mingabunga··on It’s Time to Build
It's because we're reactive. Who wants to spend money on something which might happen.
mingabunga··on Ask HN: What physical product do you make?
When not running my software biz, I make exercise machines which use flywheels for resistance. The difference compared to traditional weights is you get constant resistance at all angles throughout the entire range of movement. Plus it allows many exercises in a compact package, and the resistance can be variable based on how hard you work. It also includes an app + sensor (Electronic hardware is a complete PIA, but we got there in the end) https://exerflysport.com
mingabunga··on Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?
and causing the deaths of >80 year olds, thus reducing the costs of dependency on the health system? #consipracy :)
mingabunga··on Show HN: HideAway – An attempt at making a better VPN
We're finishing up the Windows version first, so implementing a new gui now so custom rules can be used (rules are already done in the back end). Then we can do the Mac version. Sorry can't give an ETA, it's bound to be wrong.
mingabunga··on Show HN: HideAway – An attempt at making a better VPN
We've been working on making a better VPN for a few years now to address things like speed and flexibility.

Many people are interested in VPN speed/performance, so we've made that a focus.

1. Should be as fast or faster than your base internet speed. You shouldn't lose any speed.

2. Uses the same encryption as Wireguard, AEAD - ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption with 256-bit key size, 96-bit nonce size and 128-bit MAC size.

3. Server side is so efficient we can fit thousands of people on a cheap $10 VPS gigabit server without any loss in performance. Really only limited by the bandwidth of the host. CPU rarely exceeds 10%.

4. Instant connection to locations, no waiting to connect or disconnect. Plus your connection roams seamlessly between wifi, ethernet and mobile.

5. Everything resides in memory on the server, and of course there's no logging.

Coming up soon we'll be introducing custom rules, so you'll be able to redirect apps, domains, ports, cidr/subnets to different locations simultaneously. So you setup your custom rules and you won't need to manually turn on/off your VPN again. Along with redirect, there's also block and ignore. Your custom rules are stored locally on your machine, so there's no logging of these either. For example, you could redirect your whole computer to the UK, except gmail.com stays at your location, youtube.com is in the USA, outlook.exe is in Australia, and so on.

At the moment it's Windows only, but it has been engineered with cross-platform in mind (just need to find time to interface with the Mac and Linux TCP/IP stack), plus Android version is not far off.

