mikeocool··on You said no MCP
Except there already was "something" that the creators of MCP just ignored.

Imagine a world where you could:

* Configure your favorite harness/chat client with any OpenAPI spec for an API that supports Oauth2.

* The harness would walk you through the Oauth flow and securely store the token.

* And then insert some tools for discovering the API methods and making requests in to the context.

* The agent could then formulate a request, call the request tool, and the harness would 1) makes sure it's allowed to make a request to that API, and 2) insert the Auth Token into the request.

It would be basically exactly the same way MCP is setup today, except all you would need is an OpenAPI spec. You wouldn't have setup a server for a janky new standard that's half implemented slightly differently by every harness/chat client.

mikeocool··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
Pretty sure Apple must dedicate a product manager to coming up with new ways to break spaces in each OS release.
mikeocool··on Plan mode is dead
Why is “are you using the latest model?” the automatic response to any even mildly critical of LLM coding?

OP wasn’t even actually critical of LLMs, they were just saying that plan mode was helpful to stop the model from making incorrect assumptions when you want you don’t specify everything you should.

mikeocool··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
I'm not sure it's strictly red state/blue state. I've live in Massachusetts and Minnesota for a while, where they made it very easy to vote so that tracks.

However, now I live in New York, where they seem to go out of their way to make it difficult. The registration cutoff is several weeks before the election and for at least one election, I found myself wrongfully expunged from the voter roles.

I think it may just be how corrupt the state government is.

Seriously, once you realize you’re paying a minimum of 30% extra, it becomes hard to stomach.
mikeocool··on OpenAI is enlisting an influencer army to make it look 'good for the world'
Weird, I've seen countless instagram posts telling me the five prompts I need to have ChatGPT run my account and grow it to millions of followers.
mikeocool··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern (2022)
In my experience, the docs for something like setting up a dev env are typically greatly improved by the second person who sets up the dev env, not the personal who originally wrote the docs.

In that case, when the docs are not associated with a code change, you want to make getting those improvements into the docs as frictionless as possible, otherwise the changes aren't going to get made.

Personally, I've found that making docs updates incredibly fast + easy to be far more valuable than anything you get from forcing doc changes through the full SDLC process. If someone has feedback on your docs changes they would have shared in a review, they can just update the docs instead.

mikeocool··on OpenAI is enlisting an influencer army to make it look 'good for the world'
Why do they need real influencers? Don’t they own some of the world’s best AI models that are really good at generating content?
mikeocool··on Claude Opus 5.5
That's the load-bearing seam in this blog post.
mikeocool··on MCP was always a bad idea?
I think the point of those comments is this could have been much simpler for everyone if the model providers had given us some tools around existing standards.

Instead they invented something new/weird/complex standard, and then every client implemented slightly differently (and different parts of it).

mikeocool··on MCP was always a bad idea?
Yeah, from a design perspective MCP upsets me, because it’s a poorly designed standard and creating a good one could have been much easier.

But you’re right, since clients don’t have a nicely sandboxed “make api request” tool, it’s basically the way to go for a lot of use cases.

mikeocool··on MCP was always a bad idea?
All of these things are perfectly possible with a plain REST API with an Open API spec and using some standard auth options, and an AI client that implements a reasonable “make api request tool” (just like the AI clients implement MCP today).

I think the real value of MCP is that it allowed companies to say “we’re doing AI!” When they built an MCP server. Just saying “use our api” was a lot less exciting.

Giving it a different name probably also helped cut through politics at companies where non-technical people didn’t want to open up user data with an API, but they did want to do AI.

mikeocool··on HarnessTax: How Much Does the Harness Matter for Coding Agents?
I believe you can use your codex subscription with Pi, and it’s officially endorsed by OpenAI and uses your subscription usage.

Though for cc you are correct, using it with your sub draws from extra usage.

mikeocool··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
Neovim’s current donation page says that funds are managed by OpenCollective — a 501c6 organization in the US. 501c6’s are tax exempt.

