mikeytown2··on Free Land – Living Off Grid With No Money
You can get Lifepo4 for roughly $100 per kWh of storage is you do a group buy on 272 ah cells. This is cheaper than lead and is a better chemistry from what I've seen.
mikeytown2··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
You can do a hybrid approach with the hot metal burn chamber for wood gas and earthen materials to slowly radiate the heat. This is called a rocket mass heater. The exhaust temperature is usually below 100C and often smokeless (a complete burn). Using a fan to extract heat from the final vertical stack (pipe around the exhaust with air running by) can give you an exhaust temperature of around 40C. Here's a quick 3 minute video that explains the concept; there's other YouTube videos that go into greater details if you wish to research this topic more. https://youtu.be/fwCz8Ris79g
mikeytown2··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Best fireplace in terms of efficiency is a rocket mass heater. It burns the wood gas in a secondary burn chamber and then routes the exhaust through a lot of thermal mass. One 2 hour fire a day will usually heat 2000 sq feet of house. 3m video explains the concept; longer videos will better explain it https://youtu.be/fwCz8Ris79g
mikeytown2··on UCSF team has engineered a tiny antibody capable of neutralizing the coronavirus
could this be used for rapid testing? Even if it's not safe for in the body use it seems like there's other ways that this could be used.
mikeytown2··on Autofocus for the 16mm Telephoto Lens Mounted on the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera
Sony and Canon both have phase detection on the sensor. it's fairly accurate and would serve the same purpose as lidar, get really close to perfect focus so contrast detection af can bring it to perfect focus fairly quickly.

I've heard rumors that the mach number dial had a 4 on it; But the engine is rated to 3.6, anything past that would bottom out the inlet spikes and then you'd get an unstart.

mikeytown2··on Is there hope for IPv6?
If a major player like GitHub doesn't support ipv6 then ??? Also a lot of vps providers do ipv6 incorrectly so some form; vultr seems to be the only one I've found that does it well.

Yeah I’m curious about how this would work with a longer pin. I have one that’s over 6 and you need to press ok after punching in the pin; making it much harder to crack I’d imagine.
mikeytown2··on Why I’m quitting GMO research
Plants that are more resistant to herbicides/pesticides (weeds/bugs) due to GMO is my main gripe. Indoor growing and hydroponics is the best solution to this from my point of view. I have no problem with making food more nutrient-rich via GMO. I am well aware that all foods get sprayed, I'd be nice if none needed to be used and plants didn't get modified to make their own herbicides/pesticides.

I'll probably anger both side of the debate because I'm not 100% on one side or the other.

mikeytown2··on Ask HN: Should we change the way we do software interviews? What's stopping us?
I always ask them to read code and tell me what it does. 100% better than whiteboard coding because you can hear them working through it.

mikeytown2··on FCC report finds almost no broadband competition at 100Mbps speeds
Comcast recently upped my speed from 75/5 to 150/5. My downloads still top out around 40 on non speed testing sites. I’m looking for something else that has better upload speed; I started with 20/5 on Comcast and over the last 5 years the speed has been going up on paper. I have a 32/8 channel modem attached to a ubiquiti gateway on gigabit Ethernet, so the bottleneck is on the Comcast side. Advertised speeds only match reality for a select few sites that are used for speed testing from my experience.
mikeytown2··on SpaceX's Falcon Heavy center booster lacked ignition fluid to re-light engines
Titanium grid fins is a big reason they recovered the 2 side boosters. This launch and landing will be used to fine tune their simulation parameters.

The block 5 variant is designed for 10 launches in a row with 24hr turnaround. With service, over 100 launches is the goal.

mikeytown2··on Efficacy of elderberry extract for treatment of influenza a and B virus (2004)
Most research is funded by companies wanting to make money in the long run. This is the point I was trying to get across; thanks for letting me clarify this point :)
mikeytown2··on Efficacy of elderberry extract for treatment of influenza a and B virus (2004)
Not a drug so not a lot of money to be made long term. I’m really surprised this even got funding to be studied. Spend money marketing something that isn’t unique or patentable is usually a loosing game. For example if you pitched this on shark tank you’d have no investors because it’s not defendable.

mikeytown2··on Why Leaf Shutter Lenses Matter (2013)
All true points. The x100 is a fixed lens camera though. HSS flashes are fairly cheap these days; I have 3 Flashpoint ones (low cost Chinese), but I usually only need one. Nice thing is the same flash works (TTL & HSS) with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, and Panasonic. Leaf shutters are nice but the added cost is too high :/
mikeytown2··on A letter about Google AMP
So by not using AMP, Google search result pages will not display the lightning icon next to the link to your domain? Is this what you mean?
mikeytown2··on Why Leaf Shutter Lenses Matter (2013)
Surprised I don't see any comments about High Speed Sync. The tech behind pulsing the strobe to match the shutter is spot on these days. Most modern flashes have HSS which solves this issue, I don't see the need for a Leaf Shutter when your flashes support HSS.
mikeytown2··on A letter about Google AMP
I'll be giving a talk about what you can do to get your site to load faster without using AMP in Portland, Oregon on February 4th. https://pnwdrupalsummit.org/2018/sessions/how-get-perfect-10...

Long story short 100/100 with page speed is possible with most sites; further optimize for Speed Index by using rel="preload" for assets above the fold. What else am I missing?

mikeytown2··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket sets up at Cape Canaveral ahead of launch
I bet if Elon could turn back the clock he'd skip F9H and going straight to BFR. F9's Payload to LEO numbers have been going up; first design: 10,450 kg, current: 22,800 kg. On paper when Heavy was designed it was 25,000 kg to LEO.
