Opus 5.5 is SI
mieses··on Remember Hong Kong
I don't like almonds and AI word-salads very much. Walnuts are yummy.
mieses··on OpenAI’s Navier-Stokes release included a Lean 4 formal proof
who cares about plagiarism? the biggest issue, as described by Terence Tao, is that AI companies don't understand the math they are publishing and do not devote any resources to answering questions about their methods after publishing results and getting a headline. they miss the whole point of mathematics. they do not contribute to the improvement of human understanding of math, perhaps because they are unable to.
mieses··on Xcancel and Nitter have been taken down
what about throwing stones in glass houses now?
mieses··on "Sabotage": Experts, lawmakers blast RFK Jr. for destroying healthcare research
Which of the 2 totally different beasts are the "Public-Private Partnerships" like Fauci NIH funded, to give one example?

It's definitely true that public research is underfunded. It would also need better leadership for more funding to matter.

Who cares about people that trust research because it has "public" or "private" label?

mieses··on "Sabotage": Experts, lawmakers blast RFK Jr. for destroying healthcare research
we'll never know
mieses··on Croc: Securely transfer files and folders between two computers
croc is great. been using it for unimportant transfers for years. If you want to donate money then start with syncthing which is decentralized and even more useful. could syncthing add croc-like command that was as simple and quick?
mieses··on "Stop Cutting Down Flock Cameras " (Mass Surveillance Is Good) [video]
he seems consistent. did you like him in any of his iterations? probably not. so he consistently has value.

mackenzie scott should send this guy a few million for the public good.
mieses··on Al Vigier: Canada's AI strategy shouldn't include secret Palantir bills
Canada should make some rules to fix the lack of investment. If Canadians were not allowed to invest in American companies the problem would be solved.
mieses··on Reflections on the Guillotine (1957)
This just clarifies who the enemy is. I don't see a problem.
mieses··on Reflections on the Guillotine (1957)
A sheltered childhood would lead you to change your mind about anything if you saw someone spill a glass of milk. Emotions. Feelings.
mieses··on Reflections on the Guillotine (1957)
Camus wrote interesting fictions
mieses··on Show HN: Bramble – Local-first password manager
How this solves sync seems useful. If you use Google Drive and KeePass clients you will probably run into conflicts between keepass "safe save" and how google drive does file versioning, resulting in runaway duplication of your kdbx files. I started using Syncthing and KeePass. File version conflicts are rare but still happen. Including sync in the app seems like a good idea.

It would be good to see screenshots of Bramble. The "sprawl of plugins and forks" in KeePass is why I use it. Many of the KeePass clients have modern UI's. I'll think about switching to Bramble when the sprawl begins.

mieses··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
It is a stupid comparison with a stupid anti capitalist agenda. All infrastructure in Switzerland is high quality and highly maintained because they are a tiny and wealthy country. Their wealth has something to do with banking. Maybe the author of the stupid blog post can ponder the relationship between free markets, banking, and wealth.
mieses··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
he is a self described pacifist. how nice to be him.
mieses··on APC–2 – A professional record cutter for producing original playback discs
They make cool stuff but it's performance art. They're not a serious product company.
mieses··on APC–2 – A professional record cutter for producing original playback discs
Awesome design as always but Teenage Engineering has zero product support. After they make and sell a product they move on to other cool ideas. If anything stops to function you are left with just form.
mieses··on 1worldflag: A blue dot on a transparent background
glitter and foil will blow you away
mieses··on 1worldflag: A blue dot on a transparent background
The Empire of the Rising Blue Ink Dot (of the unelected EU bureaucracy).
mieses··on What happens if Japan takes in zero immigrants?
as long as 2 people remain it will work out. the mindset can evolve in a crisis.
mieses··on Sagrada Família Lego set
For that price I'd fly to go see it in person and spend the change on building the Kaaba.
mieses··on American capitalism has taken an apocalyptic turn
it got silly when you wrote "first woman"
mieses··on RISC-V Router
Vanilla OpenWRT runs Omnia (Marvell Armada). OpenWRT support for IPQ9574 is WIP. Omnia NG is IPQ9574.

mieses··on RISC-V Router
Turris Omnia NG is also "open source" and has 2x 10 Gbps SFP+ and 4x 2.5 Gbps ethernet ports. StartWRT and Turris OS are both forks of OpenWRT, which is kind of annoying. The Turris project has been around a long time and has an active community.
mieses··on Fidelity Won't Let Fund Holders Donate to Southern Poverty Law Center
It's astonishing that the left is upset about the SPLC being indicted for funneling money to white supremacist groups.
mieses··on The Anti-Intellectualism of Silicon Valley Elites
The stock egg photo was deep. It made me thing of eggs. I like eggs. I often make eggs into scrambled eggs and sometimes as sunny side up, not to mention soft boiled, which are probably the best. I assume Peter Thiel is bad guy who does not like eggs?
mieses··on Woman who had sex with identical twins told it is 'not possible' to identify dad
you bring an interesting perspective
mieses··on Woman who had sex with identical twins told it is 'not possible' to identify dad
no there isn't but i appreciate your amusing stupidity. this is a good example of the state of exception that most people with common sense intuitively understand.
mieses··on Jürgen Habermas, influential German philosopher, dies at 96
Interesting that you frame it in such a symmetric way. Habermas is thoroughly identified with the left and his influence on the right is at best indirect and contested.

While he sometimes identifies similar problems, he definitely does not arrive at similar solutions.
