Ok buddy... not worth arguing anymore. Walk a mile in another persons shoes before you cast stones.

So what you are saying is, the police officer should start following that provocateur around on his day off with a camera? Film the guy who is filming the police officers! I like it!
monkmartinez··on Multiple Beverly Hills PD officers now weaponizing copyright against streaming
Journalists and provocateur's have nothing in common. Journalists, in my experience, are very easy to work with. They understand and appreciate the stress of the situations first responders deal with 24/7 and are keen to keep their jobs generally. That is, filming and then posting someone bleeding out to Instagram is a quick way to get sued. Journalists, in my experience have a common sense of decency that provocateur's lack. There is a massive gap between professionals working a scene and bystanders provoking first responders to get likes.

I totally agree with you. There are lots of people that do this to EMS as well. Fortunately, I have HIPPA to get these people away from scenes. Unfortunately, there are a ton of people that have nothing better to do than film/jibe/harangue police and fire/EMS in the course of their duties. We know a lot of them on a first name basis including bday, medical history and how many times we have given them narcan... as we often find them with needles in their arms overdosed.

I have a QNAP for my whole family (Mom, Dad, Bro, Sis)... they can remote in and save pictures.

I then use cloudsync to backup to GCP nearline. All family pictures are there. Obviously, we don't store stuff that we don't want our mother to see. I take the risk of hacking, but a fire in my house is probably more likely than a hacking of my family photos on GCP. I figure just about everything else is ephemeral.

Cyberdecks are super cool and this reminds me of them... at least as far as form factor is concerned. I agree with some posters here that this thing is DOA. One can build a really cool cyberdeck with a ton more functionality for a fraction of the price. There are hundreds of examples on /r/cyberDeck
monkmartinez··on Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, Part II
Ok, I still have questions.

To start... How would a city with tens of thousands of computers transition to ARM in the near future?

The apps that run 911 Dispatch systems and run critical infrastructure all over the world are all on x86 hardware. Millions if not Billions of dollars in investment, training, and configuration. These are bespoke systems. The military industrial complex basically custom chips and x86. The federal government runs on x86. you think they are just going to say, "Whelp, looks like Apple won, lets quadruple the cost to integrate Apple silicon for our water system and missile systems! They own the stack!"

Professional grade engineering apps and manufacturing apps are just going to suddenly rewrite for apple hardware, because M2 or M3 is sooooo fast? Price matters!!!! Choice Matters!!!

This is solely about consumer choice right now. The cost is prohibitive for most consumers as well, as evidence by the low market penetration of Apple computers to this day.

monkmartinez··on Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, Part II
That is fine and I get it. Just realize there are lots of people that need/want more power, variety, compatibility with a lower cost. Water cooling is plug and play these days for desktop rigs. The gaming laptop market has become shockingly good for professional level CAD/Engineering apps with the industry focused on drastically reducing noise levels (albeit still quite loud in comparison to fanless). Trade offs... trade offs as far as you can see...
monkmartinez··on Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, Part II
Are you saying you don't see much promise for AMD, Intel and Nvidia in the GPU space or with computers in general? I had a hard time following your logic.

Apple may own their stack, but there are a TON of use cases where that stack doesn't even form a blip on the radar of the people who purchase computer gear.

monkmartinez··on Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, Part II
Who cares if you have the darn thing plugged in anyway? Does the M1 outperform the Threadripper 3990x?
monkmartinez··on Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, Part II
I cannot speak for OP, but software is the reason for me. I can not run Solidworks on MacOS without bootcamp or other tricks, for example. Photogrammetry apps? GIS apps? CNC CAM apps? I mean, compare the Mac[1] compatible apps to the catalog of Apps Autodesk has.

The fact of the matter is GPU support on MacOS is just not there in the same way it is with windows. It is really hard to justify the price of Apple when you compare directly to Windows offerings spec for spec. When you compare the sheer volume of software available for Windows as compared to MacOS, especially if you need a discrete GPU there are really no comparisons.

The ABC's are helpful for just about any emergent medical situation. From first responders to paramedics, we are hammered to remember and implement the ABC's. You can do a lot with very basic knowledge.

Correcting problems with the systems associated with the ABC's is more knowledge and experienced based. A good basic first aid and CPR class will get you a lot of that knowledge. From there, staying calm and calling 911 is vital if you are US based.

monkmartinez··on Intel outsources Core i3 to TSMC's 5nm process
I was a super MBP user until a few years ago when I got into 3D printing. I started doing lots of CAD stuff and found Windows users... Lots of them. Then I got into CNC at a hobby level and I find most of that tribe is heavily invested into Windows. Looking at the non-hobby level of CAD users, that is, professional engineers who use CAD... I see lots of Windows users.

That is not to say Intel isn't in trouble, but I have exactly zero interest in running MacOS anytime soon. I don't care if the M1 MBP has 15 day battery life. I need a discrete GPU and loads of RAM and I want it in a Laptop, understanding that I need to plug it in after 1 hour. There are dozens of us!

