mhansen··on Windows Live Essentials 2011 out
Why do you think it's doomed to fail?
mhansen··on SSD with New HSDL Interface Boasts Gobs of Bandwidth
The same - my CPU was about only about 50% saturated on the pv command (if the disk was twice as fast, I guess the CPU would become the bottleneck)
mhansen··on SSD with New HSDL Interface Boasts Gobs of Bandwidth
Thanks for the tip!
mhansen··on SSD with New HSDL Interface Boasts Gobs of Bandwidth
For some perspective:

    cat /dev/sda | pv > /dev/null
Reads 188MB/s on my new Thinkpad's Samsung SSD
mhansen··on Squeryl: A concise, type-safe Scala ORM and DSL
Needs a code example on the front page.
mhansen··on Ask HN: How is justin.tv legal?
They're a safe harbour under the DMCA, as long as they respond to all takedown requests. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmca
mhansen··on Confessions of your worst WTF moment
rsync --delete is the new rm -rf (it's bitten me more than once)
mhansen··on Native ZFS for Linux
Please explain?
mhansen··on Ever notice Chrome has no "Set image as wallpaper"?
Thank you for valuing simplicity!
mhansen··on Coming Home to Vim
For a free, cross-platform (and excellent) alternative to PeepOpen, try Command-T

I used to use FuzzyFinder_TextMate, but that's stopped development, and the creator recommends you use Command-T instead.

mhansen··on Ask HN: What Firefox/Chrome extensions do you use?
Drag the different pairs of tabs together and use Ctrl-Tab + Shift-Ctrl-Tab to switch between them?
mhansen··on htty, the HTTP TTY
Doesn't look like that supports other HTTP methods (a CTRL-F for 'delete' shows nothing).
mhansen··on Oracle Hires Mark Hurd As Co-President
Can you explain the reasons?
mhansen··on htty, the HTTP TTY
Just a bit of (unrelated) feedback: It's difficult to see the tty examples in small scaled images.
mhansen··on How Debt Can Destroy a Budding Relationship
That's insane. I'm at Waikato University, New Zealand, and we pay around NZD13000 (~= USD9000) a year
mhansen··on Ask HN: What do you use to monitor site uptime?
Dead simple, you can't get much simpler than http://wasitup.com/

Three form fields. Click submit. Done. It's been monitoring my blog for the last six months

mhansen··on Ask HN: Python+Ruby hackers - which OS/distro are you using?
IMO, there's more important things to choose an OS based on. Especially since Python and Ruby are both well-supported on all of the unices.

Find an OS that makes you happy. Like the Mac interface? Go OS X. Like tiling window managers, and automatic package management? Go linux.

FWIW, I use Ubuntu 10.04.

mhansen··on It’s Time To Disqus (YC S07) Our Community
I completely disagree, and I'm getting a big "Not Invented Here" vibe.

Disqus comments are excellent. They handle comment threading, email notifications, voting, login (with your choice of about 5 providers), moderation, spam control... the list goes on and on.

Disqus manages all this while making everything look good.

I use disqus on my blog, because I've got better things to do than reinvent the wheel, especially when there's some extremely polished commodity wheels. It would take me months to implement all the functionality disqus gives me for free.

mhansen··on Ask HN: How do people really test their code?
I'm interested in what you mean by the 'really' in the title. Do you think there's some kind of secret to how people test that they're not revealing?

If you want to see some 'IRL' test code, have a look at your favorite open source project. The test code will all be there, usually in a folder just off the root called 'tests/'.

mhansen··on All about GNU Screen
That project has matured a lot, it's now called byobu. It's friggin' awesome. https://launchpad.net/byobu
mhansen··on All about GNU Screen
Can you elaborate on why you prefer tmux? Myself, I use byobu, a set of user-friendly wrapper scripts around screen.
mhansen··on Ladies, look at your code. Now back to mine.
It's sad that you can't easily chain these methods. e.g.

    employees.filter(predicate1).filter(predicate2).filter(predicate3)
instead of

    Iterables.filter(Iterables.filter(Iterables.filter(employees,predicate1), predicate2), predicate3)
mhansen··on Poll: Where abouts are you hackers from?
Damn, guys, fill in your profile pages! It's hard to find programmers here - it'd be awesome to get in contact with some other HN readers in New Zealand
mhansen··on Poll: Where abouts are you hackers from?
New Zealand
mhansen··on The Future of Web Apps - Single Page Applications
By 'an AJAX call', do you mean having the client periodically ping the server, and then cleaning up the session if the ping times out?
mhansen··on The Future of Web Apps - Single Page Applications
He suggests keeping the cart clientside in (e.g.) a javascript array.
mhansen··on Why GNU grep is Fast
They're about the same amount of trippiness. Boyer-Moore makes the same kind of jump table, except Boyer-Moore starts comparing at the end of the search string.
mhansen··on Node.js 0.2.0 released
ASCII is 7-bit (encoded in 8 bits - the high bit is ignored) and UTF-8 takes 8 bits for most characters, but can take 16+ bits for some characters.

Node is built for massive scalability on applications that (mostly) pass text from one source to another. Thus, having to convert the encoding of every string that passes through node can be a bottlenck.

Felixge has a good writeup of this: http://debuggable.com/posts/streaming-utf-8-with-node-js:4bf...

mhansen··on What different sorting algorithms sound like
There's a lot of effort been put in to this, I like it.

I love that you can hear the bubbling in bubble sort :D

mhansen··on Ask HN: How do large sites manage outbound emails/queueing
I don't understand. Can you elaborate on what you mean by 'weird' and why the BSD's do better?
