miesman··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Atomic Accidents By James Maheffey. Witty author who worked in the field. Extremely entertaining highly recommended.

“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” Surprised I didn’t find this quote from Hunter S Thompson in the comments yet.

Was at an event he was at CSUN ~1978. We were in the parking lot coming in and he was just coming out. He stopped and talked to us for a while. Super nice guy. My impression is he is exactly the same as he is on the air all the time.
miesman··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
V7 Unix Kernel. By far the cleanest most concise code I’ve had had the privilege to work with. Really laid the groundwork for what came after particularly BSD4.3 and beyond.

miesman··on What Is WebTV?
No, not at all. His job was just to fix crashes. He would go through the logs and they just all happened mostly be porn sites. We used to joke that his job was to visit porn sites, but it was among a small group of developers. I wasn’t even sure of his direct manager was aware. But he was in fact being paid by Microsoft to visit porn sites :-)
miesman··on What Is WebTV?
Not that I’m aware of. It was a nice code base, but all very custom. Even the network stack was custom. I would think companies could get a lot more adopting all the open stuff available now.

It did have a life for several years after I left in MSNTV. Maybe someone else here knows its fate.

miesman··on What Is WebTV?
I worked at WebTV after it was acquired by Microsoft. My officemate was a dev that fixed browser crashes on the box. 90% of them were for porn sites. Which meant that he was paid by Microsoft to visit porn sites all day

My favorite was Taco Bell putting a 10’ x 10’ box off the coast of Australia and running an ad saying if Skylab hits it, everyone in the US gets a free taco.
miesman··on Ask HN: Aging and learning. Does it become more difficult?
Pick things you’re passionate about.
miesman··on No Dislikes has officially ruined YouTube for me
Partial workaround for not having dislikes is to divide the number of views into the likes. 1% is ok, 2% is good, >=3% is a must see.
miesman··on Joan Didion: On Self-Respect (1961)
Another short thing she wrote about living that I really like:

“ I’m not telling you to make the world better, because I don’t think that progress is necessarily part of the package,” she once wrote. “I’m just telling you to live in it. Not just to endure it, not just to suffer it, not just to pass through it, but to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances. To make your own work and take pride in it. To seize the moment. And if you ask me why you should bother to do that, I could tell you that the grave’s a fine and private place, but none I think do there embrace. Nor do they sing there, or write, or argue, or see the tidal bore on the Amazon, or touch their children. And that’s what there is to do and get it while you can and good luck at it” — Joan Didion

miesman··on Stop Watching the News (2019)
I made this change 20 years ago and it improved the quality of my life. I’d suggest for someone to try it and see for themselves. Start with skipping one day then a few days then try to go for a week. See how you feel for yourself and then decide if you want to continue.

miesman··on Ask HN: What mistakes did you make when starting as a consultant/freelancer?
Starting work before I had a written purchase order in hand (or at least a verbal purchase order number with the promise of getting me the written purchase order soon). if you’re working before you get the purchase order there’s no need for them to actually make this a priority. It always eventually turns into a problem. Also having a purchase order shows that everyone in the company is on the same page (between engineering and the finance department).
miesman··on Cheap and powerful 'meth 2.0' is ravaging communities
I had a friend I grew up with who smoked his life away over a period of a few years. It was really ugly. Funny thing was he was the only one in our group of friends that didn't party that much when we were younger. They say an addict has his drug of choice but maybe the drug really chooses you.

It really is a super drug. The Methyl group allows it to cross the blood/brain barrier. Few hits and you are up for days. When it gets ahold of your life people do things like give up their kids to pursue it. You all have heard the stories.

Anyway I'm thinking that you wanting to try meth could be a red flag. Or not. But why take the chance?

miesman··on I Grew Up Gifted, but My Life Didn’t Turn Out the Way I Expected
I still remember my 8th grade history teachers response when I told him I was gifted: "Well you haven't done anything gifted in here."

Which is really the main point. Ones circumstances aside, I strongly believe you can achieve what you set your mind to. I've been able to achieve everything I've truly wanted to achieve in my life so far.

I suspect the author of the article wanted to be a mother, married and to work with children. It looks like she achieved these things.