mingabunga··on Thoughts On a Year of Exercise
For me it was $60 a session
mingabunga··on Thoughts On a Year of Exercise
Totally agree. I did this after a few years off being a competitive track athlete, and trying different sports. I got a personal trainer to come to my house 3 times a week at 6am. It works because you don't have to think about what to do, you're just told to do it. You can't get out of it because they're coming knocking on your door at 6am, and you end up having some fun and interesting conversations. That got me back in to track athletics with a coach and it's something I look forward to every day.
mingabunga··on How computers wrote BBC election result stories
I think arria.com do Natural Language Generation (NLG) with analysis.
mingabunga··on Tell HN: Digicert is turning into Symantec
It's because you're logged in as an existing user. Just use a different email address to get a new certificate and sign up with that to get the discount. Then after you get the cheaper certificate, ask support to merge the accounts.
mingabunga··on Ripe NIC: 'In Five Weeks We'll Run Out of IPv4 Internet Addresses'
Some ISPs are resorting to CGNAT eg. https://help.2degreesmobile.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/40...
mingabunga··on Ultraprocessed Foods – A New Theory of Obesity
I agree, was in the US recently and so many foods are much sweeter than in other countries. USA is really good at sugar. Even the ice cream was much sweeter - looking at you Ben and Jerry's. I bought some organic almond butter, and it had sugar in it! Why?!
mingabunga··on Show HN: Ananas – a hackable data tool for beginners
Thought about adding some words to the data output using natural language generation? Eg arria.com or other nlg vendor?
mingabunga··on Wireguard-docs: Setup, usage, configuration, and a full example
No, it's not, it's our own implementation (except for the encryption part of course). We did a version similar to how Wireguard does it (UDP only) a few years back, but ran in to issues, so we ended up re-doing it with some different optimizations and UDP and TCP.
mingabunga··on Wireguard-docs: Setup, usage, configuration, and a full example
We've been working on a Windows version for the past few years, same idea - instant connection/disconnection, crazy fast, modern encryption. Uses only 10% of a single server cpu at gigabit speed. Almost finished, just adding in encryption for TCP (UDP and DNS already done). Shameless self promotion: https://www.firetrust.com/products/hideaway-secure-unlimited...
mingabunga··on Ask HN: How can I work towards building a company while employed?
Also, it's easy to get caught up in daily stuff after work, so you have to make it a priority above most other things.
mingabunga··on Atta Elayyan, Developer of MetroTube and LazyWorm Apps, Killed in Christchurch
Thanks for writing this - it's an awesome read about a fantastic guy. Atta worked for me for 7 years in Christchurch (the last 3-4 years he was doing these apps on the side, then setting up his business). He was a lovely positive guy and I had total respect for him. Our two companies would catchup occasionally and we all enjoyed his company. He was a real role model to anyone who wanted to be the best they can. It's such a great shame this has happened and I feel so sad for his family (his father was also shot but is in Hospital). Unbelievable that this has happened.
mingabunga··on Android Q Beta
I hope with the wifi connectivity changes, we'll be able to connect wifi to IOT devices without losing the 3G/4G connection at the same time.
mingabunga··on I still miss my headphone jack, and I want it back
Reminds me recently when I was out and was asked to use my phone to play some music through one of those external speakers for an event, went to plug the cable in to my phone... Oh that's right, my new Pixel 2 requires a dongle which no one carries around with them.
mingabunga··on The World’s Fastest Man (2014)
Came here to read about Usain Bolt, and instead read a great article about another brilliant guy.
mingabunga··on Why the New V8 Is So Damn Fast
same ha ha. Interested either way
mingabunga··on Why restaurants became so loud
agree, nothing worse than the barista banging whatever it is to remove the coffee grounds. I know the noise is trying to create a busy buzz, but it's ridiculous after a while. Like working in a tool shop.
mingabunga··on NLP-generated summaries could replace traditional headlines
Isn't it actually called natural language generation, or NLG?
mingabunga··on Ask HN: How do you boost/improve your immune system?
Haven't been sick for 6 years - cold/flu/any sickness. I put it down to intermittent fasting which I started at the same time. I eat about once a day in the evenings (I eat a lot then) although I often snack before exercise early to mid afternoon. There's been a couple of times where I've felt I'm coming down with a cold, and then it goes away like nothing happened. Writing this, I actually went out last night, had food and beers and woke in the night with that tell tale scratchy one side of my throat, then woke up this morning and nothing. I've found that if I feel something coming on, I eat nothing then it goes away. Water is obviously ok. You know how when you get really sick you lose your appetite, I think it might have something to do with that. I reckon eating is quite an energy hog, so if you don't eat then you can leave your body the resources it needs to fight a cold. All this is just anecdotal, but I'm sticking to it because having a cold is such a waste of time/so annoying.
mingabunga··on Our relationship with teeth is uneven, messy and grim
Not rinsing at all. It just stays on there, bit weird to begin with but you get used to it.
mingabunga··on Our relationship with teeth is uneven, messy and grim
Just my 2 cents. 13 years ago I used to always have cavities every time I went to the dentist. Then got told to leave toothpaste on my teeth instead of rinsing after brushing (I only brush once a day). Haven't had any issues since, so I'm guessing the floride has a local effect.
mingabunga··on Show HN: HoneyMoney – 100% more Bees than any other personal finance software
It's just a catchy headline, it doesn't really make sense but is comical/nonsense so it makes you stop and pay attention to it. I think it's brilliant.
mingabunga··on My account is sending spam emails
You could make a filter like this: The email is spam if FROM and TO address = my.email.fake@gmail.com AND Return-Path is not = my.email.fake@gmail.com

So you could still send emails to your self and they would not get flagged as spam.

mingabunga··on It’s time to give Firefox a fresh chance
Found one the other day, https://athletigen.com/ can't login unless using Chrome
mingabunga··on Facebook has lost $100B in 10 days and now advertisers are pulling out
Agree, it's a great platform for advertisers and they know it's great for targeting and conversions. Most of the outrage and awareness seems to be in the tech sphere (the vocal minority?) while the rest of the world just gets on with it.
mingabunga··on Counting Calories Is Not the Key to Weight Loss, New Study Finds
empty calories = "calories without the nutrition" is another good way to explain it
