michalpt··on I went back working on 24-inch 1080p screen from a 32-inch 4k screen
macOS scaling is the way to go here. I have been using LG 27UD88-W 4K monitor which is set to 2560x1440 and it works perfectly without any noticeable distortions.
michalpt··on AirPods revenue does not exceed Spotify, Twitter, Snapchat, and Shopify revenue
The article just got absolutely destroyed on Twitter: https://twitter.com/neilcybart/status/1214867813464236032
michalpt··on Ask HN: What was your first computer?
Commodore 64, still have it at home under a bed :)
michalpt··on Ask HN: Which laptop for development?
Macbook Pro without emoji keyboard
michalpt··on What I would do if I was 18 now
The problem with your post is that he is probably the last person that would fit this description.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Is it me or HackerNews needs a better UI?
HN layout is great. Much easier to navigate than Reddit for example. I wouldn’t change a thing.
michalpt··on Ask HN: What's your daily-driver headphone model?
Bose QC35. Best money I have spent on any audio equipment so far as it always puts me into that "hyperfocus" silent mode.
michalpt··on Ask HN: How often do you “unplug”?
Surfing. Nothing better for me than having a 2-4 hours surfing session and then return back to my computer with a clear head.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Why does YouTube not offer a download button?
As others said, there would be no need to go back to Youtube.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Which Chromebook to buy for parents?
I would say the price is the biggest factor here. Stylus is not necessary but to make it work/feel like computer, you definitely need a smart keyboard. Now all this in total is way more expensive than almost any Chromebook on the market.
michalpt··on Ask HN: How will I know when I'm ready for contract work?
Just please don’t tell that to a person that hired you :)
michalpt··on Ask HN: Which nootropics actually work?
Yes, as I said everyone is different so you need to test it out. For example I felt very bad after using Pyracetam. There was no improvement of my focus ability, in fact I was sleepy and head hurt.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Which nootropics actually work?
I have an inattentive type of ADHD and have tried almost everything to help me be a bit more focused when working. From prescribed Ritalin and Concerta (basically an extended version of Ritalin) to nootropics such as Pyracetam etc. Now the Ritalin of course had the biggest effect in terms of focus but after a while I started to feel like a zombie and junkie (lots of jittering, bad mood etc). So one day I decided to flush everything into a toilet and decided to only use available nootropics, not doctor prescribed medications. After a while I discovered DMAE and after 6 months of using it (350-500mg daily) I can say it is almost as effective as Ritalin for me without those nasty side effects and come-downs. The good thing about DMAE is that it helps me focus, yet it still feels natural without that "speedy feeling" effect of Ritalin. Now of course everyone is different and I know some people getting headaches from DMAE and no real results. You really need to test out what works best for your brain.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Living “The 4-Hour Work Week”?
No, because most of these books are bullshit allowing their authors getting rich by selling them to people who look for some kind of "magic success formula" :)
michalpt··on Ask HN: Best noise cancelling headphones for developers
I bought Bose QC35 2 weeks ago and I am absolutely thrilled about them. The noise cancelling is almost perfect and when I have them on and somebody speaks to me I really don’t hear anything. Unlike many other headphones I have tried they are also very comfortable. I tried Sony MDR-1000x and to be frank their noise canceling is maybe even better than the Boses, however they are so tight on my head I know I wouldn’t be able to wear them for more than an hour.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Which external monitor do you use?
Dell S2316M
michalpt··on Ask HN: Best Wunderlist replacement?
Well not having a Mac desktop app available is a deal breaker for me.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Best Wunderlist replacement?
Thank you. Todoist really seems like a best pick so far
michalpt··on Ask HN: Best Wunderlist replacement?
Yes but it is too robust and I feel it is more suited for teams not individuals :)
michalpt··on Ask HN: How you wake up?
I recently moved to San Diego from Central Europe and because some of my projects are based in Europe, my mornings (well if we can call them like that) are a bit tough :) as I wake up at 3:35 AM in order to be available to my European team during noon.

