mikecoles··on Cisco to acquire Isovalent
Not sure about 30 years ago, but for the last 20 Cisco has been the same. Mostly reliable hardware, but the software side sucks, the licensing and support fees are ridiculous, licensing without a direct connection to their cloud (or a satellite server) is a pain in the arse, sales doesn't even try to be realistic with product capability to product need match, and support is barely above worthless, even with a high-touch contact. Cisco is the same company today as they were back with Ciscoworks and MARS Protego.
mikecoles··on Ukraine forced to cut military operations as foreign aid dries up
Dumb idea to refuse to waste more money because you have other debts.

Ukraine is a garbage fire at best, pork barrel at worst. It's not close to a worthwhile investment.

mikecoles··on Shoplifting and frustrated customers plague self-checkout
No problems would be eliminated. Ditch Amazon whenever possible to reduce problems.

Local, independent stores that are physically visited are the better option.

mikecoles··on Shoplifting and frustrated customers plague self-checkout
No slower than standard checkout. Most often, self-checkout is much faster.
mikecoles··on Pythagorean Theorem Found on Clay Tablet 1000 Years Older Than Pythagoras
Well played.
mikecoles··on "I just bought a 2024 Chevy Tahoe for $1"
Was it FL that allowed for price negotiation via values placed in HTML forms? This was decades ago. Websites would send the $-values of products via html elements that the frontend designer wasn't expecting to be modified before the order was sent back from the client. The order system read the values back in and calculated the amount owed using these manipulated values. The naive, fun days of the adolescent web.
mikecoles··on Microsoft defends Edge's predatory practices with cringe, audacious reply on X
Windows is the most frustrating software to deal with in regard to anything. Want a dumb browser for Fac ebook, Youtube, and Google? Get a Chromebook. There is not Windows excels at that a user would want.
mikecoles··on FTC investigating Adobe over making it too hard to cancel subscriptions
Did Adobe hire AOL's Chief Retention Officer?
mikecoles··on AMD's Next GPU Is a 3D-Integrated Superchip
I wish I could buy ML cards with Monopoly money.
mikecoles··on BingChat is providing misinformation about elections, can they fix it?
LLMs, so far, are just there to count patterns and regurgitate the patterns. They're not a judge of content, thankfully.

As for lack of accuracy, which news organization has been unbiased in their reporting? None.

mikecoles··on Sans 2023 Holiday Hack Challenge
Is this the first year you have to sign up with vendors to complete the tasks?
mikecoles··on Google is finally saying goodbye to Google Play Movies and TV
Reorganizing for anti-trust negotiations?
mikecoles··on QR codes are for suckers – it's time to break them for good
A paper menu.
mikecoles··on Elon Musk "prepared to go to prison" if U.S. government tries to censor X
Musk and his businesses are a positive force in the world. Popularizing electric vehicles, making space launches more efficient, and providing an open platform are great benefits.
mikecoles··on President Biden Announces Billions to Deliver World-Class High-Speed Rail
"cars are bumpy trains are smooth "

Your delusions never cease to amaze.

mikecoles··on President Biden Announces Billions to Deliver World-Class High-Speed Rail
Mind the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves.

Stop wasting the money of other people. Rail sucks. Leave it for cargo.

mikecoles··on Chinese garlic is a national security risk, says US senator
Guessing the mega-recalls of lettuce during the past few years were forgotten:

"In any case, there is no problem with this," an article published by the university in 2017 says.

"Human waste is as effective a fertilizer as is animal waste. Spreading human sewage on fields that grow crops doesn't sound appealing, but it is safer than you might think."

mikecoles··on Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank
Keep an eye out for the Kentucky Jam the next time you're in the supermarket.
mikecoles··on Steve Jobs Signed 'Apple Computer Company' Check to RadioShack
I'd be in for a check to Radio shack signed by Woz.
mikecoles··on Facebook Kills PGP-Encrypted Emails
Stat of a single person. I found a personal blog with a typo in the commands for one of the tutorials on the site. I found the blog owner's email and it had a pgp key on the keyservers. We chatted, securely, without ever having met before. It was quite a pleasant experience.
mikecoles··on 25M homes will lose broadband discounts if Congress keeps stalling, FCC warns
The difference between accessibility and affordability is large.
mikecoles··on 25M homes will lose broadband discounts if Congress keeps stalling, FCC warns
Starlink performs amazingly well in its use-case.
mikecoles··on Who Killed JFK? After 60 Years and New Clues, the Truth Looks Different
The crazier conspiracy, for me, is the MLK assassination. Wedigoon made a video about the odd occurrences.

mikecoles··on Ask HN: Best bang for the buck router setup for apartment
Separate your router from your APs. ER605 is about 60 USD. Handles multiple uplinks as well. If you're not interested in the nuts and bolts of networking, get an Omada class AP from TP-Link and use the Omada software to configure everything.

For planning, get a 'wifi analyzer' type app on your phone. Are 2.4GHz channels jam packed? If so, 5GHz might be a better option to optimize for, if you don't have legacy 2.4-only devices.

mikecoles··on Leaving F-Droid
Trouble travels in packs.
mikecoles··on Why we’re dropping Basecamp
Hardly 'best' when they're up to these antics.
mikecoles··on Why is AI so cringe?
Overhyped. Solution looking for a problem.

There are applications for AI/ML, but they're "boring" so marketing gets cranked up to make it sound like AI can do all the things.

mikecoles··on Biden Administration to Require Replacing of Lead Pipes Within 10 Years
Go back and re-read the prior comment. Then think about it.

You'll then understand that fixing things, currently or in the near future, it will be the current leadership that has much of the blame or applaud coming to them.

mikecoles··on Biden Administration to Require Replacing of Lead Pipes Within 10 Years
There's enough left-wingnut commentary in your single post to not be disappointed.

You are so blinded by jealousy that you missed the point on the prior comment.

mikecoles··on How Meta Is Planning for Elections in 2024
You have zero room to speak on the topic of being brainwashed.
