michael_j_x··on Flock is rolling out a voluntary severance program
it's different when we voluntarily surveil ourselves
michael_j_x··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
imagine if a TV network served scammy ads during prime-time TV.
michael_j_x··on Claude Code login fails with OAuth timeout on Windows
"superpowers" is the exact name of the specific Claude code skill. The rest of your concerns is just me expressing my excitement, as until recently I was very skeptic of the whole vibe-coding movement, but have since done a complete 180.
michael_j_x··on Claude Code is locking people out for hours
Using your analogy, I enjoy composing music and enjoy playing music. I don't enjoy going through the notion of writing the notes on a piece of paper with the pen. I have to do it because people can't read my mind, but if they could I would avoid it. Claude code is like that. The code that gets written, feels like the code that I would have written
michael_j_x··on Claude Code login fails with OAuth timeout on Windows
I really enjoy coding. I've build a number of projects, personal and professional, with Python, Rust, Java and even some Scala in the mix. However, I've been addicted to Claude Code recently, especially with the superpowers skill. It feels like I can manifest code with my mind. When developing with Claude, I am presented with design dilemmas, architectural alternatives, clarification questions, things that really make me think about the problem. I then choose a solution, propose alternatives, discuss, and the code manifests. I came to realize that I enjoy the problem solving, not the actual act of writing the code. Like I have almost cloned my self, and my clones are working on the projects and coming back to me for instructions. It feels amazing
michael_j_x··on Has electricity decoupled from natural gas prices in Germany?
If you are selling to the grid, there is probably over-supply. Prices are driven by supply and demand. If you want to avoid selling at lower prices and buying at higher, try and get a battery. Check ecoflow to get an idea of the costs.
michael_j_x··on Why senior engineers let bad projects fail
You can voice your concerns, but should not go fighting, especially at personal cost. It could be that you may be wrong in your assessment, and the project turns out to be successful, or it could be that you may have been right for the wrong reasons, or it could be that you were right all along. In any case, you are part of a company, and that means recognizing that yours is only one of many opinions driving strategy and allocating resources. If you find your self often needing to stand up against others for your beliefs, then you are probably not in the right company.
michael_j_x··on The Signal Is the Noise
what guys is this? Sounds like an interesting read
michael_j_x··on Why my p(doom) has risen, dramatically
This is such a utilitarianistic point of view, Not everyone is defined by their work, not everyone cares about how distinguishable they are from the others, or even how the others think of them, and I would even argue, that very few oligarchs/billionaires etc belong to the group of people that truly enjoy life.
michael_j_x··on SeleniumBase: Python APIs for web automation and bypassing bot-detection
I've been working with scrapers quite a lot. I started with python requests, then to scrapy, then selenium, then selenium via undetected_chromedriver, and once that started being detected during a chrome update about a year ago, I've switched over to seleniumbase. It got by undetected, but to get it working with pre-downloaded drivers, I had to look into the code. I have never, and I mean never, in all my python years, seen such a horrible mess of code. We are talking 1000lines long methods, with 20-30 different flags and branches Just horrible. I have since switched to Playwright, which seems to be also undetected, and offers a much saner interface.

michael_j_x··on Nasa nears decision on what to do with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft
They did 2, second 1 being a repeat of the first one at Boeing's expense, cause the first one failed.

michael_j_x··on Toyota cashes in on booming hybrid sales
Where I live it is a) very sunny almost all year round and b) very common to have PVs on your roof. I currently have 5KWH installed on my roof, I have a Nissan Leaf which I charge every day whilst I am working for home and I've paid 70euros total for electricity in the last 2 months, whilst running the underfloor heating constantly.
michael_j_x··on Alaska 737 cockpit voice recorder data erasure renews safety debate
well, they do record my slack messages for 2-3 months, and I am ok with that, even though that's my main method of communicating with my colleagues, and includes a number of personal conversations with them. Now, if my work required me to be able to verbally communicate with my colleagues, and the consequence of miscommunicating was the loss of 100s of lives and millions in property, then I would expect them to record every single thing I said, spoken or written, judiciously.
michael_j_x··on Researchers discover physical cause of long Covid tiredness
Have you tried smell training (basically you sniff 3-4 different types of essential oils daily). My girlfriend lost her smell due to covid for a year or so, and got it back about a month after starting smell training
michael_j_x··on Chief executive of collapsed crypto fund Hyperverse does not appear to exist
it's crazy that Wozniak would participate in such a service. Is he running out of money?
michael_j_x··on Ask HN: What's your "it's not stupid if it works" story?
I have centralized AC and the wall-mounted control panel is located in a small storage room. I wanted to hack the control panel with an Arduino and a Raspberry pi so I can control it remotely via my Alexa. I ended up buying a switch bot [0] and an IP camera and was done with it.

