mooreed··on How to Win an Argument with a Toddler
Post reminds me of the absolutely lovely Monty python skit [1] that is not only humorous, but has a lot you can learn from.

mooreed··on XiangShan – Open-source high performance RISC-V processor
This project is the first that tickles my brain in the right serendipitous ways; it merges topics of my recent interests.

However, after a VERY short perusal, I grew a giant sense of empathy for non-native English speakers. The readme is gentle enough to English speakers (aka: +95% English) no less I felt like I muddled through renaming tokens in my mind as I went. However, that quickly showed me two things.

1. It reminds me why I never seem to finish classic Russian literature… so often get lost in the introductory parade of names that are a cache miss for my usual set of names.

2. This is perhaps a significant cultural muscle that has never been necessitated for English speakers. Since the earth has largely been using English (in some capacity) for significantly longer than my life span - as my favorite joke says in the punch line “what do you call someone who only knows one language… uni-lingual… jk: American”

PS: it seems like there could be an open registry maintained by “Americans like me” who would rather pre-process the code for tokens within the docs and src… seems like a “DefinitelyTyped style” definitions registry would be very niche, but SUPER useful.

mooreed··on Show HN: I mapped HN's favorite books with GPT-4o
Nice project.

I also would love to hear more about the cluster shapes and cardinality of the coordinate system. I consider myself am pretty versed in data analysis, however with less expertise on NLP topics (eg t-SNE).

So a quick blurb like: the units on the axes in the graph are “a reduced embedding space” designed to keep structure and to reduce the dimensionality such that the clusters could be plotted on screen…

(I’m not even sure that’s correct, but I would have loved for you to have informed me on the one sentence visualization choice and then point me to t-SNE.)

Overall nice project - and it reminds me of a painful professional analysis lesson I have had to re-learn more than once.

> After working for NN hours on an analysis, and finally breaking through and completing it, overlooking the title and labels is the biggest footgun I have ever dealt with.

mooreed··on Goodbye integers, hello UUIDv7
Feels like a spiritual successor to the ksuid [1] lib which I first heard of used in conjunction with DynamoDB

[1]: https://github.com/segmentio/ksuid which has very similar use cases.

mooreed··on JSON Schema Store
Does anyone know of a typescript translation for each of those validation models?

Or maybe even a way to discover related statically typed definitions based on the validation rules?

It would be really nice to not define parts of a data model that provide little to no business value - but where you can easily “stub your toe”.

mooreed··on Ask HN: A Better Docker Compose?
At the risk of sounding clichè/unhelpful.

> “you can solve every problem by adding or removing an abstraction layer”

Have you considered generating your YAML/JSON config with something that composes?

If you are open to it you might be interested in dhall [1] as it’s a config language with variables, functions and imports.

I have used it for pet projects and I could see how it could offer some tidy encapsulation patterns for larger, more complicated production applications.

mooreed··on Tell HN: Tired of Hearing about ChatGPT
Honest Question: Isn’t the future of AI image generation (of all kinds) and AI-driven Chat all predicated on some human signal for future training? Otherwise it will have future training sets including its own output…

So far the human signal was that text and images were crafted by humans, of course with some tooling.

However as the universe of images and text corpuses grow, they will embody the idiosyncratic nature of the AI generation process. And those “glitches” as has been called higher in the thread, will potentially get fed-back into the training data set with out some filter using a human-signal, if even just an AI human-signal.

See https://nopecha.com/ (I’m not affiliated) and plenty others.

mooreed··on Congress.gov API
At first I was amused to consider what a ‘POST, PUT, DELETE’ means for this API. Then I realized that the conceptual meanings are straight forward. Then I realized that democracy is a fancy authorization regime for doling out ‘write access’.

(Added edit) I too agree with the sentiments that a v2 should have a finer grain resolution where the data model would recognize a bill as a collection of clauses or statements. And attribution and intent of those clauses would be transformative (I think) for regular citizens.

Because then the internet would be able to track unintended consequences by author. This is arguably what the internet does best.

mooreed··on Color has been disappearing from the world
I love the scientific discussion here, but much of this seems to miss the idea of “millennial minimalism”. The preference tends towards plain/simple buildings so that nature can have the main stage.

Have no fear Gen Z is a pendulum towards radical 90s colors.

mooreed··on Show HN: I hacked my son’s Duplo train to go faster using my voice
I highly recommend the accompanying youtube demo video [1] - but only if you enjoy a hacker dad singing fausetto to propel his son's toy train faster around the track.

mooreed··on Show HN: Searchable offline archive of browser history
Looks fun reminds me of Google Desktop search from way back in the day - you know back in the days of google also selling a search appliance for enterprise data centers.

mooreed··on Show HN: Tool to track star history and stats of public GitHub repositories
I have always been interested in the star trajectory/ history of various projects. But I suppose I will have to wait till I get to my laptop. This is TOUGH to use on mobile.
mooreed··on Statement from Mark Zuckerberg
Honestly I have been so happy with the unreasonable effectiveness of RSS readers. It’s just incredibly delightful, and wish it weren’t as niche. However, perhaps I should revel in its ability to fly just off the radar.
mooreed··on Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley reaches one billion views [video]
Of all the random internet memes and love affairs. I am always grateful that the internet chose this one early on. It just as easily could have landed on Selena Gomez, or insert other artist who has catchy ear worms - but might not have aged so gracefully.
mooreed··on Laser pulse travels 300 times faster than light (2002)
This is fascinating. And after reading every comment - it makes me wonder when people are saying something like “right, it arrived before it left”

1) I am understanding the affirming responses? Aka is the above summary a correct characterization?

