monopoliessuck··on List animals until failure
I added Jellyfish and then Portuguese Man-o-war.

It took the man o war, but crossed out Jellyfish and said "added a vaguer term", but a jellyfish and a man-o-war are discrete animals.

The man-o-war is a colonial siphonophore composed of zooids, while a jellyfish is a singular marine organism.

They're both in the phylum Cnidaria, and that would have been a more vague term had I entered it.

This looks neat, but has a lot going on.

I really like how minimalist yet extensible lf [0] is and just use edir [1] to rename files in bulk. Gluing them both together is really easy too.

monopoliessuck··on Intermittent fasting more effective than calorie restriction
The body doesn't store protein in any real capacity. Fat is stored in adipose tissue and carbs in glycogen, but protein must be available in the bloodstream when needed for muscle maintenance and synthesis.

Even if you up your dietary protein during the feeding window, if you're fasting for lengthy periods of time where the protein has already been utilized for fuel, then the muscles are starved and catabolic. There's no passive protein depot built into our physiology muscles can pull from.

Redundant? Smart watches exist and camera (phones) exist. They're both worse off today in the repair department _by design_, not coincidence or necessity. I still have both (non smart versions) I use specifically because of their repairability.

Planned obsolescence is baked into the marketing strategy. Fairphone realizes this but capitulated to sell peripherals, toeing Apple's talking points.

Companies taking a principled stance on repair is how repairs actually get done not the random customer finding an out-of-band way to increase the longevity of their hardware by trawling iFix it.

You need the phone upside down in your pocket to plug it in and a new USB headset to boot. The Apple and Samsungs of the world in their ubiquity have changed the ecosystem.

It's not surprising that if you make using my old headset difficult, I and millions of others will move to buying a wireless alternative — they're counting on it. That's what happened and the sales numbers mirror that. People throw away way more audio equipment today than they ever have.

The fact that these Sony earbuds happen to be replaceable is quite a bit different than them being _designed_ as user-replicable. You found a community member that uploaded a video showing you how to do it, now show me the manufacturer's documentation explaining how it's done.

This exists for watches and cameras, but we have been lulled into throwing battery operated things away as a cultural migration pattern and Fairphone is aware and complicit in this indirectly and unnecessarily.

I get it, you either work for or just really dig Fairphone. Glad you found a company you like so much.

An always plugged in port risks damage and a damaged USB port makes your phone a brick, not so for an analog port that is inarguably more resilient.

Every major vendor's earbuds and most of their headsets aren't battery-replacable. This complexity moves outside the phone and onto the user when all of this was handled reliably by "lesser" hardware of yore. None of this makes Bluetooth headsets an impossibility.

SD Card upsells are so obviously upsells, come on. Yes using shoddy peripherals can lead to a bad experience and they're replaceable for a reason. You seem to be going out of your way to bias the corporate position. Using low quality batteries risks far more, should Fairphone epoxy their batteries in to save the customer from that too?

Killing of the aux port was an Apple signature move. Whether or not the case looks like Samsung is not the true legacy of this courageous stance.

This just seems very evasive.

Great, so your security situatuon is now determined by two contributors that haven't moved on back-porting userspace lineageos to your device.

I very much doubt anyone is making kernel or vendor updates to upstream neglected components.

Apple's omission was the same garbage about complexity and space, yet no one in the real world had these problems. Apple is making a killing on Bluetooth accessories and adapters which have a much much higher markup than phones. Do you buy that SD cards or removable batteries were "too complicated" and bloaty for the end-user too?

If you're trying to differente yourself from Apple, it seems like a no brainer to include a jack especially since USB ports are needed for charging, battery case accessories, data transfer etc. all of which can't be done while listening to music.

On top of that, a "wobbly" USB port is like the top issue with phones outside of a cracked screen and an analog port is way more resilient to always being plugged in while in your pocket than any USB adapter ever will be.

My wired headset is going to outlive whatever bluetooth sealed-in battery garbage "works today until it doesn't" too so "environmentally friendly" needs an asterisk.

