miesman··on 'Calling bullshit': the college class on how not to be duped by the news

miesman··on How to *securely* use SMS two-factor authentication (2FA)
Submitted this because although some sites like Vangard allow you to used a security key like SecurID or Yubico FIDO they still require you to have SMS security codes enabled incase you don't have your key. This makes invalidates any additional security keys have over SMS on your account. Would be very interested in HN community's thoughts on this.

miesman··on Ask HN: How do you read the news without getting depressed?
I stopped reading/watching the news in the late 90s. I started by not reading the news for a day to see if there was anything important I was missing. Then a week and then a month. I pretty much realized anything important would filter though. For example I found out about 9/11 the morning it happened because it was in a huge font on yahoo's homepage (this was before they had news on the front page). For me I've decided I'm much better off. I'm not wasting a bunch of time on things I can't do anything about.
miesman··on Doctor tells patient he doesn't have long to live through video screen
I was training as a paramedic in a hospital. A doctor needed to give this kind of news to a family. He took me aside and told me to come in the room 3 minutes after he went in and say that he was needed elsewhere. Apparently this was used quite often and the staff there called it a "save". Dealing with this sort of thing day after day the staff becomes numb to a lot of things.

Later in the week I was with someone who knew she was gonna die soon. I was talking to her and was trying to be with her. It was very difficult and I could feel part of myself slipping elsewhere. I was messed up the rest of the day. My preceptor had come into the room and left quickly, he didn't want to go there.

Anyway it does go both ways. Hospital staff need to do things to protect themselves so they can keep functioning. Ideally someone needs to be empathetic but they are also human. I don't feel delivering this sort of news via a video screen is appropriate though.

miesman··on What was the nicest codebase you've inherited without the original author(s)?
Unix V7 which I worked on porting. Some say it was the last Unix kernel that one person could completely understand.
miesman··on What you need to know before you join a startup
Ask for and actually read the company stock agreement line by line before agreeing to join. The article does not mention clawback which is another thing to look for:

miesman··on Ask HN: How Would You or Did Convince Your Boss That You Can Work Remote?
While it's a gamble, one way that worked for me 2 years ago: Work extremely hard and dazzle them for 6 months. Make sure that you are extremely critical to the project you are on. Give notice and let them offer. I didn't plan it out when I joined but I needed to move out of the area because of elder care issues. I was hoping they would offer but wasn't counting on it. It worked out well for me and the company.
miesman··on Ask HN: Top three questions for a startup before accepting a job offer?
Is there a clawback provision in the stock option agreement?
miesman··on Ask HN: Is there a modern “power on to basic” computer, for kids to learn on?
I started with Cosmac ELF 1802 with 256 bytes of memory 128x64 graphics. I would have thought I'd died and gone to heaven if I had something that ran pico-8.

miesman··on Review of 1984 by Isaac Asimov (1980)
He did a amazing job of picking apart the novel but he missed the forest for the trees.
miesman··on Amazon's Bezos Launches $2B Fund to Help the Homeless
Reminds me of how Pablo Escobar gave money to the poor in Medellín. Not implying Bezos is a narcoterrorist but the goals seem similar to me.
miesman··on Ask HN: How to become a remote contractor?
I 55 and have worked remote many times during my career (including currently). The best way I've found is to work onsite initially and dazzle them. Then when the contract is up tell them you are willing to continue remote.
miesman··on Things I Learned from a Job Hunt for a Senior Engineering Role
I'm over 50 (55) like the author of the article. As it is often said over and over again, the best way to find a job/gig is networking. That's how I found my current job. Having people on the inside pulling for you cuts though the BS. It took about a week for me last time.

"... But one source was Kahn. Strangelove’s rhapsodic monologue about preserving specimens of the race in deep mineshafts is an only slightly parodic version of Kahn. There were so many lines from “On Thermonuclear War” in the movie, in fact, that Kahn complained that he should get royalties. (“It doesn’t work that way,” Kubrick told him.)"

miesman··on Show HN: Public Datasets for Machine Learning
Enron_Corpus - Not a clean dataset for training but a unique resource.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enron_Corpus

"The corpus is unique in that it is one of the only publicly available mass collections of real emails easily available for study, as such collections are typically bound by numerous privacy and legal restrictions which render them prohibitively difficult to access"

miesman··on “Let her speak please”
I'm sure the moderator wasn't even remotely conscious of what he was doing because this is so endemic in our society. The only way this will change is for more people to speak up like this.
miesman··on 2038: Only 21 years away

miesman··on Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber
After 35 years working as an engineer one of the main things I've learned is that HR is there to protect the company from its employees. Sorry if that sounds cynical but it really is the bottom line. Even still, the fact that HR was unable to step in and even mitigate the destructive behavior (let alone doing the right thing) really speaks to the culture and ineptness of Uber's HR.
miesman··on Show HN: Killing Procrastination by Making Everything Fit
Nice webapp and UI. (to the author) To state the obvious.. You'll see a lot more people adopt it and stick with it if you layout your vision in a few page tutorial.

miesman··on Why It Doesn't Pay to Be a People Pleaser
"white lies and false smiles quickly snowball into a life lived out of alignment"

True story - My dental hygienist is annoying. She complains about her life while she was cleaning my teeth. She only works Wed and so when I rescheduled this time I said I was booked on Wed so I need someone else.

So I told a white lie to protect her feelings. Like it or not we are social creatures. Some people don't have the iron ego of the original author and can be hurt by "honest" remarks. Yes I get that it offends certain peoples sensibilities but it costs nothing to be nice to people.

miesman··on Ask HN: Insider history of the demise of Kodak?
I worked for a subsidiary of Kodak around 91' and can offer a small view. My impression was that they were very aware of what was coming. They came out with the PhotoCD during this time. If you look at it was really a way to lock people into film for a longer time since you still needed to take your negatives in to be transferred.

I also remember taking a photography class in 95 and having the teacher say right at the beginning that in 10 years everything is going to be digital. My impression of the time is that everyone knew what was coming.

miesman··on Ask HN: When should you quit?
I'm 53 and have been working as a programmer since I was 17. I still love what I do but I've been where you are at several times. I'll tell you something you probably already know - it's impossible to make a good decision where you are at right now. For what it's worth I'd suggest taking a break and then deciding what to do once you have some distance and have shaken some of this off.
