moonka··on Our Bookless Future
I like my kindle for so many reasons, especially the screen which doesn't strain my eyes. But this is by far the biggest benefit over reading on my phone or a tablet.
moonka··on What WeWork is giving laid-off employees who aren’t named Adam Neumann
The article states:

>Under New York State WARN act labor regulations, employees are promised 90 days of paid notice or leave if they are laid off en masse.

moonka··on What WeWork is giving laid-off employees who aren’t named Adam Neumann
Laying off employees and expecting them to sign non-competes for a month of severance (since they are required by WARN to provide 3 of the 4 months) feels very miserly and in bad faith. Why the non-compete?
moonka··on GitHub tries to quell employee anger over its ICE contract
If part of the reason that employees at companies like Github get equity is to foster a sense of ownership, it's no surprise that employees concern themselves with the larger picture.
moonka··on Joi Ito Resigns from M.I.T. Media Lab After Outcry over Jeffrey Epstein Ties
>Mr. Ito has been a board member of The New York Times Company since 2012. The company did not immediately comment on Mr. Ito’s decision to leave M.I.T.

This is the 7th paragraph in the story. Shouldn't it be higher up?

moonka··on Americans Shocked to Find Their Rights Literally Vanish at U.S. Airports
I fear that within another 10 years it won't just be airports. I wouldn't be surprised to see this type of "security" at train/bus stations, stadiums, movie theaters, churches, etc.
moonka··on It is a myth that a large share of people can’t cover a $400 emergency expense
Not to mention the fact that a $400 dollar emergency is on the low end. In my experience, most emergencies that have cropped up have been closer to the $700-800 price (Doctor bills (after negotiation), vet bills, temporary relocation, etc).
moonka··on Map of Proposed US Time Zone Changes
Interesting that so much of the country seems dissatisfied with their current time zone. Being in WA, I'm certainly hoping that it moves forward for us.
moonka··on High-Deductible Health Policies Linked to Delayed Diagnosis and Treatment
Plus your family and friends who may not be as well off as you ALSO get health care. That's valuable.
moonka··on People Lose Their Employer-Sponsored Insurance Constantly
It's painful. After going through something similar (with UMB and ConnectYourCare/UMB), I ended up over at Lively. No fees, and you can invest with TD Ameritrade for free. I hear Fidelity is a good option as well.
moonka··on Facebook 'mistakenly deleted' years of Mark Zuckerberg's old Facebook posts
I will check it out. Looks awesome. Thanks for sharing!
moonka··on Facebook 'mistakenly deleted' years of Mark Zuckerberg's old Facebook posts
When I was going through and manually removing my old posts, I couldn't delete any older than a number of years, and just got an error. I'd prefer the other bug.
moonka··on Launch HN: Bottomless (YC W19) – Coffee Restocked with a Smart Scale
Yea, that's absolutely trippy. Still worth it though. I just started working near that one, I have to stop by.
moonka··on Ask HN: Anyone else have long-standing GMail filters that have stopped working?
I've noticed the same on Spam filtering as well. It used to be instant but now more and more I see things show up for a few minutes before disappearing. I also just recently set up a new gmail account that required some filtering to a sizeable inbox and it was very painful because of the delays.
moonka··on Launch HN: Bottomless (YC W19) – Coffee Restocked with a Smart Scale
I rolled my eyes reading the synapsis, because I am picky with which coffee I order, and prefer to grab bags of local roasters. Then I looked at the roasters you offer and was impressed. I'll be putting in an order once I finish the bag in my cupboard I just picked up. If only you had Slate* it would be perfect for me because you'd have 4 out of the 4 I prefer instead of just 3 out of 4.

moonka··on Launch HN: Keeper Tax (YC W19) – Find tax writeoffs in bank statements
This is awesome. Does you guys look at credit card statements? We've moved all the business expenses to a separate credit card to make sure we don't miss anything. How about Paypal?
moonka··on Ask HN: Tools or sites you use to scope out a workplace before taking a job?
Key Values is a very cool idea! Have you thought about adding a location filter?
moonka··on How transportation can transform a city – Seattle's double decker tunnel
This morning was a bike ride that did the same. It was completely awesome. 12,000 bikes tearing through it. One of the best organized rides I've done.
moonka··on Detroit Bar Serves Michigan's First Cannabis-Derived Cocktail
I've noticed CBD soda for sale at some of the local beer places. It'll be interesting to see how CBD sales grow over the next few years. Hopefully we'll start to see some studies on the effectiveness on CBD for the myriad of aliments I hear it helps for.
moonka··on Munchery Shuts Down
>Is that what you are seeing on your end? A pivot to a Blue Apron like meal kit? For me it seems to be a prepped food delivery service still.

Interesting, for me it's showing "The Plaid Box", a weekly subscription box.

moonka··on Munchery Shuts Down
It looks like maybe they are pivoting to a blue apron style boxed meal delivery? Before they would deliver premade food (like restaurant delivery). You could order from a different menu each day as you wanted it. I used it a few times in the beginning. Slowly portions became smaller and more expensive, and the menu became very repetitive so I stopped using them in favor of restaurant delivery. I actually didn't realize they stopped doing business in Seattle last May until I saw this announcement and started looking around.
moonka··on Best American History Reads of 2018
FYI, they aren't books.

>articles, essays, videos, podcasts, conversations, maps, and visualizations.

moonka··on Auto Dealers, Startups Try Amazon-Style Ordering for Cars
Not wanted to deal with a dealership is the biggest reason I haven't bought a new car in a long time. Last time was such an awful experience.
moonka··on Hospital prices are about to go public in the U.S.
Exactly. As it is, everytime we end up with a sizable bill I call and ask for a discount, and right away they tend to give a 10% pay in full discount. I've seen this through different providers and insurance plans. I would have never thought about it until someone suggested it to me.
moonka··on Chipotle’s Mandatory Arbitration Agreements Are Backfiring
Not sure, but it seems like Uber is also not paying arbitration fees. https://gizmodo.com/ubers-arbitration-policy-comes-back-to-b...
moonka··on Changes to U.S. federal authorities relating to production and marketing of hemp
Hopefully we'll see some studies about the effectiveness about CBD come soon. I've heard a lot of anecdotes about it's usefulness for things such anxiety and minor inflammation, it would be good to learn more.
moonka··on Plastic Water Bottles, Which Enabled a Drinks Boom, Now Threaten Industry
The most interesting thing to me is that after 4 years it's not fixed. So I'm not sure that all the press is doing much good.
moonka··on Plastic Water Bottles, Which Enabled a Drinks Boom, Now Threaten Industry
*Offer not valid in Flint, MI.
moonka··on Global, U.S. Growth in Smartphone Growth Starts to Decline
Since I got my first HTC EVO, I've eagerly upgraded phones every two years, and frequently every one. Now I'm 2 years into my pixel one, and don't see a phone worth upgrading too. Between rising prices and the way it feels each recent phone has removed features I'm in no rush.
moonka··on Wooden bikes
I went from 23mm tires to 32mm, and my first ride I felt like I was floating on clouds. Feels so smooth in comparison.