This is Fairphone playing copy apple. You can like Fairphone and their mission, but giving them a pass here is just playing into marketing bs.

This isn't necessarily true.

Regulations that create exceptions for key big players entrench them further and their poor business practices against competitors that wish to usurp their market dominance. New entrants have to play by the rules, but established ones get preferential treatment.

Same. I didn't miss an email confirmation or anything. They're very aware of me in the "queue". Contacting support on a monthly basis gets the same answer. I have to wait for some arbitrary deadline on "current pre-orders" and they are unsure about when that'll happen, but are definitely sure it WILL happen... eventually.

monopoliessuck··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
I'm unsure by your wording, but I am a vegetarian in case that's what you mean by "either" - over a decade and still ongoing. Not very important, but I just wanted to clarify.

Your breakfast sounds tasty. I don't blame you for having it often. :+1:

monopoliessuck··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
It really depends on what you want to maximize in your life, health and environment. Not everyone will agree, but here are some things to chew on.

* Animal products require an inordinate amount of water to produce compared to plant-based products.

* Animal breeding and grazing at scale creates a bunch of environmental issues.

  - Methane production

  - Dust bowl effect due to over-grazing

  - Manure runoff and associated effects

  - Crazy abuse and proliferation of antibiotics and the resulting antibiotic resistant bacteria
* Ocean dredging for seafood is horribly destructive to marine environments.

* Fish, due to other human-origin environmental issues, are loaded with methyl-mercury and arsenic. This trend is only getting worse.

* Animals have brains and the associated emotion, pain and fear responses to trauma.

* Outside of chickens, most animals we like to eat are higher order mammals that are arguably more susceptible to the kinds of pain and distress we feel ourselves.

* Animal rights standards for slaughterhouses, especially in the US, are abysmal.

* Food and food handling standards for meat, especially in the US, are abysmal.

* Meat production creates a lot of secondary waste products that wouldn't be market competitive if they weren't subsidized by super-high meat production. Used as fillers in all kinds of things from pet food to cosmetics.

  - eg. Animal tallow, gelatin, organ meat, animal bone-meal

  - some of these are inherently useful, but as meat consumption rises to meet demand, so do these byproducts' supply and they show up all over as they now compete with vegetable based options.
* Risks of parasites, improper cooking, spoilage, etc.

* Nutritional benefits exist, but there are nutritional issues with red meat, organ meat and associated fats as well.

* A lot of food "certifications" are industry-managed and opaque to consumers, pushing a lot of negative externalities under the rug and making these things worse, not better.

  - "Grass-fed" is a "best-effort" thing and most companies that claim this are still only seasonally feeding their animals grass while also supplementing with diets molasses.

  - Free-range, prairie raised, farm-fresh, cage-free... What this means depends largely on who you ask.

  - etc. etc.
There are more bullets I'm sure too, I'll stop listing though. Hope this helps.

Just given the above, animal foods aren't required for adequate human sustenance and yet there are a lot of issues with them.

There are of course nutritional benefits to consuming meat and negative externalities from modern agricultural practices, but I think animal production has high costs for its benefits.

It doesn't have to be an all or nothing either. Everyone reducing their meat consumption by a little has an outsized impact compared to some zealots doing so. No one benefits if we treat this as some kind of morality food fight or religious crusade.

monopoliessuck··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
As a vegetarian for well over a decade, I've always said the same thing. Meat isn't nearly as egregiously unhealthy as it's panned if at all. Processed foods, excessive simple carbohydrates and sugars are the main evils in the kitchen, but there are a variety of reasons to eat less meat too.

There's nuance in all of this. People sympathetic to American consumption patterns will probably see science and explanations like this as some kind of endorsement of their diet. Nutritional science is still in its infancy and we'll be waffling on the specifics for decades to come, especially if food companies have a vested interest in funding studies.

Another data point. Just eat minimally processed whole foods as often as possible, diversify your plate and moderate your intake. I think people are too hyper focused on the "super" and "evil" quality of foods and we end up stuck in the margins bike-shedding the minutia.

monopoliessuck··on Swinging back to open standards
I missed "back" when I grepped the new policies for "crowdfund", Purism changed the verbiage, my apologies. This was their earlier policy I believe, before the one I put up from 2020. There was some waffling as far as I can remember.

