mikeklaas··on Canada's top court has overturned all restrictions on prostitution
No, that is not an accurate reading of the situation.

Constitutionality in Canada is governed by the judges' interpretation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which is part of the constitution. In this case, the judges determined that the legislation was not simply 'unfair', but infringed on a group of people's fundamental rights.

mikeklaas··on The Most Misleading Measure of Response Time: Average
I like 90th percentile as the "one number" to choose. Mean is misleading, and median (50th percentile) is too low to capture what most of your users are experiencing.
mikeklaas··on How to Burst the "Filter Bubble" that Protects Us from Opposing Views
Cycling can never be the complete answer (weather, etc.), but there's no reason it can't be a big chunk of it (30% of all trips in the Netherlands). It's also cheap to build compared to mass transit

I agree that transit is ultimately the most important.

mikeklaas··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2013)
Zite - San Francisco, or Vancouver (Canada)

We're building a news recommender system that aims to read you mind. Machine Learning, NLP, you name it.

Right now we're mostly looking for a lead Web Developer and DevOps/System Admin, but our goal is to hire anyone smart who crosses our path.

mikeklaas··on In Almost Every European Country, Bikes Are Outselling New Cars
So… we actually took significant steps to solve a real problem and we solved it?

I'm not sure how this is an argument against climate change.

mikeklaas··on Formula 1′s Leading Team Has a Big Secret
Can you give a list of races won on a Moulton? It seems surprising, if true.
mikeklaas··on Is College Worth It?
Where can one look at that data?
mikeklaas··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2013)
Zite (http://zite.com) is a company with machine learning and data at its core: our goal is to use deep personalization technology to give people news they wouldn't be able to find any other way. We're looking for engineers eager to dig into big data, both on the scalability front and on relevance. We think that personalization technology should be used for more than optimizing your google queries—it should instead be at the core of a product (think Pandora).

mikeklaas··on 3.5% of Android phone clocks are wrong by more than an hour
This was an issue for our app. We went SSL-only for our API, which unfortunately fails with a cryptic error message if the clock is off. We eventually messages this to the user ("Sorry, Zite is broken, please reset your clock"), but there's no way to know how many users actually went and fixed it and returned to the app.

mikeklaas··on Lawmaker says biking bad for the environment
650W is far too high for the output of an average person for an hour ([3] shows this is almost 1 HP which should indicate how far it is off).

mikeklaas··on How A Pull Request Rocked My World
I have to disagree. "Jettison" does not fit the simile he was going for, at all.
mikeklaas··on A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Academia
Several of us Zite employees are also refugees from academia, it turns out.
mikeklaas··on Prismatic gets $15 million in Series A Funding
For those trying out the automatic start, I'd be curious to see how your experience compares with Zite's auto-twitter/google reader/fb startup, if you're willing to give it a shot.
mikeklaas··on Prismatic gets $15 million in Series A Funding
Congrats to Bradford & his team. Good to see some real competition for Zite for a change :)
mikeklaas··on Ask HN/PG: What causes this sudden drop-off behaviour on HN submissions?
> I'm not defending his disapproval of PG's response.

Whenever you see a sentence like this on an online forum, you know the conversation has gone off the rails.

mikeklaas··on Peter Molyneux’s staff work 36 hours non-stop
When we launched Zite, I (along with several other engineers), were awake for about the same amount of time keeping the servers alive.

Sometimes a heroic emergency effort is required. As long as it is (extraordinarily) rare, it's not in itself sign of a dysfunctional organization.

mikeklaas··on Hidden Gem of iOS6: File Uploads in Mobile Safari
Yeah, the shipped the best and most performant mobile browser for years, but omitted one small feature that no-one has implemented well for nefarious purposes.
mikeklaas··on Chrome 22 breaks things
I don't. Anonymous title editing by mods (with no note that that's what happened) is probably the worst thing about HN.

mikeklaas··on Apple Wins Patent Ruling As Jury Finds Samsung Infringes

mikeklaas··on Square's culture: "That makes us look really bad."
It wasn't sufficiently Helvetica.
mikeklaas··on The Making of Warcraft 1: Origin of the series & creation of multi-unit select
What? DnD was the dominant force in 90's computer rpgs (BG/BG2/IWD/IWD2/Planescape Torment), and continued into the aughts with NWN/KOTOR/KOTOR2. There are several candidates for greatest rpg of all time on that list.

Star Wars has had its share of filler games, but also produced many truly great games. X-Wing/Tie Fighter were huge, and Dark Forces/Jedi Knight were pretty important in the early fps days. I've already mentioned KOTOR.

mikeklaas··on The total price of the Digg acquisition was around $16 million
Still reported as 500k for the domain name, code, and traffic, which seems crazy low.

mikeklaas··on The War On RSS
Not to overly self-promote, but you might want to give us a try: http://zite.com . I've personally spent years on the personalization technology behind it, so I'd love to hear what you think.
