mingyeow··on Thoughts on slowing the fuck down
“ The fundamental ceiling of what an LLM can do when connected to an IDE is incredible, and orders of magnitude higher than the limits of any no-code / low-code platform conceived thus far.”

Curious on this - why?

mingyeow··on Gandalf – Game to make an LLM reveal a secret password
Quick question - what’s the best way to get started in building a game like this, where you feed in some data like a password, and you build simple models on top of it?
mingyeow··on Someone asked an autonomous AI to 'destroy humanity'
Agreed. But examples here will be super helpful!
mingyeow··on Ask HN: Open source LLM for commercial use?
Noob question here - what’s the best tutorials to get started in mixing LLM models and building on top of one another, assuming very good programming background but little AI background? I asked chatGPT this question, and it was helpful but not comprehensive, but I figure intelligent humans on this forum will give the best answers.
mingyeow··on Diem – Facebook open source Cryptocurrency written in Rust
This wins comment of the year for me
mingyeow··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
I’m working on interoperability between blockchains. The number and variety of blockchains are exploding and approaches so far have been sharply lacking - failing to tackle key problems in decentralizing, generalizing, data translation and the economics of providing a robust, secure interchain operability.

Moving from largely centralized and specific message passing and token bridging into general interoperability that is decentralized and modular for any new blockchain or multi-chain protocol to extend and build on top of is a huge challenge.

mingyeow··on U.S. Says It Removed Malware Worldwide, Pre-Empting Russian Cyberattack

The court orders allowed the F.B.I. to go into domestic corporate networks and remove the malware, sometimes without the company’s knowledge.

This is actually extremely freaky.
mingyeow··on An introduction to type programming in TypeScript
This is fantastic writing:

After writing TypeScript for a while, it occurred to me that the TypeScript language actually consists of two sub-languages - one is JavaScript, and the other is the type language.

For the JavaScript language, the world is made of JavaScript values; for the type language, the world is made of types.
mingyeow··on Introduction to Hippo: The WebAssembly PaaS
This looks amazing, but as a complete n00b to wasm (I am familiar w rust and web tech), is there a simple overview on how I can take the compiled program and use in a development or production environment?

I read through the tutorial, but this is still not totally clear to me.

mingyeow··on Insomnia: To Pursue Sleep So Hard You Become Invigorated by the Chase
I had signs of insomnia in the last couple of years. Tried all the usual techniques, and I realized those just do not work for one simple reason - that the moment i do not fall asleep, i become frustrated. And that frustration in turn makes sleeping much harder.

So, I tried doing the exact opposite, and my sleep has been tremendously better since.

Essentially, i force myself to keep my eyes open. When I catch myself falling asleep, I actually force myself to keep them often again. Before i know it, it is morning.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but all my insomnia problems are over, including on a plane. Would love to know if it works for others, or if it is just a silly thing that works for only me.

mingyeow··on The Amazon Machine
You can judge the post on its own merit - I do think a number of fairly legit and decent points were brought up.

Upbeat is the major innovator in PR today, no one else is even close.
mingyeow··on Who is Anthony Levandowski, and why is Google suing him?
I am actually sincerely curious - is this considered a felony if proven? Seems like a major offense to steal such a massive amount of information blatantly for self enrichment, even if done under the missive of "changing the world"

This cannot end well.

mingyeow··on Facebook Ordered to Pay $500M in Oculus Lawsuit
that was the conclusion i jumped to, but i realized that this is not actually the case if i read the details right.
mingyeow··on Ask HN: Which developers do you closely follow?
Yes, Steve is the best person on the internet indeed! Always outspoken, always protective, never nasty
mingyeow··on It’s not the methods that are Agile, it’s the people
I love your description. That said, that is more "well-oiled" than agile. Agile have been taken over by standard and process gurus that want the certainty of a process rather than the ambiguities of people.
mingyeow··on Chevrolet Bolt EV Is the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year
This is a genius quote. batteries and self driving car systems will be commoditized.
mingyeow··on Why is machine learning ‘hard’?
"And all of that has nothing even to do with CS." -> therein lies the kicker! Consumer level (including sass) apps require very real user and business tradeoffs. That tradeoff is rarely discussed, which i honestly find very curious in and of itself.

mingyeow··on Autodesk Buys Socialcam for $60M
PG - are you serious? you seriously think that their decline in growth comes from anything other than facebook users seeing through their scam and facebook itself shutting off their spam channels?

You think that there is any chance in hell that they can maintain that kind of growth. Come on

mingyeow··on Autodesk Buys Socialcam for $60M
The founders will be writing a ton of articles, giving a lot of talks, and advising a lot of companies on how to build successful companies and products.

Just do not expect them to be anything but honest.

mingyeow··on Facebook fixes logout issue
"There is a bug where a_user was not cleared on logout. We will be fixing that today."

PR speak. This seems much less like a bug to me, more like a poorly contemplated decision.

What seems more likely is that they were contemplating what they should do, and given the general direction Facebook is headed, they probably thought little of just leaving it in.

I love the facebook guys, but calling it a bug as opposed to a non-malicious decision is just PR speak

mingyeow··on Facebook's Newest Problem: Being Boring
This is a poorly researched article that takes a few anecdotes from him, his observations about his friends, and choice quotes from random articles that support his viewpoint.

I would wager that from a data point of view, facebook page views and retention is likely to be stronger than ever.
