
Oh yeah. I order one 2 topping large pizza a week, for $5.50. Three lunches.
mostertoaster··on Stop Saying “Technical Debt”
I find the most helpful way to think about it is to think that most tech debt is introduced by the product manager. A product is built according to spec, and then the spec changes, a new feature is added, a performance characteristic is changed, and now the engineer has tech debt he must resolve to satisfy the product manager’s spec.

This changes the conversation to where tech debt is good, but so is paying it down. Good engineers will better anticipate the possible future changes in requirements and design for them and will incur less “tech debt” to pay back when product adds a feature.

mostertoaster··on Revenue is easy, profit is harder
“This forced other disciplined startups to loosen their ad spend to be competitive in the venture-market industry and created an era of capital-inefficient businesses. With time, this will re-adjust back to historical norms and the process will be painful.”

I thought this was a pertinent quote.

You’re going to see many companies deciding to become cash flow positive instead of growing. And if the business is stable, the quickest way to get there is to drastically cut operating costs…

mostertoaster··on Gitlab to lay off 7% of staff
Maybe they didn’t. Still smoke and mirrors though, we “gained” 500k jobs, even though payrolls would show a decrease in 2.5m. But it was expected we would lose 3m seasonal jobs. So voila! It’s like when the government says we saved 50 billion in spending this year because we were planning on increasing spending by 150 billion, but only increased it by 100 billion instead.

I’m not saying Biden is only one that does this, but the economy sucks, and those think the spin put out at the state union means otherwise, are like those who admire the naked emperors clothes.

mostertoaster··on Gitlab to lay off 7% of staff
The “good jobs report” is just smoke and mirrors to have something positive to say at the state of the union. Changing how you measure the number of jobs so it looks better is just par for the course for politicians. Using the old measure that 400k over the 100k expected is 20k less than expected.
mostertoaster··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?

I enjoyed reading this. Thank you. Specifically how you beautifully put “Japan is too good for that”, in a way that both compliments and criticizes at the same time.