So assuming they are the holders of the bitcoin as well, there would be no tax liability.

mikeocool··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
Previously having a deck was basically a signal that said “I took some time to prepare for this meeting and put together some coherent talking points” even if the deck itself was just a bunch of of text outlining what the speaker was saying.

Now that people are generating decks with AI, they’re basically worthless. I don’t need a bunch of bullet points you didn’t take anytime to think about on the screen while you talk about something you didn’t prepare for.

mikeocool··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
One person can build a $22 billion company (in year 2000 dollars) that sells an operating system used by 97% of personal computers, the world’s most popular office suite, along with a bunch of other software used by virtually every company in the world, and is on the verge of releasing a wildly popular gaming console system?

Do you have any examples of this?

mikeocool··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
JOSM is great when you get really into, but if it's really your first edit, just use the editor on openstreetmap.org.

If it's something you end up enjoying, one really satisfying thing to do is pick a small rural town and improve the map. With a few hours, it's not hard to make the OSM data more detailed and better than any other publicly available map.

mikeocool··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Given this feature seems to be premised off guessing a user’s age based on their inputs, and a common use case for Claude it uploading personal legal and tax documents to have Claude explain them to you, I am guessing Anthropic is not hurting for data about their customers.

Seems more likely this is designed to stave off similar laws /regulations to what the social media platforms are now being hit with, and moving liability from Anthropic to parents. If dad lets kid use his Claude account for a school project, and Claude ends up telling the kid to hurt himself, it’s now dad’s fault.

mikeocool··on Apple Watch Series 12
Have you never had a conversation someone you trust that you prefer there not be an automated written record of?
mikeocool··on Apple Watch Series 12
It also summarizes your full conversations.
mikeocool··on Apple Watch Series 12
People have plenty of conversations where if one party intentionally chose to record it, it would be big violation of trust.

This is basically just "always on" recording/transcribing that people have to intentionally remember to turn off, that's a pretty big difference.

mikeocool··on Apple Watch Series 12
Yeah, even more weird was when they highlighted the privacy aspect of it. Sure, it maintains the wearer's privacy, just not that of anyone around them.
mikeocool··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
> They're packing lots of signal into fewer words

“The load-bearing seam is real” or “Autumn hits different” appear to have absolutely no signal in them.

mikeocool··on State of the Map 2026
The President of the United Stated doesn’t actually have the authority to tell anyone besides the executive branch what to name geographic places. So the order only forces official US government maps created by USGS and the like to be updated. Other maps can choose to update if they want to.

Open Street Map tends to reserve the “name” tag for what things are commonly called by the local community. It appears that for the Lake Ontario and The Gulf of Mexico they’ve added an “official_name:US” tag to capture the names in the executive orders.

Kinda sounds like you are finally realizing the dream of XML and DTD envisioned 25 years ago.
mikeocool··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
Lots of standards are terrible without the actual tools on top of them (try making an HTTP request with just a network socket).

But that doesn’t mean we should have single centralized tool that does everything.

I’d posit there’s no big loss if you broke these things up and each had their own copy the repo (if needed):

- CI/CD

- issues

- code review/pull requests

- release artifact distribution

- discovery+social credit for open source

You could host your repo on any dumb storage somewhere that speaks git+ssh or git+https and each tool could pull from there.

mikeocool··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
> You need centralization (or at the very least, a standard) for that.

We have a standard! It’s this great decentralized VCS called git. For most of the stuff integrations do, they’re just showing code or commits — both of which are readily available in a copy of the repo.

Probably the one thing that’s missing is a standardized webhook system so that your git repo storage could tell integrations when stuff changes. Though even that isn’t strictly necessary if the integrations keep a copy of the repo up to date.

mikeocool··on Working with AI feels more like leadership than coding
There’s still a world difference between communicating with Claude and managing humans (well).

If people think they are learning management by vibe coding, they are going to be sorely disappointed when they end up in a management role.

mikeocool··on Working with AI feels more like leadership than coding
If it is like management, it’s like the most low effort version of management.

You just blindly tell it what to do without any regard for its motivations or morale. If it does something wrong, you just delete it and slightly rephrase your instructions and have it try again.