It is very surprising though, how a body can adapt to situation like this and after some adjustment period you feel rested even after 4-5 hours of sleep. The key for me is:

1. do a physical activity at least 4-5x times per week - swimming or running. 2. use Sleep Cycle app for iPhone 3. take my favourite DMAE pills 4. eat healthy

michalpt··on Ask HN: What are the best AI conferences in 2017 outside US?
If you are heading to Central Europe, Prague to be more specific, I would recommend Machine Learning Prague 2017: http://www.mlprague.com/. Some pretty interesting names such as Lars Backstrom (Facebook), Yufeng Guo (Google) and Pierre Baldi (University of California) should show up.
michalpt··on Ask HN: How much of your time at work do you spend not working?
Your description of ADHD is 100%, but for anyone trying to deal with this issue I would be very careful with meds prescribed from doctors, because for some of them it is mostly a big business. I was diagnosed with ADHD many years ago and prescribed with Ritalin and then an extended version of it (basically releasing throughout the whole day) and while it made me more productive, I experienced horrible jittering, crashes and I just did not feel like myself, but more like a zombie/junkie. I think it is scary that even 6-years old kids are prescribed with these pills nowadays.

pro tip: I was trying to find a natural solution, which for me is DMAE combined with fish-oil. It has basically the same effect for me in terms of productivity without the nasty side effects + you can buy it in every vitamin store. It is funny how I can almost immediately (within few days) notice when I stop taking these.

michalpt··on Ask HN: Do you still use browser bookmarks?
Nope :) For articles I use Pocket, anything else such as interesting websites, apps etc goes into Wunderlist.
michalpt··on Ask HN: How do you keep up with tech development and having personal life?
I don’t know if this is going to help you, but one of the biggest mistakes I did in the past was that I constantly tried to keep up with "cool" programming kids and technologies and wanted to learn everything. You see, you learn something and then 1 month later a new hyped framework comes, and all hipster startup programmers are switching to it (so do you) and you abandon the previous framework you have learned, then try to learn a new one and so on because you don’t want to be out. It is like a neverending circle :). So when I finally realized this I decided to stop folllowing trends so much and focus on a certain technology/part of programming and get good at it.

The result is that today I have more free personal time and I am still able to create basically anything with PHP and React by today’s standards, even though I realise I probably don’t use the coolest technology on the market.

michalpt··on Ask HN: Stories about women who helped you to become a better programmer?
Without my mum I probably wouldn’t be programming today. When I was 9-10 years old she gave me a Commodore 64 + printed BASIC book. I remember when I created my first "real" program = number guessing game. In that moment, my beloved programming journey started. Then few years later I switch to Pascal and so on :)
michalpt··on I miss Delphi
I loved Delphi as well. I remember developing games with Delphix and then GLScene :)
michalpt··on Ask HN: Do you have physical ailments from sitting all day?
I invested approximately $400 into a standing desk. Probably the best $400 I have ever spent. It helps me with my horrible neck pain (developed from leaning towards LCD all the time) and the added bonus is better alertness and focus.
michalpt··on Ask HN: What password manager do you use, and why?
I have been using KeePass for many years and didn’t know about this. Thx for the link
michalpt··on Tinkering vs. Reading Books
Well, the best way to know for sure is to get diagnosed :), although I believe this problem is waaaay overdiagnosed today because of the pharmaceutical lobby. So many people especially kids now take these unnecessary pills which make their heads even more messy. I decided not to take this route, and instead make an advantage from my ADD. For example hyperfocus is one of the common traits people with ADD have ,and allows you to be extremely focused on things you like for many hours and don’t get tired at all. On the other side when there is something you don’t enjoy - like reading a book in this case :) it is sometimes very hard to stay focused. In my case a diet has a big impact as well.
michalpt··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Skype/Lync
There is a new "Skype killer": https://beam.ai/ (currently in beta) which looks amazing and can also be easily integrated into Slack.
