mikejarema··on Stable release of Flynn – open-source container deployment
Got it, makes complete sense. Thanks for the direct answer.

A bit more info on the app I'm thinking of testing with Flynn: each instance has a single dedicated resource (actually a psuedo terminal sitting on top of a command line tool). Any given instance is incapable of handling requests concurrently, they queue up at the instance. So the app's concurrency model relies on smart load balancing at the router itself. I've got HAProxy playing this role, but have done a bit of a hack job juggling the containers which implement the various microservices.

I'll give Flynn a go to see if the simplicity it gives me in managing my deployment is worth the routing tradeoff for now, but I would definitely love to see Flynn's router adapted as you describe.

mikejarema··on Stable release of Flynn – open-source container deployment
Congrats on the release, looks like a great platform for my use case (an app with a series of microservices, each of which needs to scale independently and for which requests are usually long running).

I do have a question re: Flynn's router. The router README [1] states that it uses a random load balancing algorithm. I worry that at scale it would exhibit issues similar to what Heroku's "routing mesh" has (had?) as explained in [2], namely that some nodes would sit idle while others simultaneously let requests build up in their queue, hurting overall latency and reducing the marginal value of each additional node.

Any chance of something like HAProxy's leastconn algorithm landing in Flynn's router to mitigate this type of worry?

mikejarema··on How we cracked millions of Ashley Madison passwords
Likewise, I'm very happy with this exact setup after coming from a mix of memorized password and site-dependent password-generation schemes.

I'm on Mac and found KeePassX to be a better solution than the original KeePass, it's much lighter weight. My only hope is that KeePassX gets browser integration at some point via keepasshttp - https://www.keepassx.org/dev/issues/91

FWIW, I saw this fund after reading about their first investment [1], I thought the fund itself was noteworthy in its quick turnaround on funding decisions.

mikejarema··on Rule 30 for cellular automata
Anyone familiar with a site that'll let you generate/view rule 30 (or similar automata) to some high number of rows? Perhaps in a zoomable, Google Maps-style? My google-fu has failed me in this thus far, but it seems like something that ought to be out there.

mikejarema··on Teehan+Lax joins Facebook
I hope they keep http://labs.teehanlax.com/ up and running, so really awesome projects and cases studies there. It'd be a shame for that to ultimately be pulled down.

I don't think archive.org would be enough to keep it intact and useable. Are there any other archiving services built for JS-heavy web sites?

mikejarema··on Introducing Libscore: A PageRank for JavaScript Libraries
I've been using the http://www.ruby-toolbox.com popularity score as a similar type of proxy to usefulness, reliability and desirability for ruby gems.

It attempts to sum up how widely used and active a particular gem is. Plus the site categorizes gems, so when looking for a solution to a new problem you don't have particular expertise in, you can see at a glance which gems may not only help you out, but also those you can trust will be maintained for awhile.

mikejarema··on The No CAPTCHA problem
I think a good chunk of the images are captured by way of Google's Streetview vehicles [1]. I'm seeing blurry images of house and apartment numbers all the time. So I'd imagine there are always new images popping up that Google can feed into the recaptcha system that haven't been seen before.

mikejarema··on Show HN: DayJot – Another open-source alternative to OhLife
Just curious more than anything - what's the rationale for going with the GPL? Is it because you both open sourced the app and run it as a hosted service? (not quite sure how it helps this scenario, but again, curious)
mikejarema··on Face++: API for face detection – also detects gender, age, pose
Also of note is clmtracker: https://github.com/auduno/clmtrackr

Its open source (MIT license I believe) and performs some of the same functions as Face++ like detection, "landmarking" and replacing features/mapping a mask to your face. It includes some fun demos as well.

mikejarema··on Show HN: Tech stories with lots of conversation in past 24 hours
This is reminiscent of what Engage.io was trying to do with its popular conversations feature before it shut down. I like the fact it focuses on tech conversations rather than conversations in general, there's so much more value to me in pre-filtering the content to a vertical I'm interested rather than trying to be everything for everyone. Great job, it's immediately engaging.

I'm the dev behind Namevine. It makes a little bit of side income for me via affiliate revenue. That initial popup is an attempt to help me prioritize which affiliate integrations to pursue next and of course helps ensure users are sent to register at a registrar they'd likely purchase at.

mikejarema··on Dear Instagram
Me too, so what is best practice?

I put together a simple layout for my company's blog and made this link very explicit specific, see: http://blog.vidoyen.com

Is that more in line with a blog reader would generally expect? I'm genuinely curious, because I've seen variants of this comment time and time again on HN.

mikejarema··on Domain name search with regular expressions and curated sets
Makes sense, thanks for the response, I really like the tool.

I think one area where Namegrep would benefit is to offer a few more examples to try out. As a "hacker" myself I immediately understand the power of the tool, but still want to see a few more interesting regexps that actually yield some worthwhile domains.

That and inserting a subtle horizontal divider in the result search everytime I press the search button (while in regexp mode). That way, at a glance I can see where my previous query ended and my new one began.

Awesome work!

mikejarema··on Domain name search with regular expressions and curated sets
Got a few downvotes, is this not a relevant concern?

Perhaps due to listing my similar tool (removed from above comment).

mikejarema··on Domain name search with regular expressions and curated sets
Who's behind this anyways?

I'm genuinely curious because (1) it doesn't seem to be presented in their FAQ nor on-site and (2) the WHOIS info for namegrep.com is private.

While this isn't a huge red flag, it is a little suspicious that I could be handing over my branding strategies (if one could call regexps "strategies) to some unknown 3rd party.

(FWIW, I built a similar tool, but I don't go to any lengths to hide my involvement)

EDIT: removed link to my similar tool, wasn't intending to hijack any clicks, but rather get the discussion going on whether its important to you as a user of this tool to know who you're dealing with

mikejarema··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
I'd like a way to skim through videos. Playing at 2x or 4x doesn't really do the trick.

For contrast, if I'm skimming through an article, I can quickly scan for keywords, look for paragraph breaks & sentence breaks to get the gist of what a particular section of the text is describing.

How can I skim a video the same way? I'm more interested in a solution for a 30 or 60 minute recorded lecture or conference keynote than something that let's me skim a music video or blockbuster movie. So the solution here may be more suited to one form of video than another.

https://skimo.tv/ seems to be trying to hit the mark, but from what I've seen, they've got a long way to go. And I'm not 100% sure that pulling a few short video segments out of a long video is the solution.

mikejarema··on A magic square filled with consecutive primes
I don't believe the article defines a magic square (nor was I aware). A magic square is a n by n grid of numbers where each individual row, column, and diagonal add up to the same value.

mikejarema··on Stop making me sign up
Great example of try first, signup later that I coincidentally just discovered is Litmus' email rendering preview system - https://litmus.com/email-testing

They go quite far with it, which was really nice for my specific use case, allowing me to share the results with my team before proceeding with registration.

Now it begs the question whether or not I'll come back later to signup for the service, but regardless they've left a fantastic impression on me as a potential future user.
