momothereal··on Coinbase debuts on Nasdaq at 100B $ valuation
Title has since changed to "Coinbase drops below debut price after hitting public market at $100 billion valuation"

Edit: now it's over 100B again

momothereal··on Gitlet.js – Git implemented in 1k lines of JavaScript (2015)
In the 'real' Git, one of the functions I use frequently is `git checkout -- .`, which discards any unstaged changes. Looking at Gitlet's implementation, it wouldn't handle that well as `checkout` can only take a ref.

So I guess I'm wondering what the real `git checkout -- .` actually does behind the scenes?

momothereal··on GnuCOBOL – a free/libre COBOL compiler
Large organizations you speak of that use COBOL are mostly insurance and finance megacorps, and some government, that were (and some still are) deep in the pockets of various mainframe vendors. Vendors distributed their own compilers with some tweaks to the language, like IBM.

It's extremely rare to see FOSS in such legacy systems. The push for FOSS in large corporations has been coming from the for newer stacks, designed by newer developers.

momothereal··on IBM COBOL for Linux on x86
The post just went up, people are still writing their insightful essays on their experience with COBOL, what this means for the future of the language, and speculating as for the reason IBM is porting their compiler to Linux. Can't wait!
momothereal··on Unsplash is being acquired by Getty Images
The WhatsApp acquisition comes to mind:

1. Promise to not hoard and sell user data: https://blog.whatsapp.com/why-we-don-t-sell-ads

2. Get acquired by arguably the largest ad network and data hoarding giant

3. Proceed to flow user data to FB, forcing it down the throat of all their users

momothereal··on Kinto: Mac-style shortcut keys for Linux and Windows
On macOS, Ctrl+a (^a) goes to the beginning of the line, Ctrl-e (^e) goes to the end. On Windows you can do [Home] and [End] respectively iirc.

I think "readline-style controls" refers to a more letter-based approach, instead of special keys? i.e. ^a, ^e, ^w...

momothereal··on Switzerland votes against electronic ID system provided by private companies
What happens when a council member leaves office unexpectedly, i.e. dies or resigns? Does it kick an election for everyone or just that one seat?
momothereal··on Alamo Drafthouse Files for Bankruptcy
In Canada, there are 2 functional equivalents. A Division I Proposal [1] is a means for individuals and businesses to resolve "unmanageable debt", with no minimum amount. For large corporations with >$5Mil in debt, the CCAA federal law is more advantageous [2].

momothereal··on Icons – Google Fonts
Not a fan of how the entire page is squished when clicking on an icon. All the icons get displaced and it's a pain to find where you were in the list...
momothereal··on Icons – Google Fonts
When you click on an icon you can choose to download it as SVG or PNG.
momothereal··on Passion Not Required: It's OK to Only Program for a Paycheck
I think it depends on how the interview goes? If the candidate is "passionate" about watering their solo house plant, maybe not as much.

On the other hand, I can't imagine someone with tons of OSS contributions who _isn't_ passionate about programming at some level.

momothereal··on Passion Not Required: It's OK to Only Program for a Paycheck
You're missing the point entirely: it's better to hire someone who shows some creativity, can follow through with their goals, and can bring new perspectives on top of their work-related experience, instead of a robot with the same exact work-related experience. Being passionate about something is a good indicator for these qualities.
momothereal··on The Mars Helicopter Is Online and Getting Ready to Fly
According to https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/how-nasas-mars-helicopter-will... (July 2020), it'll launch 60-70 sols after landing, so roughly mid-April.
momothereal··on Actually Portable Executables
I wonder if there's a compatibility/sanity test suite for Lua? It would be nice to run this interpreter with real scripts to see how it compares.
momothereal··on Actually Portable Executables
That's right, it only supports x86. However the binary will detect other architectures and try to run itself with QEMU in that case.
momothereal··on Functorio
It could take inspiration from some speedruns formats where the "seed" is pre-selected. That way you could have multiple people compete to write the most efficient factory in terms of resources and space to generate as many rockets as possible, and everyone with the same resource limitations and map layout!
momothereal··on OWASP Cheat Sheet Series
I just went through the Capital One SSRF and it's super smooth. Well done!
momothereal··on Rust 1.50
IMO it depends if you're already in a chaining context. I wouldn't use it in a simple if-else branch, but it also removes the need to use if-else when you're already in a 10-function long chain.

Before:

if a.b().c().d().e().f() { Some(g().h().i()) } else { None }

Now:

a().b().c().d().e().f().then(|| g().h().i())

Even better if you have multiple boolean returns in the chain.

momothereal··on Launch HN: Wasp (YC W21) – DSL for building full-stack web apps
Looks cool!

Do you have any examples or have experience with larger projects? For example, my React app has dozens of pages and some complex routing, and the backend has 50+ endpoints and talks to different databases, RabbitMQ, etc.

When I see "shoe that fits all" solutions like this I'm honestly skeptical about the degree of freedom I get for more complex architecture needs. I've found frameworks like Next.js usually give you the freedom you need because it's basically pure JS.

Also, this seems like it has a good opportunity to automatically integrate e2e/integration testing.

momothereal··on The Great SameSite Confusion
I read through this piece and the web.dev one, and I'm still confused between SameSite=Lax and Strict. Two-part question:

If I want a cookie to be only sent in requests from a page on https://mywebsite.com to https://mywebsite.com/internal/..., but not from any other origins, should I use Lax or Strict?

If I use HttpOnly cookies and Access-Control-Allow-Credentials=false on https://mywebsite.com/internal/..., does that make SameSite irrelevant? Would there be a security risk even if SameSite=None? Is the only security risk related to <img>?

momothereal··on Asdf – An Extendable Version Manager
It's for switching versions of your local CLI tools quickly.

> asdf is a CLI tool that can manage multiple language runtime versions on a per-project basis. It is like gvm, nvm, rbenv & pyenv (and more) all in one! Simply install your language’s plugin!

For example:

    $ asdf global python 3.6.2
    $ python -V
    Python 3.6.2

    $ asdf local python 3.9.1
    $ python -V
    Python 3.9.1
"asdf local" stores the version to use for the current directory across shells, which is neat. "shell" is for the current session, and "global" is for the system.

The supported CLI tools is extendable via plugins: https://asdf-vm.com/#/plugins-all

Same thing here! Eventually the Lync-XMPP bridge was shutdown by IT, so we all switched to Mattermost which is similar to Slack.
momothereal··on Anthony Levandowski Pardoned
You don't have to be high-profile or the President's buddy to receive an executive pardon (you can realize this by going through the article's list). Anyone* can petition and receive a pardon.

*: state offenses are handled by governors or a state pardon board, not the President

momothereal··on Jeffrey Epsteins Little Black-Book Unredacted [pdf]
Not that I'm advocating for any of it, but I'm sure most of these (mostly high-profile) people have received enough shit outside of the Epstein debacle that they don't care what others think.

Until it starts affecting business, probably.

momothereal··on Signal is having technical difficulties
If you want more context/discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25662215

The background here is that WhatsApp previously stated that they would never share user data for profit, i.e., not selling ads [1]. Reading that blog post leaves a sour taste in HN's collective mouth, because not 2 years later they would get acquired by the ad giant Facebook and now mandate that users agree to share their data with FB. The wording made it seem like accounts that didn't agree with the new policies would get terminated on February 8th.

A few days later, WhatsApp posted [2] that their update was misinterpreted by users and media, and that the clarifications to their policies were to increase transparency. They also pushed the ultimatum for a few months.

momothereal··on Signal is having technical difficulties
WhatsApp updated/clarified their Privacy Policy, which states they share PII with Facebook (their parent company).
