mgrouchy··on Things to know about databases
I have been really enjoying the content so far, any hits on whats coming up?
mgrouchy··on Framework Laptop Wins Two Design Awards
I think the Framework laptop is awesome and is very unique with some awesome features. I am left with one question, why does the industrial design on every premium laptop look like a MacBook pro? Basically the only premium laptop that looks different is the X1 carbon.
mgrouchy··on Y Combinator has lost its soul: A YC founder's perspective
2 Questions totally unrelated to your comment, but related to bottomless: 1) Do you ship to Canada? 2) How much weight can that scale hold?

I have a grinder with a built in (sealed) hopper where I store my beans. I assume from the setup, the grinder would have to sit on it for ease of use.

mgrouchy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2019)
PageCloud | Senior Python Developer | Onsite | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

PageCloud's adaptive website building platform enables you to freely customize your content and layout without the use of code. Similar to responsive builders, PageCloud pages are divided into easy-to-manage sections that make building and editing much faster.

You can build your own custom sections or choose from a collection of over 1000+ professionally designed sections. Each section can be easily duplicated, reordered, or copy and pasted onto other pages.

Unlike most website builders, PageCloud gives you full access to the source code so that designers, developers, and small business owners can all collaborate on the same platform.

Furthermore, with hundreds of app integrations (including e-commerce), PageCloud makes it easy for businesses to connect to the tools they are already using.

We are looking for a Senior Python Developer with a backend generalist skillset to join our incredible team. If you are interested in architecting systems/APIs, writing Python3/Django, wrangling systems(AWS) and writing some kotlin. Shoot me an email at mike@pagecloud.com.

mgrouchy··on We Are Typists First, Programmers Second (2008)
Im in a similar boat. I am not a touch typist and I can do around ~70-80 WPM, its never been a problem for me (been coding professionally for like 13 years and been coding as a hobbiest since I was 10 years old).

At this point I'm not sure what benefit I would get as I spend far less time typing now.

That being said, I almost want to learn just so I don't have to have this conversation anymore when this post inevitably pops up every couple of years.

mgrouchy··on Google dedicates engineering team to accelerate development of WordPress
Not great if you are looking for a DIY solution, however in the SAAS space I run the Engineering team at a company that is doing essentially this, https://www.pagecloud.com . Blog (If thats what you are looking for) and some other goodies on the rapid site construction side, coming very soon.
mgrouchy··on Why Python Is Not My Favorite Language (2016)
Python 3.5+ has type hints now (and a standalone typechecker). It doesn't do runtime checking by default, but you can use a 3rd party library to enforce these things if you are concerned about type safety (at the boundaries of your programs for checking inputs for example).

More info on this in the pep: https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0484/

mgrouchy··on Ask HN: What's the best computer science book you've read recently?
This is a great book. I love the approach, it really helps with one of the main problems with using algorithms or design patterns even and that is problem identification. There are a bunch of problems that are way easier to solve if you recognize the solution exists in dynamic programming for example, but if you don't they become very hard.
mgrouchy··on Waterloo Co-op: A Blessing and a Curse
I went to a university basically no one here has ever heard of but The engineering program has the same 4 month on/off schedule. I was a CS student and the CS department has a co-op/internship program that is a bit different, its a minimum 8 months and max 16 months continuous which is really nice. Actually helps you get settled in and accomplish something fairly substantial.

It also, allows you to organize it in a way that you can schedule it to start right before your last semester, so you can potentially start your co-op, complete it, do 1 semester in school then get out in the work force.

mgrouchy··on Show HN: Hacker News for mobile devices
Yes, its very nice. I use this iOS app as well.

iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hacker-news-yc/id713733435

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.premii.hn

And its open source too! https://github.com/premii/hn

mgrouchy··on Hydra: A lightweight OS X window manager with a powerful API
Interesting. I use Moom for this http://manytricks.com/moom/, but I will give this a try.
mgrouchy··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
As always, hammering away on new ideas for Pycoder's Weekly (http://pycoders.com), a fairly popular Python newsletter.

