midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
If that's what you think context clues means, I can't help you.
midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
You made 20% more and broke into six figures. Congrats, you're an average tech employee with baggage. Everyone that remembers you will be a hard no on future interviews.

Congrats I guess.

midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
> How do you know that individual wasn't approved for the 2 months? I missed that part of the story.

Context clues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Context_(language_use)

> Do you not believe an employee has the right to resign from a job

Of course. Nobody said any different. Are you confused about the thread you're responding to?

midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
If by "worked" you mean pissed off everyone and ruined your reputation and career, sure!
midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
> But 2 months off could be a totally reasonable amount?

Sure. Leave of two months should obviously be coordinated with your leadership, which this person didn't do.

Which makes your comment moot.

midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
Yes, the words are pretty plain and clear. You can take as much time off as you want, within reason. There is no cap.

Need a few days off for a break? Go for it. Want to take a two week vacation a few times per year. Approved!

Think you can take two months off and disappear? Nope. Some people were born without a nuance gene and don't understand this distinction.

midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
> The CEO made a dumb bet and lost. You can't be mad when you offer unlimited PTO and people use it

This is such a dumb take. Unlimited PTO does not mean you take two months off.

I'm tired of everything needing a footnote and qualifications because people like you only understand things in the most superficial sense.

midev··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
> He called the company's bluff

It wasn't a bluff. Unlimited PTO has never meant taking months off at a time.

I've never met an adult that needed clarification on what unlimited PTO means. Nonsense like this just ruins it for everyone else.

midev··on Ask HN: Where can you apply for a programming job when you are a Class A asshole
> Where can i get a job as a programmer where class A assholes can apply?

Only bad places, where you'll work with other miserable people. Most good places have a "No Assholes Allowed" rule.

> After years in the industry

If you're jumping through all these hoops after years, you might not be as good as you think you are. You make up for the ego hit by thinking interviews and the questions they ask are beneath you. When really, they're doing exactly what they're intended for. Weeding out asshole developers that think they're better than they are.

midev··on Apple Watch Series 7
> It'll be fun to look back on this comment in three years.

Despite over a decade of smartphones, screen size and resolution is often touted as the number one or number two feature.

Screen size, quality, and ease of use for watches will still be one of the biggest factors in three years.

midev··on Online coding school Treehouse lays off most of its staff
> what they are teaching is usually just too narrow to be all that useful

They were video lessons on HTML, CSS, and other languages. Your comment makes no sense, and sounds more like projection than valid criticism.

midev··on Cannabis use and myocardial infarction in young adults: a cross-sectional study
> You say this when someone brings up their daily coffee in real life, and not just this one time online?

We're talking about degrees. If someone I knew could not function without coffee, yes, I would suggest they talk to a doctor.

I don't know why this is controversial. Vices are great. I have plenty myself. But it's not good to have a dependency on anything...

midev··on Cannabis use and myocardial infarction in young adults: a cross-sectional study
> Funny how no one ever says this about caffeine intake. Surely you also think people who drink coffee every day are relying on a crutch and are drug addicts that need therapy

Lots of people say this. I'll even say it right now. If you need caffeine to function, you should probably talk to a doctor.

Drinking coffee every day does not mean it's a crutch. If it becomes a crutch, you should talk to a mental health professional.

There's no need to get upset because someone recommends you talk to a doctor.

midev··on Tripwire CEO 'Steps Down' After Supporting Texas Anti-Abortion Law
> why can he not voice his opinion on his personal social media

He can, and did, voice his opinion on social media. He was not prevented from doing so in any way. Other people read his opinion and decided they didn't want to work with him anymore. Also their right.

Because enough customers and partners decided they didn't want to work with him anymore, he felt like the only way to save his business was to step down.

> Should this very large group of people not be employable because of this opinion

It's not just an opinion, but legislation that puts millions of women at risk. If you support things that are harmful to women, I don't see why I'd employ you.

For what it's worth, this is what conservatives have been pushing for decades, the ability to discriminate based on skin color, sexual orientation, and political beliefs. I am all for giving them their wishes on this one.

midev··on Researchers studying Facebook misinformation say they were deplatformed
> A lot of small business/self employed folks don't have any kind of web presence other than FB/Instagram.

This is pretty cut and dry. Dom't build your business on top of another business, for which you have no contract.

There are plenty of alternatives, from Shopify to Etsy. None of which require a FB presence.

midev··on Researchers studying Facebook misinformation say they were deplatformed
> before it cuts someone off from what is becoming a vital service

Facebook is not a vital service. Popularity doesn't determine what is and is-not vital, nor does it remove the rights of a private business.

midev··on Fake Banksy NFT sold through artist's website for £244k
> Only a numbnut would believe those things can happen "anonymously".

I think you might be taking it too literally... Obviously some people know who he is... It's within the general public and media that he has remained anonymous...

It's weird insulting people when you're not correct about what they believe.

midev··on U.S. to work with Big Tech, finance sector on new cybersecurity guidelines
> how are you going to get your dick hard without being able to murder people just because you feel like it

What's your obsession with my penis? This is your second comment about it. I ignored it the first time, so you try harder the second time? You're a creepy dude.

midev··on U.S. to work with Big Tech, finance sector on new cybersecurity guidelines
It's kinda funny that when talking about foreign adversaries attacking the United States, you went to Edward Snowden.

You said it, not me.

midev··on U.S. to work with Big Tech, finance sector on new cybersecurity guidelines
Hard disagree. First, you downplay "unauthorized information access". Foreign adversaries have targeted our industrial SCADA systems, which can lead to death and destruction.

