moberley··on Starbase, LA
Will they have to rename the other Starbase Louisiana? https://starbasela.org/
moberley··on Microsoft to stop sending SMS codes for personal accounts
The FAQs on the page says there are "secure and reliable recovery options" when the device with the passkey is lost. I wish there was more explanation for that because trying to help people recover Microsoft accounts when they don't have the password is mostly when I have used the SMS codes.
moberley··on How did .agakhan, .ismaili and .imamat get their own TLDs?
Brother has a similar global website.

moberley··on North Yorkshire apostrophe fans demand road signs with nowt taken out
I think in this case it means not having an apostrophe. That is, nothing as opposed to something.

moberley··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
As a subsidiary of Geely it seems unlikely Polestar would be available, but perhaps one of the US-based EV startups like Rivian, Lucid or Fisker would be interested. I am not sure how that would work with the Apple brand though.
moberley··on Sourcehut network outage post-mortem
For me there a bit of a language barrier with the terminology. After reading the sentences about hg.sr.ht and community maintenance it seems that some notable meaning is being conveyed about what that means for the operation of the service but its one I'm not smart enough to understand.

I appreciate the service though so I hope the differences between maintained and operated doesn't mean anything in the long term.

moberley··on Diesel-Electric Pickup Retrofit Kit [video]
Edison Motors, a startup manufacturer of heavy vocational diesel-electric trucks (electric drivetrain with a diesel generator onboard for charging) and retrofit kits, has announced a plan for similar pickup truck retrofit kits.
moberley··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
After watching the Edison Motors company build a hybrid electric logging truck prototype on YouTube it made me quite disappointed there don't seem to be other classes of vehicle being made in a similar user repairable manner. Of course, passenger vehicles do have some additional regulated safety requirements compared to a heavy vocational truck but perhaps someone will try to figure it out.
moberley··on Turns out, Meta's Threads is good for breaking news
Twitter no longer shows current posts to anyone that isn't logged in.

moberley··on Inside The Chaos at OpenAI
This does seem plausible, but I then wonder how the thought analogy plays out considering Sutskever's subsequent statement of regret for trying out the reset button in this case.
moberley··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
I find it interesting that the attempted explanations, as unconvincing as they may be, are related to Altman specifically. Given that Brockman was the board chairperson it is surprising that there don't seem to be any attempts to explain that demotion. Perhaps its just not being reported to anyone outside but it makes no sense to me that anyone would assume a person would stay after being removed from a board without an opportunity to be at the meeting to defend their position.
moberley··on Satya Nadella says OpenAI governance needs to change
Microsoft already has several employees whose position is titled as "CEO" -- the heads of GitHub and LinkedIn at least -- other than head of the whole firm.
moberley··on From airlines to ticket sellers, companies fight U.S. to keep junk fees
Canada has a federal tax but in some provinces it is combined with the provincial sales tax and in other provinces there is a separate tax (or none in Alberta) so the USA is not the only federation with disparate tax regimes.
moberley··on Bayer hit with $332M judgement in Roundup cancer trial
Glyphosate is sometimes used a pre-harvest dessicant with cereal crops like wheat in which case the Roundup Ready gene is not required.
moberley··on SpaceX Starship Super Heavy Project at the Boca Chica Launch Site
The Spaceport Company is also trying to develop a system for providing near coastal ocean launch facilities that they call it Spaceport as a Service. Their team includes a person who helped to write the Part 450 regulations while at the FAA previously.

moberley··on HP fails to derail claims that it bricks scanners on printers when ink runs low
I generally like Brother printers but sometimes the software is less great.

I have a Brother DCP-L2550DW which is very good but for some reason the scan to PC function no longer works over the network. Printing still works as expected in all cases, but ControlCenter4 can't communicate via the network anymore. It works fine if I connect a USB cable so I just do that when I need to scan.

moberley··on Rimac unveils SineStack, battery energy storage system
Independent, except VW AG still holds a majority of the ordinary voting shares and the rest of the Porsche AG voting shares are held by the family holding company that also holds the controlling shares of VW AG. At the moment, the same person is also CEO of both companies.
moberley··on Utah officials sued over failure to save Great Salt Lake
Unfortunately the article doesn't get into too much detail about the particular legal argument being made.

Given the state government has taken actions intended to address the water level in the lake it would appear that the fact of the water level being a problem isn't the main point of dispute. I'm not entirely familiar with US law but I guess the legal question might be whether the state's actions are sufficient to protect the lake and also whether the sufficiency or insufficiency is a justiciable matter (rather than a political/legislative one).

This seems to be a copy of the original written arguments from the plaintiffs. [1]

moberley··on Stack Overflow's CEO Doesn't Understand Stack Overflow
I think that it did. It was initially created by only a few people in 2008 [1] but then Joel Spolsky wrote a blog post about seeking VC investment in early 2010 [2] and the series A was announced in May that year [3]. The VC investment round was around the same time as the company announced the free Stack Exchange network for other topics not covered by their original site [4].

moberley··on Bank transfers as a payment method (2021)
I don't know about the banks but some credit union accounts have a fee for it.
moberley··on Actors decry 'existential crisis' over AI-generated ‘synthetic’ actors
It does not invalidate the point of this comment, but in the context of this article -- the contract dispute between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP -- Netflix is a "Hollywood studio". Netflix joined the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in 2021.

moberley··on Bank transfers as a payment method (2021)
If the e-transfer involves a credit union it can take much longer than several minutes at least that is the case in the rural area where I live.
moberley··on Bank transfers as a payment method (2021)
It is not universally free unfortunately.
moberley··on I'm a paid user of Threads[.com] – No trademark?
I don't know when they added it but Threads, Inc now has a prominent "We are not associated with Instagram" near the top of the page at Threads.com.
moberley··on Threads.net
I wonder if there will be any confusion issues with Threads.com which is some kind of team communication app (advertises itself as a Slack replacement for makers).

moberley··on Bill C-18: Google to remove news links in Canada over online news law
On YouTube I would think the CBC receives the same monetization deal as any other YouTuber.
moberley··on Pixar was never a masterpiece factory
Logan was produced by 20th Century Fox.

To the best of my knowledge the X-Men films made before Disney acquired the X-Men rights in 2019 (along with the rest of Fox) were made in partnership with Marvel Entertainment (the publishing and licensing company) and not Marvel Studios (the Disney "cinematic universe" subsidiary).

moberley··on Huawei filed “Vision Pro” trademark in 2019 – may force Apple to rebrand headset
It would unusual for Apple but it would not be the first time a company has sold a product under different names in different jurisdictions.
