moribunda··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
This data seems wrong. Wholesale potato prices rose 5-7times over 10 years, and actually 2016 was the dip, so more like 5x over the long term

Tried to read it, switched to the polish version... So much AI slop... At least review it and fix this "american to polish direct translation"

moribunda··on I cancelled Claude: Token issues, declining quality, and poor support
And it leaves 25 TODO comments in code silently, reporting to you that everything is done.
moribunda··on How I use Claude Code: Separation of planning and execution
I made no assumptions about you - I simply commented on the post replying to your comment which I liked and simply wanted to follow the point of view :)
moribunda··on How I use Claude Code: Separation of planning and execution
The crowd around this pot shows how superficial is knowledge about claude code. It gets releases each day and most of this is already built in the vanilla version. Not to mention subagent working in work trees, memory.md, plan on which you can comment directly from the interface, subagents launched in research phase, but also some basic mcp's like LSP/IDE integration, and context7 to not to be stuck in the knowledge cutoff/past.

When you go to YouTube and search for stuff like "7 levels of claude code" this post would be maybe 3-4.

Oh, one more thing - quality is not consistent, so be ready for 2-3 rounds of "are you happy with the code you wrote" and defining audit skills crafted for your application domain - like for example RODO/Compliance audit etc.

moribunda··on OpenAI should build Slack
Slack was a sluggish version of IRC... And somehow the world bought it.
moribunda··on OpenAI should build Slack
Also if you are using language with more than 24 letters - like you know, most of the world... You can't do {left alt}+n in teams while {right alt}+n works perfectly fine, and I haven't found a way to disable this awful behavior.

Like mate - I'm on Mac, I use CMD+n for new tabs, not windows-like shortcuts...

moribunda··on Semantic Compression (2014)
Well, one might think it's not hard to predict that you will have to use buttons in the game editor more than once...
moribunda··on Social anxiety isn't about being liked
I second this suggestion. This might sound obvious but during my therapy my psychologist asked me to do this, but in a non-personal/non-threatening way for the relation. Just by telling them that I'm working through my issues and I'd like to get an honest (best would be written/no-interaction type) feedback - what makes them uncomfortable etc. This helped me a lot - to see how different the transmission was on the receiving end from my intentions.

moribunda··on Speeding up PostgreSQL dump/restore snapshots
While these optimizations are solid improvements, I was hoping to see more advanced techniques beyond the standard bulk insert and deferred constraint patterns. These are well-established PostgreSQL best practices - would love to see how pgstream handles more complex scenarios like parallel workers with partition-aware loading, or custom compression strategies for specific data types.
moribunda··on Echo Chamber: A Context-Poisoning Jailbreak That Bypasses LLM Guardrails
Gemini is jail broken by design ;) this type of attack doesn't work on Claude.
moribunda··on Structured Output with LangChain and Llamafile
I don't get the langchain hate, but I agree that this "blog post" is bad.

Langchain has a way to return raw output, aside "with structured output": https://python.langchain.com/docs/how_to/structured_output/#...

It's pretty common to use a cheaper model to fix these errors to match the schema if it fails with a tool call.

moribunda··on NotebookLM Audio Overviews are now available in over 50 languages
You should check new features - like asking questions as a listener.

I don't use it a lot, but it's useful when you want to have an engaging audio interface to long (50p+) reports, which you wouldn't normally read because it's not your area of expertise or you don't have time, but you can listen while doing some cardio or chores.

moribunda··on Chain of Recursive Thoughts: Make AI think harder by making it argue with itself
Exactly... I thought that implementing STORM was just a basic step in this topic... Looks like we're running in circles.

moribunda··on I Followed the Official AWS Amplify Guide and Was Charged $1,100
Well, then enterprise won't use it.

OTOH for example the default quota of 55PB (yes, go check it) for your daily limit of data extraction from GBQ is funny, until you make a costly mistake, or some forked process turns zombie.

This is predatory practice, that I can't set up MONEY limits for cloud services.

moribunda··on FTC's rule banning fake online reviews goes into effect
Shouldn't this be the link - not some 5-sentence summary? https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/...

It would make many comments here pointless if commenters started from reading this:

The final rule prohibits:

Fake or False Consumer Reviews, Consumer Testimonials, and Celebrity Testimonials:

The final rule addresses reviews and testimonials that misrepresent that they are by someone who does not exist, such as AI-generated fake reviews, or who did not have actual experience with the business or its products or services, or that misrepresent the experience of the person giving it. It prohibits businesses from creating or selling such reviews or testimonials. It also prohibits them from buying such reviews, procuring them from company insiders, or disseminating such testimonials, when the business knew or should have known that the reviews or testimonials were fake or false.