In any case, I guess I'll send another email because I think you're right, I should already have gotten a refund. Maybe Purism will agree with us time around. Saying my experience is anomalous doesn't really square with community sentiment. My situation isn't some crazy one-off and I think today Purism is more well known for their shady customer service practices than their open hardware and software. Hang around any of the forums and you'll see more disillusioned Purism fans than happy customers. I certainly didn't pre-order a Linux phone so I could be stuck in customer service limbo five years later divorced from both cash and computer.

Hell, I'd even take a phone if I could get one before they push back deliveries another year or two but I think that may push me into a different queue.

monopoliessuck··on Swinging back to open standards
So you're telling me that if Purism continues to receive new pre-orders that outstrip their manufacturing capacity, they will indefinitely hold the money they've collected from me thus far since new customers' pre-orders take precedence over my refund? My refund, initiated because of their inability to meet demand in the first place, is now perilously delayed because of their inability to meet demand while they service new customers?

If so, this contradicts what I've been told in emails by Purism staff, the fact that people after me in the queue have received refunds and the fact that this policy in question no longer even exists on their website. It's all super transparent, fair and customer friendly.

monopoliessuck··on Swinging back to open standards
The funny thing is no one seems to know how refunds are handled, even within the organization. Talking to customer service is like talking to a guy that bought a Purism shirt and kind of knows the guys that handle the "queue" somewhere out there in the nether. Everyone I speak to at the company has no idea when I'll get it, but they're certain I will... eventually. Apparently I'm on the fast track too and have been for years, which is swell. The irony of all this is I selected the latest Evergreen batch when I funded because I didn't mind waiting. When Purism flirted with the idea of a new model after Evergreen I even inquired about moving my funds there so I'd get peak Librem - I really didn't mind waiting.

When deadlines got missed the third or fourth time I got worried. Then Purism started releasing a few phones to influencers and internal people only and claimed "shipping" I got more worried. I think the only "real" shipping batch was Evergreen ultimately anyway, but when some a few normal customers began explaining they got phones and they were overheating I got more worried. More time passed and the prices started rising to insane levels, transparency had fallen away completely and I still hadn't received my phone I just decided to cut bait. I asked for a refund and was told I would have to wait so wait I did.

> the crowdfunder preorders were never supposed to be refundable

Purism's crowdfunding wasn't traditional crowdfunding. The company exists with other, supposedly profitable, lines. The crowdfunders were supposed to get their devices before Purism started promising Librem USA to new customers. If you have a backlog, you clear the backlog before accepting, promising and shipping new devices to new customers. You don't just sit on the money and hand out IOUs.

Here[0] is the policy in 2020 regarding the crowdfunding campaign refunds.

> If you want to cancel an order for products that are in the process of crowdfunding or pre-order, we will issue a full refund once the crowdfunding/pre-order of the product is completed and all pre-orders are shipped.

This is now missing from Purism's policies. That's after I was told I would have to wait for my line in the queue. You're telling me the backlog up to 2019 is clear so I assume all "pre-orders" are shipped and I'm still handed promises. Since the queue is something mythical and no one, even Purism themselves, can tell me where I am in it, I'm left holding the bag. This is not how you run an "ethical company".

tldr; It's almost 2023 and I do not have either the phone I ordered in 2017 or the refund I filed for years later after a litany of missed deadlines, promises and communications failures.

monopoliessuck··on Swinging back to open standards
Hey I remember that crowdfunding campaign! If the shipping queue is at 2019, why is my refund for an order from 2017 not processed?

First you guys said it was because I had to wait until my batch was going to ship. I waited. Now no who knows and no one will talk to me beyond saying "maybe soon?" and throwing their arms up. I'm a FOSS advocate and loved the idea of the Librem and even the idea of paying more for an ethical device, but this all leaves a very bad taste in my mouth and I'm not alone.

