mgarfias··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
cast iron mafia here - though I do have a nice set of copper cored all clad pots and pans.
mgarfias··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
we had something about that tier - a dewalt. I watched my wife struggle with it, trying to hold square while building cabinets. It was so frustrating to me just watching her, that two years ago I went and bought her a nice saw stop deal. It cost me about $3k, but the fence holds square, its easy to adjust, quiet, and it just works.

mgarfias··on Blood pressure control should focus on more potassium (2023)
I’m on three meds still, but generally run ~ 120/80. My K levels are now 4.3 mmol/L. Much better than the low 3s I had before.

During the work up I had to drink 18g/day of the foulest liquid ever to get my K levels high enough for the adrenal vein sampling to be valid.

mgarfias··on Blood pressure control should focus on more potassium (2023)
Holy shit, me too.
mgarfias··on Is this the slow decline of the Apple "cult"?
I’m just waiting for an alternative. I’d happy run a *nix on my desktop if I didn’t have to use X11 and could have real apps to run.

I’m about to be forced to use windows for the first time in 20 years and I’m seriously dreading it.

At the same time, I’m sick of apples stranglehold on the iPhone. It’s my phone, let me do what I want with it.

I’ve tried using android stuff a bit (bought a Samsung tablet for obd2 stuff), and it left me wanting to scream and throw things.

I miss my 04-08 Mac experience that didn’t suck. And don’t tell me the new stuff is more reliable - the other day I had to power cycle my m1max mbp as the keyboard stopped responding.

mgarfias··on It took my savings and 14 years but I’m about to beat arthritis
Until I started doing things to help my knees, the stuff I was doing, that I covered with NSAIDs actively made things worse.

I’ve had osteoarthritis in my knees since I was 16. At 27 I was opened up and told I had worn grooves through the cartilage and into the bone (I guess that’s why it hurt to ride a bike).

Doc told me quite literally to sit on a couch. Instead I took up karate, and the enforced stretching there relieved a ton of the pain. It didn’t fix anything, and i’d still get knee pain when riding a bike (I cut way back) or running, but my every day experience was tolerable.

In the past few years I started going to a functional fitness gym, and our coach got me towing a sled backwards- THAT fixed up my knees. Something about it has let my knees repair, and I haven’t had knees that felt this good sinc3 at least 1990.

mgarfias··on It took my savings and 14 years but I’m about to beat arthritis
Beef: it’s a pain killer, not a fix.
mgarfias··on What are the Olympics shooting competitors wearing on their faces?
We use tape over the left eye of my youngest’s eye pro when he’s shooting a rifle. He’s cross eye dominant and scotch tape on the glasses is cheaper than a left handed rifle.
mgarfias··on What are the Olympics shooting competitors wearing on their faces?
You need to take a pistol class from Shrek (sob tactical). He will change your way of thinking about your eyes and shooting
mgarfias··on Electric chainsaws and the gorge of misery
I’ve got 5 acres of forest, and occasionally have to use my saw… heavily.

There is no way I’d put up with battery powered, as when I’ve having to run the saw I’m cleaning up whole trees falling over, cutting in to rounds for splitting, and occasionally doing a bad job of slabbing some maple for the wife’s wood shop.

I’ve got a 5hp husky, that always seems to start unlike my previous stihl, and I’m pretty happy with it.

But I’m not really going to be happy until I have a fusion powered saw.

mgarfias··on Perfect NAS Solution
That was my initial thought too. I clicked hoping for some new chassis/hardware that would make things easier.

Like maybe a rack mounted low power quad core with lots of memory slots, 6 or so 3.5” spinny slots, and some hot swap nvme bays for an affordable price.

I dont need exotic hw, I just want the ability to have some big slow storage mixed with some fast storage.

My current set is a 1U atom setup with an esas card hooked up to a 1U drive shelf. With dual bonded 10gbps uplink.

mgarfias··on Ask HN: How are you finding the job market in July 2024?
I’m getting interviews. But the one offer I got was extremely low balled. Like 50k under previous salary and no equity. During the process I found out that execs got equity, but not the peons.

Giant ass red flag.

OTOH: I’m getting more attention than I was in 2001-2.

mgarfias··on Dear Safari, Things I Hate About You
I don’t. I’m only applying my “inside” knowledge of the org I was at there in the orchard. It I can extrapolate to the rest of the greater orgs and company as a whole due to the nature of the internal propaganda and the clear financial signals.

The best incentive I’ve ever had wasn’t financial. It was having an incredible boss whom I DID NOT WANT TO DISAPPOINT.

mgarfias··on Dear Safari, Things I Hate About You
I've seen under the apple skirt, and the incentive structure there is such that these issues are inevitable. You get more RSUs and promotions when you make something new, and not when you make something simpler and more robust.
mgarfias··on Why many studies wrongly claim it's healthy to drink a little alcohol
What about an AQI of ~1500? Yeah, we lived through that here 4 years ago during the fires here in Oregon, while waiting to find out if we’d told to evac.

mgarfias··on Ask HN: Should I remove work experience from resume?
i didnt prune per se, but I did make anything more than about 10 years old a one liner that said where i was, the position, and dates. That shrank the ol resume down from 3 pages, and made it much more readable. Downside, i can't talk about the startup that actually exited successfully.
mgarfias··on Creatine improves physical function and body composition in older adults
dude, my endocrine system is fucked. Im diabetic, have only one adrenal gland now, and have the T levels of a 90yro man unless i stick myself once a week.