Second, there's no moral absolutes that dictate how a nation should act. I value the lives and information of my family and friends more than I value the lives of someone attacking them. Don't like it, don't attack...

> Send a surgical strike into a country that aside from having the presence of the bad actor had nothing to do with it?

Work with law enforcement agencies in those countries to apprehend the person. If the country won't cooperate or shields the attackers, then sure, a drone strike could work.

> My email provider doesn't get involved in what I am emailing (even though they might be "facilitating" a crime or other unsavory),

I guarantee you they do. This is right from SendGrid:

__Twilio SendGrid Email prohibits sending of any content that is illegal or content that is harmful, unwanted, inappropriate, objectionable, confirmed to be criminal misinformation, or otherwise poses a threat to the public, even if the content is permissible by law. This content is not allowed, regardless of user consent.__

They then have a huge list of prohibited topics. Pornography, misinformation, hate speech, etc.

I recommend you check your provider TOS.

> the car dealership doesn't get involved in what I am going to use the car for

Car dealerships are free to refuse you service for any reason, other than being a protected class. I guarantee there is a long list of activities you could tell a dealership you'd do, and they'd refuse you service.

> I mean by your logic a grocery store could ask what business you are in, and not sell you food because that is facilitating what you are doing.

Yes, this is literally the case, lol. Not just by logic, but by actual reality. A grocery store can refuse you service for any reason other than discrimination of a protected class.

You need to update yourself with the laws in this country.

> But to suggest that it somehow reflects badly on the credit card company that they are used on a porn site is ridiculous.

They are free to do business with anyone they see fit. Pornography comes with the significant risk of actual harm to people. Therefore, they don't want to be involved.

If you don't like it, maybe capitalism isn't for you.

midev··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
You are grossly misinformed. So much so I have to wonder why. PornHub JUST took down 600k videos of minors and consensual acts. https://www.engadget.com/pornhub-first-transparency-report-1...

Either you're commenting without being informed, or you're intentionally lying. Either way, you are harming people.

midev··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
> I don't see how a payment processor is "being associated" with the content

They are literally facilitating the transaction.... Handling payments which determine access to the content is very much "being associated".

> Deciding whether that sort of thing is happening really shouldn't be their purview.

That is their purview. Who they choose to process payments for, and the various rates based on content and risk, is the entire purpose of their business.

midev··on Why do so many people move to the Falkland Islands? (2009)
That would be fine if that was the initial offer. But it wasn't. It was a bait and switch. It wasn't until she was trapped that they pulled her pay.

That's criminal, and it's worrying you're justifying it under an account named "Workaccount2"

> Bullshit. When your "minor issue" becomes something that kills people, you test the living bejesus out of it before you think of deploying.

At no point did I say not to test before rollouts.

> When even the slightest change in UI becomes a deadly operator error

Stop being dramatic, because it's part of the problem. Yes, UI's are critical, and these UI's are absolute garbage. You need to improve rapidly, not agonize over bullshit changes in Microsoft Office.

https://www.thedoctors.com/articles/electronic-health-record...

https://ehrintelligence.com/news/diagnostic-medication-error...

EHR's are killing people because they are so poorly built. To reiterate, what you're doing is not working.

> you make damned good and sure that those errors won't happen

You're not making sure those errors are not happening, is the point.

midev··on There Is a Tennis Ball Shortage Too Now
> I don’t believe Americans would have the experience, social customs, physical stamina, emotional fortitude or knowledge to survive reasonably well if conditions took a serious turn for the worse.

It wasn't flag football or nerf that got us to the top.... We literally dominated everyone in everything, and continue to do so. Whether it be the military, sports (we just got done dominating the Olympics), tech, whatever.

It's absurd to think that given societal collapse, it would be the American's that struggle the most, and not, you know, the people that can't even make it when times are good...

You can knock us with a bunch of made up criticisms, like "emotional fortitude". But at the end of the day, every country still bends the knee to our "physical stamina". So that doesn't really say much about the rest of you surviving if conditions took a turn for the worse.

midev··on There Is a Tennis Ball Shortage Too Now
> My point was that people in the United States do not have experience dealing with even very minor hardships effectively

Again, yes! Due to our success! These aren't at all a knock on American's. It's what every generation of ours has fought for. An easier life for our children.

I am very very very grateful that my son does not have to deal with what people in other parts of the world deal with. I love that the idea of having no running water, defecating in the streets, surrounded by dead bodies is a completely foreign concept to him. That he wouldn't know how to deal with such a situation. And I hope his children have it even easier. That we're so wealthy we have UBI, and they can study art and music, and want for nothing.

> Meanwhile, over here in healthcare, I'm currently carefully evaluating whether to update some software packages from their 2011-release version to their 2015-release version

This could partially explain why healthcare IT is some of the worst in the world. Can't imagine the number of vulnerabilities you have from using such outdated tech.

From EHR systems, to basic appointment scheduling, to billing and insurance, everything is so poorly built and tedious for the users. Not to mention, healthcare is always falling victim to ransomware, shutting down entire hospital systems.

I know you'll say you need to move slow, lives are at risk, etc. But what healthcare IT is doing now certainly doesn't work. So maybe push on the gas a little bit.

midev··on There Is a Tennis Ball Shortage Too Now
> Most Americans have absolutely no idea what it is like to endure that sort of hardship

Which is great! Despite the flaws of capitalism, it's literally the point! As supply chains were impacted, new businesses and solutions filled the void. Given the vast amount of competition in things like toilet paper, automotive, etc, "shortages" just meant not getting your favorite brand for a few weeks.

> I know adults who act like they're going to starve because their peas were touching their potatoes.

I would take this over the horror shows of communism any day.

It's never a knock to say "your country is so good you've never had the massive hardships we have had!"
