Thanks for having the courage to write this. I couldnt agree more. I find the risk assessment argument of the thread parent really twisted. Younger people effectively have no risk of dying from covid. Elderly have. And now, the left is trying to force everyone to vaccinate, no matter how good or bad their immune system might be. This world has become a place I actually really dont want to live in. If this trend really wins and people accept a world of forced vaccination and masks and restrictions of public areas, I prefer to contract covid and die.
It seems google has lost its ability to block spam effectively. Since a few months, I notice an increase amount of outright scam being promoted on YT. I even got a ad for a fake Musk telling people to invest in a shady bitcoin scheme. Knowing that Google is willing to let these slip through just to maximize their ad revenue is really a warning sign that this company, no matter how large it might be by now, should not be trusted anymore.
The one cli tool that saves me the most time is "gh", and its predecessor "hub". Not having to interact with a website to submit a PR, issue, or just fork a repo, is a blessing. I wish more sites would ship a cannonicla tool to use their APIs...
Wow. This is the kind of information that really should be spread more. The article, and the spotting game! In fact, if there were a fundraiser to promote the game, I would be willing to donate $20. It feels like this could make a difference if more people knew about it.
In my experience, conferences are a very nice to have, unique experiences, interesting people. But productivity? No. When it comes to being productive, I get far more done sitting at my desk at home. I totally understand that conferences are a really nice thing to go to for contributors. But its more a sort of compensation for unpaied work. At some point, you are invited to go to a foreign country, and you get a sort of geek-holiday. Thats nice. But I never considered it essential for my contributions.
In fact, my impression actually turned around when the "bring your children" thing started to be normal. I vividly remember a few talks at DebConf where I was not able to follow the speaker because of verbal small children in the talk room. Since then, I really really prefer to listen to talk recordings at home.
You are aware that PHP was made popular roughly 20 years ago, right? In any case, I agree with your theoretical approach, however, I think you are ignoring the reality of "coders" out there. Security is still a niech topic in CS. Most people still want to get their work done, not caring about security at all.
Wow, what a slap in the face of people who cant get children for one reason or another. Its fine that you are happy with parenting, but please consider what sentences like this can do to others.
Sure, only "priviledged" people should have children. Elitist thinking ahoy! Nope man, these days, with the amount of people on this planet, nobody really needs more of them, no matter what nice elitist excuse the individual finds.
In defense of PHP, this is probably due to simplicity. PHP got many people started with server side web development, and docs were supposed to be "simple". The thinking back then probably was "if we make the example more complicated, we will loose people", which was probably even true for the target audience.
This is very likely. And has already been said by various critics already months ago. But these people were silenced or ridiculed, because it apparently was already decided the vaccines need to be sold.
I use the phrase "K ohne I" since years already. Which basically means "künstlich ohne Intelligenz". We all saw this coming. The topic has been gone over in scifi literature. And still, big tech decided its time to roll it out. "A human would also not be perfect, and we claim this algo is better then the avg. human" is the last thing you hear before discriminating tech is rolled out. And since politics is in the grip of commerce, regulations will not happen early enough. We are fucked. 2040 will be horrible.
Consumerism paired with sensationalism. Some people take psychedelics like others consume television... To amuse themselves. Remember what Tim Leary wrote in the psychedelic experience? If you have hallucinations, you're doing something wrong. But that is getting a bit off-topic regarding the original post.
If someone puts a posting on the net, they likely have to accept that there will be reactions to it. That said, I am not looking forward to a fist-fight with a wanna-be-monk, so distance is probably the key. Dont you feel a fist-fighting drinker is a rather comical mindfulness practicioner? A bit like the gay nazi, or whatever stereotypical contradiction you wanna imagine.
Which is an indication that the whole system is simply too weak. EU was originally founded to make trade easier. Even the temporary removal of borders for EU citizens was only done to fasciliate trade, the free travel amongst EU states was a nice side effect which could also be used to lure the citizens into believing the EU was actually more. The social apsect was originally only a side effect of fasciliatating trade. And now that it starts to show that the different member states have different political agendas, and not everything can be pacified by just making commerce happy, the system starts to crumble. I still remember the biggest fear of EU when brexit came up. That more member states could have a similar idea. That isn't particularily showing strength and confidence.
> This terrain was fresh. I had never previously experienced a psychotic episode and have no history of mental illness besides occasional bouts of mild anxiety and depression.
...
> Why did I start meditating? The short answer is that in 2009 I started a fist fight in a French Quarter bar over some jambalaya, a steamy kiss, and a stray comment I didn’t take fondly. The evening ended hours later after I broke a window with my fist, misplaced my shirt, and guzzled about 16 bottles of Miller High Life.
YYMMV, but I feel the author is having problems they dont want to really accept. That is what the contradiction in the two quotes above indicates.
Aside from that, I couldn't help but think about people having access to too many psychedelics. For a while, tripping can give you the most profound experiences ever. But after a while, it sort of becomes mondane, and this is when the bad trip probability suddenly skyrockets. Or, put another way, even Siddhartha didn't find awakening in the samana practices. They were only the first step (of three) to reach his goal. You can overdo everything, even the very very nice things.
Ui, "young nations", that sounds like a wonderful excuse. Of course, since these nations are young, almost infants actually, they need protection, right? Like small children sitting in a school bus? The first thing that came to mind when I read "young nations" was israel. A wonderful young state mostly occupied with killing off the people who were living on that land prior before the british decided to give it away. Wonderful thing such young nations.
Well, my condolences then. I dont know where this sentiment comes from that left/green is automatically good and democratic. Thats a really weird propaganda bit that went through almost everywhere.
If they have a even harder life to manage, I have no problem accepting that. However, you will not find many people below me, so good luck with your "I will get you" argument.
You ask me who I am? I had a more complicated and fucked up life then 99% of the population, if not 99.99%. So I feel fucking qualified to tell others to get their shit together. Yes. And this nosey type of writing of yours is not going to change my mind.
I hear what you are saying. However, I cant get rid of the feeling that this attitude of "everyones pain is important" actually leads to people falling in love with their various pains, instead of actually trying to fight them. Regarding depression. I had a phase of depression for several years, in addition to my disability. This gave me yet more incentive to fight the depression, because you know, being depressed and fucking blind isn't really a state you want to stay in.
I realize everyone has their own story, and things feel differently to different people. But I cant get rid of the feeling that we are breeding unhappy people because we promise them support an every level, no matter what their story might be. IOW, I am not convinced that this new type of social pampering is actually healthy to the individual.
I had to pay a visit to my doctor roughly every 6 months to get rid of excessive ear wax. To the point where I almost stopped hearing anything on my right ear. After 30 times going to the doc, I actually bought myself this big water-shooting syringe. Its so much easier to just do it at home, and another good reason to not sit in a public waiting room during these times. I figured, if a nurse is allowed to do this, I can likely do it myself. And thats pretty much true. I wonder how many things we will find that actually dont require an expensive trained person in the medical areas. I guess there is a hidden trend to fixing things up yourself after COVID. Wonder how much money the med-bussiness is loosing now that people start to realize they dont need a doctor for every hickup.
