misterS··on Amon Tobin – Foley Room site (2007)
I was amazed that the site still runs, apparently still using the same engine.

But it seems that it was a flash site (of course), and archive.org seems to replace Flash Player with "Ruffle" [1]. Either that, or someone of Tobin's team replaced Flash with Ruffle >= 2019.

misterS··on Ideal monitor rotation for programmers (2021)
Starting a comment with «yawn» immediately shows dismissal of and disrespect for the person you're replying to.

You might want to refresh your memory of HN's guidelines. Link at the bottom.

misterS··on The worst thing about Jenkins is that it works (2019)
TIL. https://plugins.jenkins.io/blueocean/

   Blue Ocean status

Blue Ocean will not receive further functionality updates.
Blue Ocean will continue to provide easy-to-use Pipeline visualization, but it will not be enhanced further. It will only receive selective updates for significant security issues or functional defects.
misterS··on VirtualBox 7.0.10 download links have disappeared
> Be specially careful when installing their extension pack, as it is an evaluation license.

Our company was targeted by Oracle Sales because they detected mere _downloads_ from our IP range. They couldn't prove any installations, but of course wanted the company to pay for commercial licenses.

Im not sure about the details, but in the end I think we bought a couple of licences & then blocked all URLs for the extension pack company-wide.

misterS··on Immutable Data (2015)
This works great for password resets.

It does not work if you actually want to send emails, for instance notifications.

misterS··on Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know
Instinctively applying Pascal case, maybe?
misterS··on Goiânia Accident
Plainly Difficult has a nice video about this accident:

misterS··on Datasette is my data hammer
I did, too :)

For those that don't know: Datasette is the author/curator of https://musicforprogramming.net

misterS··on Color Formats in CSS
That's a really nifty visualisation of the 140 named web colors.
misterS··on Why “go nuts, show nuts” doesn’t work in 2022
I did not and can't downvote, no I have no stake in this.

That said, in my opinion people working in such a workplace reading a post "Why “go nuts, show nuts” doesn’t work in 2022" should be savvy enough to not click links, or read the post in the first place.

Also, ironically, the fact that we have to mark such links (to Wikipedia!) as NSFW is exactly what this particular comment chain is about, no?

misterS··on An incident impacting 5M accounts and private information on Twitter
Two days ago, I've tried to create an account tied only to an email. During account creation, the wizard suddenly inserted an additional step and required my to enter a phone number.

I realise though that this is possibly an anti-spam measure (which I'm in favour of), since I've connected through Tor when creating the account. But this procedure stands in stark contrast to the advise given in the article.

misterS··on Rich Text Editor for React
We use Quill, too, we only need rudimentary features, though.

Its maintenance status is... questionable, although my information is out of date (see last paragraph).

* Github: https://github.com/quilljs/quill/ * It's latest release was 2019-09-09 – which is _ages_ in term of a JS library. * There's tons of open issues, the maintainer was (or still is) rather quiet. * It's pretty much a one-man-show. Although now that I look at it, the last few months a second contributor appeared. * Apparently there is a v2 in the works, but nobody know when it is due nor what its status is. * There were issue that asked whether the project was abandoned. The issues went unanswered, and then were deleted.

To be fair: development seems to have picked up again. There were sporadic commits at the end of 2021, and I now see that there are a few this year, too.

misterS··on GraphQL Is a Trap?
Please provide some context, instead of just dumping an URL.
misterS··on Dune: Spice Wars
My guess is that the graphical designers are to blame for this – and of course whatever PM signed off on that.
misterS··on [dead]
> kids in first year of school should know how to draw flag from memory

Roman Mars taught me that – well Ted Kaye, but Roman taught me in his seminal TED talk [1].

misterS··on Jetbrains Upsource has been discontinued
While I can understand their reasons for shutting Upsource down, I think the very same reason will prevent users from migrating to their preferred tool-suite ("Space" [1]): users of Upsource very likely already _have_ existing tools for hosting repositories, communicating, issue tracking, etc. It seems strange to me to expect people would abandon their existing toolchain in favour of Space, just to keep using Upsource.

misterS··on AirPods don't “just work”
This is called "dark mode" nowadays, and it's a feature.
misterS··on Software Engineering Salaries in Europe vs. the United States
Let me assure you that not all European developers have such generous conditions.
misterS··on Clever carpentry helps bees fix wild honeycombs

misterS··on Farmers always worked from home
> and are financially secure.

This is the key point. I can imagine being a farmer is a lot more nerve wracking if e.g. bad whether destroys your year's harvest – for the third time in a row.

If you're financially secure, any job is less stressful, regardless whether you're self employed or not.

misterS··on Apple's DocC is excellent, but unusable for open source projects
The Windows 95 ".chm" help pages [1] were basically HTML pages, displayed in an application embedding Internet Explorer. IIRC this lead to login exploits (since the login screen was able to show help pages).

misterS··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
I had to look this up to check if it was sarcasm or not.

Apparently it's not, and `_optout` for Windows is real. FML.

misterS··on Everyone is still terrible at creating software at scale
I guess (and I have no way to verify this, it's really just a guess) that the number of developers that worked on the Windows code base in its 35 year history is in the same order, if not higher.
misterS··on DeaDBeeF – A modular audio player for Unix-like systems
There's https://www.strawberrymusicplayer.org/, a fork of Clementine, apparently created due to Clementine's inactivity. I've used it on and off on MacOS, but had some nasty locks which crashed the application.

But speaking of Clementine: I'm amazed that development seems to have picked up again, commits are happening on Github ( https://github.com/clementine-player/Clementine) Last time I checked the repo it was silent.

misterS··on ISO 8601: a better date format
Stuff like this is the reason why I, as a non-american software engineer, use `US_en` layouts on all my machines.
misterS··on I Miss My Bar
> anyone who tells you "You must do this for the saftey of others" can go fuck themselves. You have no right to tell me what I can and can't do as long as i am not causing DIRECT harm to you.

Do you not count spreading a virus & possibly infecting others as causing direct harm?

misterS··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
But I bet the beer would not taste as good.
misterS··on Almost everything on computers is perceptually slower than it was in 1983 (2017)
I'm not disagreeing, but just because something uses more memory does not mean it's slower per se.
misterS··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
> There isn’t anyone popping over my shoulder, and general interruptions are almost nil in my case. I think a lot of people are going to be super surprised what a quiet room and your playlist of choice can do to increase productivity. Just my 2 cents.

It's the same for me – at home, and the opposite at the office. I live alone.

misterS··on Deep Space Network Now: Status of communications with our deep space explorers
Dave Jones of EEVBlog has a nice series of videos talking to Richard Stephenson, Operations Supervisor at the DSN's Canberra site.

There are also a couple of Behinde the Scenes videos.