Also doing some work on a basketball news site, HoopsMachine(http://hoopsmachine.com), which currently isn't much more then a pretty awful looking up to date feed of Basketball news (with accompanying RSS feed). Keep an eye out though, lots of stuff to come there soon.

mgrouchy··on The Open-office Trap
My university did this as well. I also worked on the software that handled the configuration management for these machines too. Really awesome setup. http://www.labnet.ca/MainPage/index.html
mgrouchy··on Check your Google history
Clicked on this and says I don't have it enabled. From the collected reactions so far in here. I am expecting that is a good thing.
mgrouchy··on Airpnp: Like Airbnb, but for toilets
Hah, clever idea. My strategy, which works well in fairly urban areas in decently sized cities(so imperfect I know), is to just use the bathroom in Hotel Lobbies. Always clean and always available and usually no problem accessing them.
mgrouchy··on The Best of Python in 2013
This list(and much of the commentary is just lifted from our(Pycoder's Weekly) newsletters and yearly project roundup issue.

mgrouchy··on Open for everyone
Knew the writing was on the wall since I got an invite a couple of weeks ago :P
mgrouchy··on Poll: How many hours a day are you looking at a screen?
I have recently started using flux and have found the effects to be significantly positive. The sleep schedule wasn't something I was worried about, but I have found it to be fantastic for eye fatigue.
mgrouchy··on Read less HN
Thanks for the Pycoders Weekly mention John!
mgrouchy··on Show HN: Harp Platform now available to the public
I don't see how that would make any sense. Why would they do that? To me, it seems like Dropbox wants to sell storage to people, the more things that plug into Dropbox, the more storage they sell.

Twitter made a bunch of moves to limit third party integration because they need to control the channel so they can sell ads to be displayed on the platform, and display promoted accounts and tweets.

mgrouchy··on Tap your iPhone to unlock your Mac
This is pretty cool and its nice that you can knock your phone to unlock while in your pocket but it means if I leave my phone at my desk to charge anyone can unlock my computer, which is a no-go.

I wish someone would just hurry up and implement unlocking of your mac via touchid(I have no idea if its technically possible to use touchid for other apps then apples).

mgrouchy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2013)
If you are looking for a Job as a Python Developer you should check out http://www.pythonjobshq.com the job board for the Pycoder's Weekly newsletter.
mgrouchy··on Introducing Trello Gold
Hrm. Scanning the comments here, this is not a joke. Weird. To me, wouldn't larger board uploads be a good enough up-sell to pay 5 bucks for? This sticker/background thing just seems strange.
mgrouchy··on KitKat's new website
Well, marketing works it seems.
mgrouchy··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2013)
If you are looking for a Python related job check out http://www.pythonjobshq.com/ it's the job board for the Pycoder's Weekly newsletter.
mgrouchy··on Show HN: Redistats - Web stats using Redis
Seeing as this is software as a service and not open source, whats up with the name? Why does it matter that you are using redis? I see you mention it in the "modern proven technologies" section, but that's not a selling point(to me anyway).
mgrouchy··on Gistblog – a blogging platform for Github users
If this interests you should check out gist.io as well as an alternative. Slightly different concept, but still equally interesting.

mgrouchy··on Relative Line Numbers in Vim
Probably worth mentioning numbers.vim (https://github.com/myusuf3/numbers.vim) as an easy plugin to get the relative line numbers going in your vim setup.
mgrouchy··on Using Dispatch Tables to Avoid Conditionals in JavaScript
Interesting. Ive seen something similar to this quite often used in Python because it doesn't have Switch statements.
mgrouchy··on Vision

    > Right, except they don't understand social,
I'm assuming you mean that they don't understand Mobile because a social network that has over 1 Billion users likely understands social fairly well.