michael_j_x··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
I meant for the ATC to provide a descent estimate of when Lufthansa should be expected to enter the AERODROME TRAFFIC CIRCUIT (since you want tolink the FAA glossary) in order to land (they had them on a hold pattern for 35+ minutes). This is independent of whether the approach is IFR or VFR. A TOWER controller has all the information necessary to calculate that estimate, and should be expected to do so, the same way a stock trader is expected to calculate PnL of their positions on the fly given the current stock price.
michael_j_x··on Is there anywhere in the world someone can just live for free?
The monastic community of Mount Athos, Greece. It's free in the sense you don't pay anything, but you have to become an Orthodox monk, with whatever that entails
michael_j_x··on Sam Bankman-Fried gambled on a trial and his parents lost
I don't disagree with you in general, but this specific fallout is not due to them being the innocent parents of a guilty son. Their reputation was mostly harmed because of their invovlement in FTX and how they benefited from it, how they reacted after the collapse and how this is so antithetical to their image as ethical role models of society. I think this comment from the same article gives much more info https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/2/23944485/sam-bankman-frie...
michael_j_x··on Building an economy simulator from scratch

michael_j_x··on Vitalik Buterin reveals X account hack was caused by SIM-swap attack
I don't understand this sim-swapping concept. Where I am from (EU country), if you need to get a new sim for your number, you have to physically go to your service provider's stores with an official proof of identity (passport or identity card) and do the change. Upon changing, your previous sim immediately loses service
michael_j_x··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
For ML stuff, it was a poor mans Matlab with great C and C++ bindings
michael_j_x··on Environmental groups sue the FAA over SpaceX launch from Texas
I am sure any place that:

a. it is by the sea so that they are not flying over populated areas b. it is remote enough so that a 1000tonne methane explosion will not endanger anyone or their property and c. it is close enough to civilization so that they have a good access to skilled and un-skilled labour

will have the same issues as they are having in Boca Chica

michael_j_x··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
worked for about a week on very specific brokers. Then they started slipping my trades. Slippage became a big issue. I still can't fathom why such a thing is legal
michael_j_x··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
a sub-ms trading platform written in Rust to try and do arbitrage across multiple FX brokers.
michael_j_x··on Who Is Running Stanford?
If an IT department of a major organization has both the time and motivation to construct and publicize such a document, that speaks volumes of the incentive structure and cooperate priorities of their organization. The fact that they released such document in the public domain without first running it from the PR department speaks volumes to their incompetence. This was not some random internal IT document. This was an official, public Stanford policy, advertised as part of a specific PR strategy.
michael_j_x··on Ask HN: How do you think LLMs will affect society medium/long term?
I am sure the uber-drivers felt the same way when we got the first glimpse of CNN driving a car back in the mid-2010s. Almost a decade later and we have now accepted that self-driving will not happen within this decade and without another leap in AI technology.
michael_j_x··on A Heisenbug lurking in async Python
I am not sure I agree that the GUI is a good use case for async. A human interaction with the program must almost always pre-empt whatever the program was running, so I can not see how a cooperative multi-threading runtime like async Python can work in such a scenario.
michael_j_x··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job?
Is the job remote? If so, then if you get paid as a mid-level dev, you should perform as a good mid-level dev. Nothing more than that. Do the absolute minimum required to remain on the standard promotion path (i.e. the 1.5-2 years you said).

Try to arrange your meetings to keep your Friday free. Use your new-found free time to search for new jobs, or even bootstrap your own project.
