mortallywounded··on Ruby 3.3
It's nice to see improvements to Ruby, but the hype around a ~13% performance boost feels... weird.

It looks like a big leap, but when you compare the actual speed to _any_ other language you realize Ruby still has many, many percent to go to even be in the same game.

mortallywounded··on Show HN: Weeks of Your Life
I've felt that way since my mid-20s because I started "late" professionally. I've been playing catch up ever since.

Although I've had a lot of success by conventional means (I run my own company solo, work for myself, I'm married with children, I own my house with no mortgage, etc).

My sights are still higher and I feel like I'm still playing catch up. I've been debating about what to focus my time on these days-- do I push more on my business and attain more success? Do I allow myself time to pursue interests that have little to negative financial upsides? Do I forget all of it and just spend that time with my family?

Wish I had a solution or answer for you, but I'm still figuring it out.

mortallywounded··on You don't need analytics on your blog
Only if you self host or proxy all of the tracking requests. Otherwise, the tracking will occur but get trapped in the browser. The moment your code tries to send the request to hotjar or any other domain, it's blocked.

Or more likely, all of your cameras disabled by ublock.

I log traffic. I use log rotate with a 30 day rotation. No one can complain because it's gone within a GDPR compliant window of 30 days.
mortallywounded··on You don't need analytics on your blog
Because hotjar and other such things are incredibly invasive?

Instead of the simple Ruby script, I think GoAccess is better. It's a simple command line tool available in nearly all package managers. You can simply pipe your logs to it and get an ncurses based summary of the site.

zcat /var/log/nginx/access.log* | goaccess

mortallywounded··on I spent a year building an app and failed – The story of Taskwer
True-- but a regular job you may work 40-50 hours a week and have many other benefits (like health insurance, and so on). Most people making games (especially on their own) put in far more hours, zero benefits and a lot less money.

I have nothing but respect for people that do. I've dreamed of it. I could never pull the trigger though. I can't justify putting four to seven years in a game to make pocket change out of it.

Sure... the creative aspect is great. Having players enjoy it is great. But eating and keeping my house is pretty good too.

mortallywounded··on I spent a year building an app and failed – The story of Taskwer
The problem I have with this is $500/month is a lot more than $500 per-month. Hear me out.

If Steam is taking 30% and uncle Sam is taking 35%, $500 is really $175. You need to earn roughly $1450 per-month to make around $500 per-month. Of course, that doesn't count any marketing/domain/asset/license/etc fees.

mortallywounded··on Windows and macOS targeted by new Go-based malware
Alright--- Go _does_ scale.
mortallywounded··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
I wish there was a "frameworkless" version. Just include the JS/CSS/Font(s) and paste the html and there you go.
mortallywounded··on Ask HN: How do you decide a non-fiction book is worth your time?
Honestly, I default to "it's not worth my time."

If something keeps popping up and the answer is, "Damn, I should probably have just read that book." then I get a copy of the book.

mortallywounded··on Dear ImGui: Graphical User Interface library for C++

People wonder why their Electron apps use 16GB of memory.

When is the Next.js/Vercel rewrite?
mortallywounded··on Show HN: ScrapX – Monitor the websites of your competitors
This screams lack of confidence. Why not focus on your own product and ignore others?
mortallywounded··on Ruby 3.3's YJIT: Faster While Using Less Memory
Yes-- unfortunately I've been downvoted to hell for even suggesting we discuss other languages in comparison.
mortallywounded··on Zombie fly fungus lures healthy male flies to mate with female corpses (2022)
Sounds like the perfect incel cure.
mortallywounded··on Ruby 3.3's YJIT: Faster While Using Less Memory
I get the need to improve Ruby's speed and memory usage, but there's much to be desired. I really enjoy Rails and Ruby in general, but the performance is terrible.

I'd like to see how Ruby 3.3 stacks up to other languages and runtimes.

mortallywounded··on Data exfiltration from Writer.com with indirect prompt injection
Yeah-- but it's fun, flirty and exciting in a dangerous way. Kind of like coding in C.
mortallywounded··on Ask HN: Daily practices for building AI/ML skills?
Does it? I have an MS, but never put it next to my name. I'm doing well :)
mortallywounded··on Voyager 1 stops communicating with Earth
Is it though? If it takes 22.5 hours to get there, the response is another 22.5 hours. It's not a new fact, it's a universal limitation.
mortallywounded··on Japan says reason behind 1,200 tonnes of fish washing ashore is unknown
Uh huh, did the people that said it, drink it?
mortallywounded··on TV Detector Vans
I can only imagine the faux ignorance when a TV inspector knocks on your door and asks if your TV is running.

"Huh, TV? I don't have a TV..."

mortallywounded··on Proton Mail gets a desktop app for encrypted email and calendar
I've been using Proton for my businesses for years. I have a legacy visionary plan that is _very_ generous based on current limits/prices. I don't have any plans on going anywhere else!

My only gripe has been searching email is a pain.. you need to download/index the data locally (due to encryption on the server), and the search quality isn't great. I am confident they will improve the search algorithm/filters in time... but you'll still need to download all of your mail to search (no way around it I know of unless some clever crypto people can figure that one out...).

mortallywounded··on Ask HN: Daily practices for building AI/ML skills?
> I will say there’s pretty much nothing they taught me that I couldn’t have learned myself. That said, school focused my attention in ways I wouldn’t have alone, and provided pressure to keep going.

I have a masters degree in computer science and took a fair share of ML graduate courses. That pretty much summed up what I was thinking. They basically forced me to sit and learn something I wouldn't have alone.

Now-- I'm not saying you need to go to grad school. You could buy some ML textbooks and force yourself through them and go from there... but how many people have that grit? I wouldn't have been one of them :)

mortallywounded··on Ask HN: How do you do personal backups in 2023? (Google and Dropbox issues)
A linode box with a combination of deja dup that runs daily (encrypts and rsyncs to the linode box).
mortallywounded··on Why we’re dropping Basecamp
> We came to this decision after weighing the level of its use in our organization, which is considerable, against the harms that we see perpetuated by the leadership of Basecamp

What... they speak like DHH is running around raping women and curb stomping people. The dude wanted people to stop talking about politics at work and made it a rule and he wasn't pro-race weighing for college admissions.... so? He's suddenly anti-minority? When in fact it's asian and white people that seem to be discriminated most for admissions.

mortallywounded··on Adobe's buy of Figma is 'likely' bad for developers, rules UK regulator
I tried for a while back in 2022 when Adobe announced acquiring Figma. I spent a week with Penpot. It's pretty good, but there were a number of issues that forced me going back to Figma... mainly random freezes and issues causing me to lose saved work.
