minkeymaniac··on Being bilingual makes swearing easier
I was born in Croatia but grew up in Amsterdam and have been living for 20+ years in the US. In Holland swearing involves a lot of diseases.. for example klerelijer (cholera sufferer) kankerlijer or krijg de kanker (cancer sufferer, get cancer) In Croatia it's more like fuck your mother (jebem ti mater) God fucks your mother (jebo ti Bog mater)

In Istria we have a nicer version of telling someone to fuck God (jebi Boga) Marry God (idi Boga ženit)... you would say that to family members when you don't want to be vulgar but the message is still more or less the same :-)

minkeymaniac··on Good Books for a Lousy Year
In that case read the book "Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World" from that list first. You will notice that the people that came up with solutions came from a total different discipline, while the people in that field were stuck
minkeymaniac··on Paris to ‘get rid of 70k parking spaces’
I wonder if central park and the other parks brings that down compared to Paris
minkeymaniac··on Diego Maradona has died
he had heavenly feet... and godly hands......
minkeymaniac··on Body found in Canada identified as neo-nazi spam king
It says it right in the article... "A key subject of the book Spam Kings by Brian McWilliams, Hawke was a Jewish-born American who’d legally changed his name from Andrew Britt Greenbaum. For many years, Hawke was a big time purveyor of spam emails hawking pornography and male enhancement supplements, such as herbal Viagra."
minkeymaniac··on The Age of Scurvy (2017)
A good book is also the Terror by Dan Simmons, goes into more than scurvy..... https://www.amazon.com/Terror-Dan-Simmons/dp/0316486094

Just finished it yesterday.. recommended!!

minkeymaniac··on We deleted the production database by accident
That is why we can only access the prod db from a jump box in our shop.... And even then it's just certain people with less privileges than a sysadmin account. No way you can do this accidentally from your laptop then...
minkeymaniac··on Next-Level SSD Performance – Samsung 980 Pro 1TB Review
I used those with SQL Server back in the day. Sandisk bought them
minkeymaniac··on How can we, as web professionals, help to make the web more energy efficient?
You can maybe start charging some of these mobile devices via Solar Power Bank https://amzn.to/2RE10uT They can charge while you walk around by placing the panels on your backpack...

I know it's a small percentage of overall use, but if enough people start using solar to charge their devices and maybe in the future laptop batteries, cars and houses it's a step in the right direction

The biggest offender is the AC in the summer in the US... office is so cold people have to bring sweaters and vests

minkeymaniac··on Vitamin D Insufficiency is Prevalent in Severe Covid-19
It's both isn't? In pill form it's a vitamin... from the sun it's a hormone
minkeymaniac··on List of oldest continuously inhabited cities
If you ever go to Pula, make sure to visit the Arena (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pula_Arena) and pass by Zlatna Vrata (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_of_the_Sergii) both are ~2000 year old
minkeymaniac··on The global oil market is broken, drowning in crude nobody needs
Why not just buy an OIL ETF when you think it hit the bottom.. for example https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/OIL?p=OIL
minkeymaniac··on Verlan: French slang that inverses words
Same exists in Croatian... vozdra was very common....

The more interesting one is when you add the letter P and the syllable after the syllable For example.... Ja sam lud (I am nuts) becomes Japa sapam lupud or Ti si štupido (you are dumb/stupid ... more used in Istria instead of glup/budala) becomes tipi sipi štupuipidopo

Growing up in Holland there is no such thing really in Dutch... there is plat Amsterdams or Bargoens ... so whenever I spent time in Croatia with family I practiced my Šatrovački :-)

minkeymaniac··on Surgery for Blocked Arteries Is Often Unwarranted, Researchers Find
Also mentioned in the book Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World
minkeymaniac··on High level introduction to How Database internally work
1st image has paser instead of parser...

Same here, heading has parser, sentence has paser

PARSER Paser used to generate a parse tree by reading a stream of tokens

minkeymaniac··on The Fertility Doctor’s Secret
I have 3 kids conceived by IVF as well. We donated the leftover fertilized eggs and a couple has now a 12 year old daughter. I have seen the pictures and my 3 kids know that they have a biological sister out there. It will be interesting to see if she will contact us once and if she finds out (We allowed for the option to contact us)
minkeymaniac··on The Fertility Doctor’s Secret
I would say yes.... for example if heart disease doesn't run in your 'family' but it does in the doctor's, it would be good to know.... same is true for other diseases
minkeymaniac··on It’s Time to Ditch Google Analytics
