mieses··on Spray-foam insulation makes homes unable to be mortgaged
What is the recourse when the Swiss government endorses open source, a company deploys open source SprayFOAM or whatever, SprayFOAM fails catastrophically, and causes the company to go out of business? Perhaps they might fund the BBFA - the Bureau of Bureaucratic Failure Analysis?
mieses··on Susan Wojcicki has died
the pharmocracy will allow a cure for cancer?
mieses··on What I Saw in the Darién Gap
Michael Yon has been down there for about 2 years (?). Before that he was in HK and in Iraq. His reporting doesn't have a pro-globalist bias.
mieses··on The first 10k games at bgammon.org, an open source online backgammon service
bgammon.org register and login pages do not allow copy/pasting of usernames and passwords. i'd love to play but that's kind of annoying.

I actually like the floating fortune cookies but they seem timid, as though you were unsure about keeping them so you made them faint and small almost to the point of almost erasing them. Maybe a single more visible polygon would communicate meaning better than several faded ones. Looks nice overall.
mieses··on Rheinmetall and Anduril join forces to develop C-sUAS system
you are defining an out-group (those who wage war and violence) and creating a justification for potential violence against them. comparing them to animals.. it's obvious where that's going. this is what humans do. sharp sticks are a pretty great innovation whether you use them for skewering lamb or killing bad guys.
mieses··on Remote Amazon tribe connects to internet – wind up hooked on porn, social media
razing their jungle to eliminate snakes and other dangers would also save lives. throw in some chain link fences for good measure. they'll be posting on HN in no time.

mieses··on A Woman Who Left Society to Live with Bears Weighs in on "Man or Bear"
bonobos, bears and chimpanzees have children.
mieses··on Signal's Meredith Whittaker on the Telegram security clash
lots of words and nothing substantial about encryption or anything else.
mieses··on 44% Unicorn Startups in the US were founded by foreign workers
These topics should not be spoken by engineers whether they be Norwegian or Jewish. Norwegians and Jews both good. Engineers dangerous.

edit to add summary: develop engineers at home. it's not difficult. just do homework. import best scientific minds to win the long game.

mieses··on Namecheap Disrupting Itself with Spaceship
Spaceship does not plan to implement Dynamic DNS or an API, some of the best features of Namecheap.
mieses··on Ask HN: Should I try to manufacture toasters?
You could move to Argentina. If Milei survives you might be able to start a business there.

edit: or approach this as DIY kit where you are not selling the toaster but the components as separate items and a set of instructions. less regulations and better repairability.

mieses··on Bertrand Russell: Why I Am Not a Christian (1927)
Ayaan Hirsi Ali references Russel's lecture in her article "Why I am now a Christian" published 3 days ago. Maybe it's just a coincidence. I appreciate that she is living and reasoning in the present.

mieses··on Atrocity propaganda
disgusting post
mieses··on Gnome Foundation Hires "Professional Shaman" as New Executive Director
A witch doctor couldn't make printer installation any worse. This is worth a try.
mieses··on VirtualBox 7.0.12
I tried to run Win XP on UTM on MacOS x64 about a year ago. it worked but it was many, many, (1000x) times slower than virtualbox or parallels. I didn't want to dig into it after wasting 2 hours. internet comments indicated that UTM is slower but hid the truth of how much slower it is. UTM doesn't work.
mieses··on SpaceX Blast Left Officials in Disbelief over Environmental Damage
ooooh look. a fire not set by environmentalist activists from academia!
mieses··on Statement on AP Psychology and Florida
Why not let them try this experiment? What if it results in better mental health outcomes in Florida?
mieses··on Ask HN: Anyone using proportional fonts for coding?
fonts? real programmers use paper and pencil
mieses··on Why South Africa Is on the Brink of Chaos
Long live President Xi! -Uncle Roger
mieses··on Why South Africa Is on the Brink of Chaos
And unlike weather forecasting, communism ending in failure is a 100% certainty. Yet communists somehow are able to take the moral high ground. We have advanced well beyond the middle ages where it was reasonable to hold intellectual and political elites to moral standards.
mieses··on An open source web-based flashcard studying system
Could a teacher use Scholarsome to share flashcards with a group and track activity? It looks like some sharing features are already in place. Teachers use quizlet to assign both classwork and homework. Anki is designed for individual use and the sharing plugins are too complex and too limited for most teachers.
mieses··on The Illusion of Moral Decline
Low birth rates seem to affect any group that adopts cell phones, including the non-high-comfort impoverished nations of the southern hemisphere. The only exceptions seem to be the communities of faith like Israel. Unlikely that this trend will be reversed so the problem solves itself over the next few generations.

I would argue this is a good thing.

mieses··on With all social media fucking up severely, what's next?
You can trust 1+1=2 and that's about it.
mieses··on Is it OK to recline your airplane seat? Some travel experts say no
At least the button on the seat works, unlike usb-c and thunderbolt hubs. Lots of amusement if ever software engineers get control of that button.
mieses··on The Language of Democracy
Men perpetrate the violence. Women often talk them into it.
mieses··on The Enigma of Peter Thiel
Plato ranks democracy only above tyranny in his 5 forms of government.
mieses··on Apple Silicon is an inconvenient truth
and his kindergarten markup language wastes so much human and machine energy it could be measurable contributor to global CO2.
mieses··on A 1968 massacre in Vietnam
Consider that their success in warfare may be attributed to the fact that, in their culture, subversives like yourself are dealt with. In the end, they are better fighters.
