mgiampapa··on Bizarre Talmudic Scenarios
Required to integrate, no. Should they be polite members of civil society? Yes.

My issue isn't what they do in their congregations and communities, but how they interact with the rest of the world. I've personally been treated extremely poorly by strangers in the Orthodox community just going about my day in the city. Between that and other experiences, I'm just shocked at how prevalent racism is among the Jewish Orthodox community in particular.

Hardly, I'm asking why a community that has lived somewhere for generations remains insular to the point of xenophobia and treats people not in their group who also live there as non-people. Why come to NYC in the first place given it's reputation for inclusion and mixing cultures? It's wrong to discriminate both ways, and having seen it firsthand I don't understand it.
mgiampapa··on Bizarre Talmudic Scenarios
Yeah, that's the thing I don't understand. NYC is known as a melting pot of cultures and it isn't inexpensive at all, even out at the far ends of the NRD and B trains. Why be in a great cosmopolitan city if you aren't going to give your neighbor the time of day when you go out and interact? It's not like I'm talking about interactions at a Yeshiva or a Synagogue, but out doing every day things like shopping, or going to for a walk in the park.

You are not alone, having lived in Brooklyn in Orthodox areas, I have encountered some ridiculous racism from the orthodox community. Frankly even a trip to Costco in Brooklyn will give you a huge amount of perspective on how many view non-orthodox jews as "Others" and "Non-People".

That said, I also worked with the Safardic Jewish community doing tech in the garment industry and as the token gentile I was loved on and respected for my work.

Like every culture there is a broad spectrum, but if the Orthodox jews of NYC are anything to go on, I am seriously questioning why they are choosing to live here.

I got in so much trouble due to a gaping security hole in At Ease back in 7th grade. You could put a floppy disk in and it would present the documents and folders, but no applications. However, it would allow you to open Desk Accessories (a System <6 era type of special app which could multitask before multi-finder).

So being the nerdy troublemaker that I was, I used a DA to launch other programs such as ResEdit and bob's your uncle. I had installed all the cool After Dark screen savers on each machine including the little space game one.

They never figured out how I did it, but they did put two and two together that I was the one who had done it. They tried to suspend me for 2 days for it, but my Dad argued that they weren't providing interesting classes using the technology. Not only did I not get suspended, next year they ended up making Sim Earth into a class and using it as a teaching aid.

Thanks Dad, I miss you.

mgiampapa··on But life had other plans
In the US that would be medical malpractice. A pregnancy test would be standard before this type of surgery.

That said, congratulations for the best outcome.

mgiampapa··on G Suite free edition no longer available starting July 1, 2022
Personally, I will lilely setup an on-prem Exchange instance and start mirroring content, but its a tool I happen to know well.

My real plan is to wait for enough pain at Google by other nerdy employees to either solve the political or technical issues migrating out, or for this policy change to go away.

I'll have my bags packed, but I still have hope that July is far enough away to not have to turn out the lights behind me.

mgiampapa··on ASML reports fire at its Berlin factory
Beats breathing fluorine!
mgiampapa··on DNS doesn't “propagate”
DNS servers push to other authoritative resolvers. There are all kinds of topologies for zone transfers.

It's not what a user thinks of, but in terms of I updated a record and have to wait for it to be "everywhere" it's entirely part of the change latency to the end user and outside the scope of caching and TTLs being honored.

