mitchellhislop··on Post-Mortem for Google Compute Engine’s Global Outage on April 11
Freedom (TM) is the sequel, and the author (Daniel Suarez) has a few other near-term what-if-this-all-goes-skynet books which are equally good.

Rackspace has been a publicly traded company for a while now, and launched in 1998. They are way bigger than Digital Ocean.

Rackspace's goal is to kill the patents. The people can move on, but the would need new IP.

Could I talk you into sharing that list?

I have been thinking I should be more proactive with my congresscritters. It seems I am always sending reactive messages.

You are right on that citation. Awesome, awesome book that really opened my eyes (as a 24 year old) as to just how far things had come.
mitchellhislop··on How Google Sliced Away Our Knife Ads
I have seen a few knife groups using this exact same reasoning - I think it just gets heard less because the firearm part of the "arms" is the hot national topic, and Congress has made very few laws that limit knives/other arms - most of those are state laws.
mitchellhislop··on How Google Sliced Away Our Knife Ads
>I fail to see the non-weapon use for a knife that is small (and therefore concealable) and also opens quickly

I am an Eagle scout. Being able to quickly pull a knife out and open it one handed, due to it being assisted opening and small enough to clip into my pocket, has been beneficial more time than I can count.

I have had a knife in my pocket nearly every day since high school. I have used it thousands of times in that time period. I never once used it as a weapon.

mitchellhislop··on How Google Sliced Away Our Knife Ads
> clearly intended to be used as weapons

Knives are horrible, horrible weapons.

These are clearly NOT intended to be used as weapons, as they are normal, everyday lock-back knives. Knives intended to be weapons, such as those modeled after the Krambit design, are fairly rare in public, especially among people who use knives (their shape and features make them much less useful). Your outrage is misplaced - we are not having a weapon talk.

Google not allowing ads for something that is legal is bullshit. Them not allowing ads for some people, but allowing them for others, over the same product, is evil.

I bet he meant employee.

mitchellhislop··on The Redhat of Drupal
You are honestly making a case that someone did ANYTHING that resembled research, and still didn't figure out that they made their chief competitor, who is currently doing far better than them?

Sorry, I just can't make that leap. The SERP for 'Automattic' is all that should have been required to move on.

mitchellhislop··on How Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote, Works
I, for one, am VERY excited to see the todo features that he hinted at in the article. Evernote is fantastic, and I'm not sure it would be a main todo system, but if there is an area it has been lacking, it is in the handling of todos.

mitchellhislop··on NexPhone: One device to rule them all
3. Motorola tried this EXACT play with the Atrix, and it was a disaster.
mitchellhislop··on NexPhone: One device to rule them all
Also, syncing things is not as much of a headache anymore - circa 2006/7/8, this is a great idea. In the time of Dropbox, GMail, Netflix, and Github, there is no pain pushing me away from just using 4-6 different devices. I have not run into the "I need a file but it is only on my laptop which is 50 miles away" issue in several years now.

Also, seeing what a MASSIVE flop the Moto Atrix was (which was this exact idea, to a T - at least it was in the demo at CES), I have little hope of seeing this work. If a top-5 phone company fails at it, why should I think a crowdfunded version should do any better?

mitchellhislop··on The weakest link by far is Apple
In the Wired article, they mention that they were able to reproduce it. It seems that is their policy, and in my opinion, that policy is the mistake. There should be no easy way to end-run user defined security like this - Mat could have the most secure account in the world, doing everything right, and this still would have gotten him hacked. That is a problem, and a big one.
mitchellhislop··on Dropbox confirms it got hacked, will offer two-factor authentication
The new outlook.com also does not respect the RFC in this case, which I thought was especially funny.
mitchellhislop··on Lamar Smith trying to quietly revive SOPA
I just want to point out that those were done by two different groups - the commercial was from TestPAC, a PAC started and run on Reddit. They also put up a billboard. Fight for the Future is separate. The thread you linked to on reddit was a post by Andy Posterick, Treasure of TestPAC

(Disclaimer: I helped do the TestPAC billboard and commercial as an officer in the PAC)

mitchellhislop··on Cue: The 10 hour scramble to launch two days early
Cue puts smarts behind all that data.

Case in point: this last Wednesday, I had a going away dinner for a friend. This was put on my GCal. This came via a Facebook message. Without me doing anything, it put 2+2 together. When I opened Cue that morning, there was the event, with a link to the message.

When I fly in August, it knows enough to put all my travel info (passes, emails, events, etc) together in the same way.

Search is still there, and it still rocks. The added AI on top of that makes this killer - I would have used Greplin to surface that data, but Cue was smart enough to do it for me. It's solving a roughly analogous problem, but doing it in a much smarter, faster way.

mitchellhislop··on Apple iOS6 Preview
Apple seems to have moved away from disallowing apps for "duplicate core functionality" - we have GVoice, Sparrow, Camera+ now. I don't see how they could not allow it.

mitchellhislop··on Instapaper Finally Makes Its Android Debut, And It’s Almost Amazing
I always loved Instapaper, but the single focus killed it for me. Pocket, which looks just as pretty (if not more so - the colors do add a lot), can also handle other types of media.

I would end up with about 10 videos on Pinboard, a handful of presentations, and a dozen articles by the end of a week. Pocket can handle all those. Instapaper meant I needed other services to fully capture all the media I wanted to deal with.

Easy choice.