Agreed... a few years ago, I was getting a bit plump in the mid-section. My wife's grandmother from Colombia strait up told me I was looking "gordo" (fat). I got on it immediately and shed the spare tire. I thanked her for being honest and open... I wish I could tell others the same.

I have had both and I prefer Android, but I am using an iPhone 11 right now. I would switch back to Android in heartbeat if there was a way for me to seamlessly message my children on their iPads similar to iOS. I use about 10 apps on my phone and they are all available on iOS and Android. Once my kids are old enough to be thoughtful users of a cell phone, I will switch back to Android.

I work for a large metro fire department/EMS. We have had lots (<30) of people under 50 get it. Nobody has been hospitalized and most report that it was a sucky flu. We had a retiree who was overweight, with diabetes get it at the ER where he worked as a Paramedic... he had a significantly different experience being placed on a vent and coding several times. He is still kicking however!

Long and short; You can only control what you can control... which is to say not much. Take precaution, but fear is occupying space in your mind rent free. I don't know about you, but I charge for space there.

I don't know why you are being downvoted! I agree with you... just because you are a professional athlete doesn't automatically place you in the "healthy" category. Its not just performance enhancing drugs either. These guys and gals beat the living crud out of their bodies and have to maintain body weight and strength that may not benefit their health. It is complex, but I don't for one second correlate healthy to professional athletes there are just too many cases that point toward, "its complicated and actually points toward, it is dangerous for your health to be a professional athlete."

This is certainly cool and I love my Craftbot 3d printer. However, one has to mention the problems with using 3d printed devices like this. This is not to tear apart the project, but I would hope valid criticism. Medical gear like this is commodity stuff that is actually very inexpensive. I do think 3D printing will democratize the really expensive medical equipment, but we are not there yet.

#1 cleanability - It is very hard to properly clean a 3d printed item and each print may be a little different than the others.

#2 Cost - For the same cost, I can buy a stethoscope on Aliexpress that is made from aluminum and pvc. For about $5 I can purchase an actual Littmann replica made from the same durable parts as the previously mentioned steth from Aliexpress. The same goes for all of the designed products they have.

#3 Durability - PETG and ABS are relatively durable, but they do not compare to aluminum in terms of strength. In emergent situations, I would not trust plastic for my gear. In the clinical setting, I can see the use case, but still like the term "buy once, cry once" when it comes to tools that will see lots of use.

monkmartinez··on Precious Plastic Version 4 [video]
Thank you!!! I appreciate the effort here and have followed Dave on Youtube for long time.... but have spent very little time on the precious plastics webpage. So if my questions are better answered there, please feel free to point me in the right direction.

I am super interested in starting a small space... as in my garage. I have a place on the side of my yard where I could store close to 10 pallet sized "containers" where I could store various plastics.

Admittedly, I have been hesitant to purchase the required machinery to process the plastic for selfish reasons. However, my wife and I have discussed the need to do something completely altruistic to show our children and I think this would satisfy more than a few "conditions" that would enable an investment in said machinery.

That all said, how would you go about collecting plastic? I live in a suburban city that has a recycling program. Should I ask businesses? Do I need to cold call to get steady supplies? Picking stuff off the side of roads and whatnot seems good for a while, but how would I make dent if I cannot secure a reliable source?

>Let me put it this way: the big-pharma drug manufacturing (and more generally, medical-equipment manufacturing) pipeline is set up such that the only thing about a drug that should be able to kill someone, is if the drug's active ingredient itself has a bad interaction with their body.

"Should be" is a giant risk factor... "Don't worry Mrs. Jones, this drug shouldn't be able to kill you unless you have a terrible allergic reaction!"

Big-pharma has shown, repeatedly, that their sole motivation is not altruistic treatments of human aliments... it is that of any other corporate entity. Profit. I don't think that is inherently evil either.

Medical cannabis could kill you... you are right, but I would argue that you are much more likely to be killed from alcohol or tobacco related events.

For just one data point: I've worked in EMS for 14 years and I have never seen a cause of death that was directly the result of using cannabis. Unfortunately, I have lost track of how many people I have seen die that were the direct result of alcohol ingestion. Same for Oxycotin and other opioid based "medicine" prior to everyone and their brothers walking around with narcan.

monkmartinez··on How I automate my home
My home automation is setup similar but more as a barter system.

"Would you like an hour of screen time? ... The dog excrement is rather unsightly and requires collection. Post collection, we run a mile together."

"I will give you 15 minutes of screen time for every 5 burpees completed to my satisfaction"

"The $10 dollar bonus this week will be based on the lack of dog excrement in the yard and you packing your own !!Heathy!! lunches!"

"I will give you $10 dollars for every book read with accompanying book report (usually only two paragraph summaries)."

"If we find any clothes that are not in hampers, we deduct $1 dollar from allowance per item."

So on and so forth... the rules are consistent, but do allow for bonuses and cutbacks based on performance. The conservation of electricity and water are biggies!!!