Buying Positive or Negative Reviews:

The final rule prohibits businesses from providing compensation or other incentives conditioned on the writing of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, either positive or negative. It clarifies that the conditional nature of the offer of compensation or incentive may be expressly or implicitly conveyed.

Insider Reviews and Consumer Testimonials:

The final rule prohibits certain reviews and testimonials written by company insiders that fail to clearly and conspicuously disclose the giver’s material connection to the business. It prohibits such reviews and testimonials given by officers or managers. It also prohibits a business from disseminating such a testimonial that the business should have known was by an officer, manager, employee, or agent. Finally, it imposes requirements when officers or managers solicit consumer reviews from their own immediate relatives or from employees or agents – or when they tell employees or agents to solicit reviews from relatives and such solicitations result in reviews by immediate relatives of the employees or agents.

Company-Controlled Review Websites:

The final rule prohibits a business from misrepresenting that a website or entity it controls provides independent reviews or opinions about a category of products or services that includes its own products or services.

Review Suppression:

The final rule prohibits a business from using unfounded or groundless legal threats, physical threats, intimidation, or certain false public accusations to prevent or remove a negative consumer review. The final rule also bars a business from misrepresenting that the reviews on a review portion of its website represent all or most of the reviews submitted when reviews have been suppressed based upon their ratings or negative sentiment.

Misuse of Fake Social Media Indicators:

The final rule prohibits anyone from selling or buying fake indicators of social media influence, such as followers or views generated by a bot or hijacked account. This prohibition is limited to situations in which the buyer knew or should have known that the indicators were fake and misrepresent the buyer’s influence or importance for a commercial purpose.

moribunda··on Math is still catching up to the genius of Ramanujan

[...]the day I started reading educational research was the day my life changed.

It all began with Daniel Willingham’s Why Don’t Students Like School, which led me onto his ridiculously good series of Ask the Cognitive Scientist articles for the American Federation of Teachers and the associated research papers he quoted. I devoured them all with eyes wide open and jaw firmly on the floor. Next came Cognitive Load Theory, which I was introduced to via the incredible blog of Greg Ashman and our subsequent conversation on my podcast. I was familiar with the work of Dylan Wiliam through the development of my Diagnostic Questions website, but I read and re-read everything I could get my hands on from the great man. I didn’t think life could get any better — and then I came across the work of Robert and Elizabeth Bjork. Good God.

One thing led to another, and before I knew it I had read well over 200 hundreds books and research papers. I would wake up in the middle of the night, my head buzzing with ideas[...]

moribunda··on Microsoft CEO's pay rises 63% to $79M, despite devastating year for layoffs
So... He's doing his job, managing a company with over 200k employees, increasing revenue and company value, and earning 0.0003% of the company yearly revenue (0.0008% of net income) for it... #shocking

But yeah, MSFT closed few game studios and this news is from a website about gaming industry, so it has to be bad, it is evil, people are losing jobs...

moribunda··on Before you buy a domain name, first check to see if it's haunted
Basic SEO stuff, you have marketplaces that check history, you have domain search engines aggregating data from multiple sources - not only ahrefs.

Checking web archive is a basic operation to test if site was hosting anything fishy - not only pirated stuff or porn - often websites has been hacked and changed into link farms or simply were bought on aftermarket simply to use it's SEO value to pass the strength to other domains.

Anyways good point regarding email filters.

moribunda··on A lonely man in his 30s found welcome and community at spin class
Commenting on such topics on hn makes me want to have some kind of footer with a/s/l/salary/social class etc.

I'm from central/eastern Europe, and I feel a little bit of WEIRD bias [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychology#WEIRD_bias] in many opinions presented here.

I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm just finding myself more and more blocked when it comes to discussing such topics.

Your friends have friends of different sex - I get it, but for how long we would have to debate here to check if there really is no sexual tension there. Where does relationships come from then in those groups? None of those friends become pairs/partners? There are no ex-lovers who after 10-20 years are coming back together from the "friendship phase". Etc.

On the other hand, I never said that there is only sexual tension. Just that it's hard for me to imagine a world where it's not important.

moribunda··on A lonely man in his 30s found welcome and community at spin class
You're dumbing it down.

But I envy you living in a snowflake world without insecurities, cheating, divorces, etc.