Any info would be appreciated. The email volleyball doesn't ever yield any new information month to month to month...

monopoliessuck··on Swinging back to open standards
I ordered in October 2017. I gave up a few years ago and tried to get a a refund. I'm in the "queue" for one, but it's just been years and years of being screwed around with "reasons". I send an email every month or two asking about it to no avail. I'm apparently marked "priority", whatever the hell that means.

I've lost all faith in purism as a company.

I think mandated information disclosure is extremely important in a capitalist system. How can we make good decisions if we don't have good information? We need to ask more questions, trust, but verify. We do pass laws that require those that sell products and services to disclose X, Y and Z for their products in a standardized and uniform manner. Likewise, we should be skeptical and critical about what others are telling us.

Information that's not tied to such a simple tit for tat relationship gets in the weeds though. How do you define "misinformation" as it pertains to your mother on someone's feed? You can claim and sue for damages and if a judge and jury find your case, then that's what it is, but mandating strict systematic moderation of all internet users on social media is not the same as mandating information disclosure for the Kellogs or IKEAs of the world. We've decided that Horseradish dyed green can be sold as Wasabi on the ingredients list. This is officially supported misinformation right?

In this instance, election denial is almost complete idiocy, yes, but barring "election denial" wholesale is a terrible thing to do. Your questions are quite leading too. We need more discussion around these topics, not less. I've talked election deniers off their stupid cliffs before. When SCOTUS shot down the Bush v. Gore recount decades ago, Americans had reason to be upset and talk about it. Would it have been more unifying if everyone had just bowed their heads, quickly and quietly, accepting the results without fuss, sure...

Censorship is a great tool for quelling public dissent. It's a shortcut around reason though and we've built up these tribal walls that preclude solving problems together. If quieting dissenters is the thing you want to maximize, you'll do great with it. We're not the only ones chomping at the bit to censor those that disagree with us, but I guess be careful what you wish for.

monopoliessuck··on Kanye West is buying Parler
> the idea that the only correct stance is yours and all moral, rational people will converge on it is ridiculous.

I never said that. Conversations exist to be had, good ideas should be promoted and bad ideas disproven and cast aside. Ideas should be considered and judged on their merits, even ones I don't agree with. There's certainly no requirement for any individual to engage.

Despite calling me out, there's irony inherent here in that you believe your stance is the only one that deserves to even be considered. Censoring those that do not believe as you do is the definition of believing you have the "only correct stance".

People do and should have the option to curtail speech in their spaces as they see fit. I choose to converse on platforms that limit my and other's speech minimally. That's not an endorsement of "nationalist or genocidal movements".

> Moderation of wide-reach public forums with the goal of preventing movements causing mass death and misery...

Claimed goals are always rosy until they aren't. Individuals habituated to not having to determine truth for themselves are ultimately doing themselves a disservice. That said, if people prefer platforms that censor certain content, then those platforms will thrive; that's fine and they have. I don't think though that information freedom is on most people's radars when they choose a social media platform. A lot of this legislation that requires mandated strict moderation will only work to entrench big players that can pay to do so.

I'm not a racist genocidal nationalist and I don't follow nor broadcast their content. I still don't want their existence in the public sphere to limit my expression. They're not that important and we shouldn't make them out to be.

monopoliessuck··on Kanye West is buying Parler
There's a really concerning trend on HN and elsewhere I'm seeing. Everyone now seems to think free speech is too dangerous to try and promote anymore. It's been a shift over a couple years.

I'm not supporting Ye or any of his bullshit, but some of the comments on here are really chillingly authoritarian.

Parler isn't going to be able to maintain "free speech" even if they or Kanye want it to, which I seriously doubt anyway. They don't "have it now" and they won't have it tomorrow either. Still, it's strange how HN flips so violently against free speech when the content is obviously offensive and low quality.

People need to be better stewards of their own beliefs, not simply shielded from malicious, dim or unsavory ones out there in public.

As an aside, I can't believe celebrities have the sway they do. Today's breed talks like such imbeciles; I have no idea how they keep people's interest.
