mgraupner··on More than 75 percent decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass (2017)
That's exactly what I do. 1/2 of my garden is wild with wild flowers, habitats for insects and birds and on the other half no pesticides are used, I just weed by hand. Great diversion if you're stuck with a programming problem...
mgraupner··on More than 75 percent decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass (2017)
Fellow German here. I go out for mountain biking and gravel rides a lot. Every time I pass agriculture fields in summer, there is no "noise" anymore, it's totally quiet. No birds, no insects, nothing, it almost seems dead. As soon as I come to places where nature can be itself, there is an abundance of sounds, nature is thriving. Unfortunately the former prevails the latter several times.

I guess I don't need any studies of WHAT is killing these insects...

mgraupner··on The audacity of Apple Podcasts
Only in multi core. Single core performance is up 18%. I once read you need at least 20% higher speed to feel an improvement. Perhaps the 120 Hz display is a much higher factor in the perceived performance in your new phone.
mgraupner··on Omega-3s: Are “Brain-Boosting” Effects Scientifically Backed?
Interesting. I had similar symptoms like migraine/brain fog, stiff neck and muscle tension as soon as October (winter in Central Europe) came. Tested for Vitamin D deficiency and had super low levels. Since taking supplements I feel good in winter for the first time in probably 5 years. I'm also a very outdoorsy person, so getting enough sun is not always a sure way wo have high levels of Vitamin D.

May I ask if you had gut/intestine problems before?

The iPhone 12 mini has an A14 and the iPhone 14 an A15 processor. Geekbench single core performance is 7% better in the newer one. I doubt you're "feeling" the difference in speed between these two phones. The battery life in the 12 mini was not considered good from the start, so it's understandable, that after two years the battery is in not so good shape anymore.
mgraupner··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
Yes, as the predecessor supported multiple monitors this one will too. It's also in the specs on apple.com.
mgraupner··on Studies find automatic braking can cut crashes over 40%
Such a great feature, both of my last cars had this "presense" breaking. I was never really in a situation where it was critical, but the feeling that the breaks are already in a ready state (touch it slightly and you knew a little bit more will do hard breaking instead of going all the way) when I was touching it felt pretty reassuring and a little magic at the same time.

Did you really measure these 140 W or does the power brick says 140 W?
mgraupner··on Tesla Vision Update: Replacing Ultrasonic Sensors with Tesla Vision
You should give the new BMW i4 a test, it's probably a much better car than the BMW you had. Built quality of BMW combined with the advantages of an electric car without the "features" of Elon Musk as discussed in here.

"Car leases trough employers are only for German cars" - that is not true, as a German company you can lease whatever car you want for your employees. They are predominantly German cars for the obvious reasons. :)

Perfect explanation. Not much more to do for almost every project.

I think Tuxedo sells similar laptops to System76 with Linux preinstalled and reasonable shipping rates within Europe:

mgraupner··on Flask Mega-Tutorial (2017)
As others have said: What has one to do with the other? As a Flask pro you probably know that you can create great APIs with it. And iOS apps can consume them.

Hey Miguel, wanted to thank you for creating this tutorial. It started my freelancing career and I created great projects based on it. Thank you very much!
mgraupner··on Computer work lying down comfortably with a home-made stand over the bed
Wow, I did not know this is possible with a Mac now. I think Thinkpads supported this but not the Mac. Great find!
mgraupner··on Computer work lying down comfortably with a home-made stand over the bed
Checked the reviews for this particular one, no one is mentioning fire. If you search for Apple charger caught fire you will find some, can happen to any electronic device.

I have three of them plugged in 24/7 for 3 years now and recommended them to others, all houses still standing. But you can also get the original 96 W charger from Apple, it's bigger so it can dissipate heat better than the smaller ones.

mgraupner··on Computer work lying down comfortably with a home-made stand over the bed
About the heat: I have a MacBook Pro M1 16" and a third-party 65 W charger, it barely gets warm, far from even recognising by being close to it. Perhaps you should get a better charger if it heats up so much. The one I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Baseus-Adapter-Delivery-Folda...
mgraupner··on State of the Web: Static Site Generators
I worked with middleman[0] before and it was much easier to setup for these kind of sites. It might not be as fast as Hugo but who cares if you change a page every other month.

mgraupner··on State of the Web: Static Site Generators
Do not use Hugo for this kind of setup. It's horrendously complicated and it was probably never meant to be used like this. Hugo might be good for a blog, but even a simple personal static site where you want to have different templates for each page is only achievable by jumping so many hoops.
mgraupner··on Over 10% of Tesla Model S EVs Fail Germany’s Strict Inspection After 3 Years
Thank you for the information, I was just looking up the max speeds in Wikipedia.
mgraupner··on Over 10% of Tesla Model S EVs Fail Germany’s Strict Inspection After 3 Years
Perhaps driving 155mph or up to 200mph (max speeds of the various Model S) as it is possible in Germany puts another level of stress on the suspension and they start to fail prematurely. Maintenance is not the same as reliability. So not laughable at all.
mgraupner··on Over 10% of Tesla Model S EVs Fail Germany’s Strict Inspection After 3 Years
Yeah, they are very different statistics. TÜV checks if your car is safe to drive on roads, and everybode is obligated to do so every second year (except the first one which is after 3 years). I don't know what ADAC is counting, broken cars on highways probably. :)
mgraupner··on Over 10% of Tesla Model S EVs Fail Germany’s Strict Inspection After 3 Years
As a German I can't attest most of the stuff you wrote.

You go to TÜV directly when you know/think that your car won´t fail the inspection. Otherwise you bring it to the dealership or an independent garage beforehand (in case of the Tesla or if you want so save money). They will fix the stuff for you and then introduce it to inspection. No matter if you drive a BMW, Dacia or Tesla. And TÜV is not cheaper, they want more or less all the same amount of money.

These statistics of TÜV are not about broken cars, it's about road safety. Broken head lamps, failing breaks, rubbers at suspension is brittle, .... These kind of things. And yes, most(not all) German cars won't fail at these things in the first five or so years. And yes, there were cars with bad transmission (DSG), failing engines and so on, but these problems are not counted in the TÜV statistics.

mgraupner··on Over 10% of Tesla Model S EVs Fail Germany’s Strict Inspection After 3 Years
TÜV is not about general car defects or problems like failing transmissions or the infamous camshaft chain failure of VW engines. TÜV is about failures of your car which prevents it from secure operation like failing head lamps, suspession problems and so on.
