mhermher··on Google loses EU appeal and is fined a record $4B
This is what the entire ruling is about. They are not free to do so if they also sell with Google Play Services. It's the root of the entire issue is that the above requirement is in the agreements that Google has with manufacturers. The EU is striking down this type of agreement such that manufacturers will actually have that freedom.

This news is about Android.

It's hard to find value in something that you immediately uninstall.

Not even necessarily the "market" of consumers, but more specifically the market of manufacturers.

Why would a manufacturer sell both devices with ancient and current versions of Android at the same time? There is no reason to limit this behavior because no one would do it. This is entirely about smothering AOSP forks.
mhermher··on RavynOS – Finesse of macOS, freedom of FreeBSD
That's where window snapping comes into play. Maximize + Snapping is a much better system that "a hundred arbitrarily sized and arbitrarily overlapping windows". It's very much the opposite of finesse.
mhermher··on Germany has seized control of Gazprom Germania
Why do you doubt it?
mhermher··on Germany has seized control of Gazprom Germania
There is no need for influence, bribery, or espionage. It was simply the cheapest, most reliable source of energy. Russian gas "won" on the market. Regardless of what route Germany takes from here, it's almost certain they'll be paying more in energy costs.

mhermher··on Why the West is reluctant to deny Russian banks access to SWIFT
Where are the rules? You're all over this thread taking about RBIO and you haven't cited any rules. Not a single one. Where is it written? May I read a list of your rules?
mhermher··on Why the West is reluctant to deny Russian banks access to SWIFT
Of course the US follows the rules, by definition.

The "Rules Based International Order" is just a euphemism for "Post War US Hegemony". And the rules are "The US state department tells you what to do, and you do it".

Anyway, a rules-based international order already exists. It's called the UN charter, but that's not what they mean.

"rules-based international order"

Where are these rules written, do you have a link?

mhermher··on Nuclear Power in France
ah! I always wondered about this distinction, but I guess it makes sense that it's due to people's fear over "nuclear".
mhermher··on Court issues permanent injunction in Epic vs. Apple case
They're just gonna increase developer license fees.
mhermher··on Tesla is ordered to turn over Autopilot data to a federal safety agency
The fact that it occurs so often should suggest to you that autopilot itself makes people too comfortable and not pay attention.
mhermher··on Microsoft is bringing Android apps to Windows 11
I always wondered if a WINE for Play Services was possible.
mhermher··on Microsoft bids $44.6B to buy Yahoo (2008)
No, it was snuck in with Java updates (or maybe Flash?). Unless you spotted the correct checked-by-default option.

mhermher··on A top-grossing scam on the App Store
Do you actually believe this? I have a hard time thinking that anyone believes "Apple has no such market position to abuse.". It's absurd.

mhermher··on A singular mind: Roger Penrose on his Nobel Prize
We are all sentient, and many have had that realization. But how many have refused to act? No, we just mostly participate in that harm in order to survive.
mhermher··on The self-driving car is a red herring
Sidenote, I love the idea of the "post-pandemic age of austerity", as if it contrasts with the "pre-pandemic age of austerity".
mhermher··on The self-driving car is a red herring
In his intro speech of the Model 3, specifically talking about the FSD he was selling, he talked about something like "one day you could sleep while your car ...". I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something along those lines. Tying it very closely (albeit in some indefinite future) to the product he was selling. He's not a "realist" or "skeptic" in any way.
mhermher··on The self-driving car is a red herring
I mean, it clearly isn't. When is the last time you heard that in earnest and not as a joke?
mhermher··on The self-driving car is a red herring
Is the manufacturer gonna take the liability for those deaths?
mhermher··on Fortnite’s battle with Apple and Google could have an impact on news publishers
Too bad. I guess they'll have to find some other way to make money outside of rent.
mhermher··on Fortnite’s battle with Apple and Google could have an impact on news publishers
The obvious difference is that those game developers have the choice to be exclusive to the epic store, or steam, or neither or whatever. They are making the choice.