mgiampapa··on Facebook paid billions to spare Zuckerberg in data suit, shareholders allege
Common shares vote, insider shares just vote 10x more per share. He isn't the only one that has them, but the way things are structured he has control of the company and more than half the total votes.
mgiampapa··on Awingu: Simpler Citrix alternative
VMware is stupidly complex when it comes to management and deployment infra. I found Citrix far simplier and about 10x less expensive (particularly because it has much higher user density than a whole VM), but I'm also a few years distant from the VDI space.
mgiampapa··on FB messenger silently censoring links, claims they were sent
Hackernews does shadowbanning as well.
mgiampapa··on Avis “Stole” Back Car from Customer and Denied It
Yeah, this is unlikely to be Avis itself, but some employee scam. Newark NJ is shady AF.
mgiampapa··on Awingu: Simpler Citrix alternative
From and enterprise perspective Citrix is very inexpensive compared to most other VDI platforms. It's not that hard to maintain and keep a farm running well if you limit your application deployment to me office and run your weird stuff on small app specific farms.
mgiampapa··on Google outage – resolved
Gmail is currently returning "550 5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist" for many valid gmail addresses.
mgiampapa··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
It's not, because it makes them a bucket of money. Only in hindsight with an FTC in the final days of a mercurial administration do we get stuff like this.
mgiampapa··on Dropbox saved $75M over two years by building its own infrastructure (2018)
Some of it is becoming more democratized too. Facebook as an example open sources it's datacenter design, it's servers, switches etc. I know they are the big bad for privacy these days, but the OCP project has contributed state of the art datacenter tech that legacy providers should be jumping at.
mgiampapa··on So you want to buy a farm?
The sweet spot is when you have passions about products, expensive things or impractical crops to scale... We have a homestead with acreage in Hawaii. Chickens and eggs are zero effort. We don't even need to feed them, just collect the eggs. We grow heirloom tomatoes in the greenhouse because they are crazy expensive to ship from the mainland and we love them. Likewise, we also grow a lot of white pineapples because they are amazing, but not commercially viable to ship... There are lots of small scale / high margin areas to work in, you just need to explore and find them. You won't build a business empire, but you can find a lot of satisfaction.
mgiampapa··on The New Facebook Design Sucks
New Zealand gets almost everything first. It's the ideal test market for FB to trial new features that mimic's it's primary revenue generating users in the USA and EMEA.
mgiampapa··on Airbnb announces confidential submission of draft Registration Statement
The timing probably has more to do with expiring options than it specifically does around strength of the market or the business.
mgiampapa··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
This is where Google will shoot itself in the foot trying to kill ad blockers and 3rd party extensions like paywall removers. Firefox is more than good enough, and if you take away uBlock and others that have a loyal following users are going to bail.

The fact that I can run extensions on Firefox for Android is a huge enough win that it's my default system browser.

mgiampapa··on YouTube actively deletes anti CCP comments
I wouldn't be surprised if Google's algo has some idea of how toxic a person you are based on your previous comments.

That said, I wouldn't be shocked if every comment Palmer Lucky makes is shadow-banned.

mgiampapa··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
I wouldn't judge them too softly, they did after all promote having an internal services food team for years and virtue signaled all over the place that they wanted them to be team members and not contractors like every other tech company (they got stock, sick days, vacation, benefits etc), then fired them all over Christmas break one year and replaced them with contractors.

mgiampapa··on NextDNS is my new favourite DNS service
PiHole at it's core is easy access to a bunch of blocklists. Why not just run a local resolver and import the blocklists if your usecase is mobile and you don't want to vpn your traffic?
mgiampapa··on How airlines plan to make billions from rewards cards
Yea, I think I may live in a different world. I live on a small island in a smallish town. I routinely do thousands of dollars in business at a time either in cash because I have a relationship with that person or by check with a local bank.

Your reputation is worth more than anything else in a small community. If you start ripping people off its known very very quickly and scammers end up moving away, or just get well known enough that nobody sane does business with them. Eventually bad enough apples get encouraged by the local brutha's to stop being a problem or have their limbs broken.

mgiampapa··on How airlines plan to make billions from rewards cards
As a matter of course I just ask if there is a cash discount. Frequently there is. If it beats 2% I almost always take it.

I've always wondered if these cash transactions even make it onto the books, I suspect that many of them are not only merchant fee free, but also untaxed.

mgiampapa··on Why Is Facebook Not in the Cloud Business?
Zuck has said as much at all hands meetings.

If the growth knobs were turned off across all it's products and spare capacity became a thing, then it might make sense, but at the rate they are building there is no purpose to being a middle man.

Make a code optimization and save 1-2% of CPU on the web tier and you will be a hero.
