mikeklaas··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
A modern game engine that can play the Classic Fallout 1/2 games on modern systems (including mac, linux, iOS, Android). Hoping to bring these games to a wider audience.

mikeklaas··on On being tired
> Most weekends rather than recharging for the rest of the week, I end up more tired than I started.

As a parent, it's hard to remember that ending a weekend "recharged" is a common experience.

mikeklaas··on Things to know about databases
There are projects that use LSMTs as the storage engine for RDBMS' (like RocksDB); I'm not sure it's accurate to say "they can't be use as an RDMBS".
mikeklaas··on Oauth2 support for GMail
Development apps are exempt from the requirement. (They are also limited to 100 accounts)
mikeklaas··on Single dependency stacks
Multiple databases in postgres fundamentally share the same underlying infrastructure (i.e., WAL), and so do not offer much in terms of scalability or blast-radius protection compared to putting all tables in the same database.
mikeklaas··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
I'm surprised to see the Portal listed. We have one for letting the grandparents talk to the kids, and it is the most unreliable piece of technology I've owned. Constant connection issues and laggy UI.
mikeklaas··on Never update anything
whoa, do you have a link?
mikeklaas··on When “Foundation” Gets the Blockbuster Treatment, Asimov’s Vision Gets Lost
That's probably the worst book in the series.
mikeklaas··on A read query can write to disk: a Postgres story
> And it can't be adjusted on the fly, per query.

Sure it can:

   SET LOCAL work_mem = '256MB';
   SELECT * FROM …
mikeklaas··on Roblox has been down for days and it’s not because of Chipotle
I find it pretty odd to speculate that they are experiencing a very specific failure mode of a particular database. Do you even know whether they use Postgres?
mikeklaas··on 1 Year of Coinbase as a mission focused company
Do you have a source for that?
mikeklaas··on Samoa Scraps Daylight Saving Time
The "good reason" is that considering 12am the "middle of the day" only makes sense if the typical sleeping window was 8pm to 4am (making midnight the "middle of the night").
mikeklaas··on Zero-downtime schema migrations in Postgres using views
Adding a NULL constraint isn't zero downtime since PG scans the whole table ensuring that the constraint is not violated.
mikeklaas··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
Perhaps I misinterpreted this part?

> I struggle to consider using it as a data store these days as well with other options on the table.

It sounds like you wouldn't use it for any purposes.

mikeklaas··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
What would you use redis for, if anything?
mikeklaas··on Logical replication and decoding for Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL
You can do something like:

   CREATE TABLE xx AS SELECT * FROM EXTERNAL_QUERY('postgres.db', 'SELECT * FROM my_table'));
mikeklaas··on Half a million lines of Go
You can catch and recover from panic()'s in go, too.
mikeklaas··on Asking rents in San Francisco continue to slip, but…
It's sensible in San Francisco because having an active renter makes a property worth significantly less.

Why? You basically cannot kick evict a renter or raise their rent.

mikeklaas··on School custodian refuses to download app that monitors location, got her fired
This is partially due to liability: if someone slips on a wet spill and hurts themselves, Whole Foods is liable if they haven't been taking reasonable measures to clean up such spills in a timely fashion (1/hour). Scanning is a way to later prove that such cleaning was happening.

Is it not the same thing as ubiquitous foam board insulation? https://www.homedepot.com/b/Building-Materials-Insulation-Fo...
mikeklaas··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
Good thought, but that might incentivize not replacing worn tires
mikeklaas··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
I replaced the battery in my 2013 about 11 months ago, FWIW.
mikeklaas··on Hard to discover tips and apps for macOS
It's the key beside "1", namely "`"
mikeklaas··on Air pollution is worse than we thought
Charging at night isn't great for using solar power without storage. Ideally, we'd incentivize people to use their car's battery to store excess solar power during the day and smooth out the duck curve (perhaps slowly recharging again at night)
mikeklaas··on Fire your bad customers
Unless the friend is only buying Amazon-branded products, the merchant is being screwed
mikeklaas··on Just Too Efficient
For a much grimmer and soul-wrenching take on this, read Meditations on Moloch by Scott Alexander:

mikeklaas··on Covid-19 Superspreader Events in 28 Countries: Critical Patterns and Lessons
You have the terminology backwards. Coronavirus is not (epidemiologically) airborne, but it can be aerosolized and transmit through the air.
mikeklaas··on Ask HN: Who is hiring right now?
Remote is a possibility, depending on timezone.