2) it feels like this (and related older research) would be the closest thing to a future telling machine - but with limited application “did I press the button?” The observer would perhaps know before the button presser albeit by tiny margin.

This can’t possibly be right, someone help me out here if you would be so kind.

mooreed··on Texas to allow unlicensed carrying of handguns
As a Texan, I am dumbstruck by the often austere nature of the state legislature.

I think the concealed handgun license (CHL) is the backbone of Texas gun-culture. Where someone goes from “regular citizen” to very adept at handing firearms and additionally having an understanding of the laws and regulations for those firearms.

CHL holders are a very real force in Texas. This feels like 2 steps backwards; it even feels like it caricatures the “John Wayne Texas” that so many imagine. Perhaps Texas feels like the “crazy drunken uncle Yosemite Sam” for some states. But hopefully anyone who has been to SXSW or the Super Bowl a few years back, or to Houston for business...hopefully you have seen that beyond the boots and funny accent most of Texas is not that different from other states.

So even though it’s legal, living in urban Dallas, TX - I have never seen a long barrel weapon held by non-law-enforcement in public. This is a very good thing in my personal opinion.

Plenty have brought up the Joe Rogan quote of “people in Texas are nice because you never know who is carrying [a gun]”. In my opinion this observation suffers from “correlation is not causation.”

Texas culture transcends my fear of being shot - which I almost never dwell on. Texas people are fierce practitioners of rugged individualism. With that, comes a bit of “don’t tell me what to do”, and as the belt-buckle of the Bible-belt there is a real culture of Protestantism that permeates more than meets the eye.

TLDR; Texas legislature tries to out Texas the rest of Texas.

mooreed··on Show HN: I made a non censor social platform, no account needed for posting
I love the unfettered optimism. But I can’t imagine a scenario where it does not get proliferated with SEO backlink games at best. And at worst terrible terrible pictures
mooreed··on Ask HN: What are the best websites that the Anglosphere doesn't know about?
Great question. +1 for my interest too.
mooreed··on Show HN: Expresso: A faster, drop-in replacement for the ExpressJS router
I think it’s likely an easy switch for most people. But I would not over look the documentation of when does it not make sense. This usually engenders more confidence in the maintainers vision or perspective on how they achieve the performance gains. Since after all so much of the work you are doing comes down to making trade offs.
mooreed··on Show HN: Expresso: A faster, drop-in replacement for the ExpressJS router
Nice work. It always gives me heart burn when the docs say “basically the same” because now I have to do some digging to determine if the performance gains are worth my understanding if I am inside the “basically same” use case or in the “unfortunately slightly different or unsupported” use case.

Not to mention standard community/ ecosystem/ migration risk.

mooreed··on Tillis Releases Text of Bipartisan Legislation to Fight Illegal Streaming
What is the fate of `dl-youtube` with respect to this legislation??

I don't see any discussion in the thread - and find that the recent dust up over this type of DRM gray area use is more than correlated with this type of new legislation.

After the obligatory IANAL [1]: the fate of `dl-youtube` would be tied to your ability to construe `dl-youtube` as a digital transmission service based on §2319C.a.2.

To me seems like the the risky clauses of §2319C.a.2 are : `primary purpose` and `publicly performing`; where primary purpose is tough because their is author intent, and then the proportions of real-world usage, and `publicly performing` is actually a pointer not to common usage of the phrase, but to definitions set forth later in the document.

mooreed··on The CIA's Deadly Deceits and the Vietnam War, with Ralph McGehee (1986)
The hardcover and paperback versions, that the post is based on, are selling for 430 and 967 respectively. [1] Another fun example of crazy Amazon pricing - looks like a price gouging individual/algorithm who is riding a wave of scarcity.

mooreed··on Show HN: I Rebuilt MySpace from 2007

mooreed··on Show HN: Read the frontpage of today's New York Times
Is it still working? I tried it and it redirects to an NYT CDN page.
mooreed··on Why I am building permapeople.org
Sounds like a fun idea. And there would be a large community overlap with https://farmbot.io - something I have wanted to do but not yet pulled the trigger on. Instead we limped in with an aero garden right behind the kitchen sink.

So where ever you find “farmbot people” you will likely find a receptive ear.

See below for how “efficient”could use some clarification with regards to what type of efficiency you mean.

mooreed··on Show HN: A bookmarking tool designed to help synthesize your web research
Looks slick.

What do the numeric figures mean at the top of a topic card?

Things like 1b, 7b, 2.1bt and 11% and 17%

Is there somewhere that explains those? Did I miss some internet wide naming convention ??? :)

mooreed··on I made a robot to cut my hair with scissors [video]
This made my day. Great video. incredible project, and funny too.

Spoiler - he gets a robotically perfect mullet because the scissors can reach the lower neck line.

mooreed··on Bail – Get out of your plans, guilt free
Is my action of “bailing” transparent to the other party? Via (re)prompting my friend with a notification or something where they might be able to guess I was trying to get out?
mooreed··on Google tracks individual users per Chrome installation ID
It seems like a reasonable time to bring up the reformer project 'ungoogled-chrome' [1]. I have used it and new versions of Firefox for over 3 years and have seldom had to jump back to `Googlified Chrome.` Do know that installing via `brew` [2] means no - standard browser auto-update. Which in this case, makes sense to me.

Aside: It seems to me the realist punk / anti-the-man software one can work on is a user respecting browser. I don't work on these, but I am very grateful for those out there who do.
