metta2uall··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
I don't think Epic is trying to force their store to be installed by default or to be able to bypass existing iOS sandbox/security mechanisms? So you can continue using the Apple App Store exclusively and reject apps that don't offer Apple Pay?
metta2uall··on Windows XP source code has leaked
Would be interesting if it can actually be compiled into a usable ISO - possible implications for digital preservation.

metta2uall··on Show HN: Recipe nutrition calculator focusing on micronutrients
Wow, this is incredibly impressive!

Is there somewhere to report bugs and feedback? It's scraped https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/seitan-black-bean-stir-f... quite well but a few items like "seitanpieces" and "cornflour" did not get recognised. Also, increasing the weight of the seitan is not updating the nutritional values.

This sort of extreme cruel exploitation of living beings with brains & feelings will be thought of in the future similarly to how we think about chattel slavery.. At least the next step in the industrialisation of meat should be a huge improvement - just growing brain-less muscles..
metta2uall··on Every Day 10k People Die Due to Air Pollution from Fossil Fuels
In Australia new renewables plus storage are already cheaper than new coal or nuclear.

metta2uall··on Every Day 10k People Die Due to Air Pollution from Fossil Fuels
I really hope 4th gen succeeds since in high-population areas without much land for wind/solar it's badly needed. However the fact it's taking so long suggests there are serious challenges. For example, there is the neat idea of a fail-safe freeze-plug to stop a damaged molten salt reactor - but what happens next? The corrosive nuclear fuel needs to be safely contained for a long time or safely removed for re-processing.
metta2uall··on Air pollution is worse than we thought
Indeed it is difficult and requires massive investment.

Storage options include pumped hydro, a proven technology for long durations, and some analysis like that done by Australia's national science agency is already finding that: "wind, solar and storage technologies are by far the cheapest form of low carbon options for Australia, and are likely to dominate the global energy mix in coming decades." https://reneweconomy.com.au/new-csiro-aemo-study-confirms-wi...

100% renewable is not really required and I think it's not so bad to use some fossil gas on occasion. In the future it may actually be renewable-generated hydrogen.

For countries with more population and less land it'll be more difficult to find room for massive wind/solar so I certainly hope the challenges with next-generation nuclear get solved soon as well..

metta2uall··on TikTok Tracked User Data Using Tactic Banned by Google
Where people are directing their attention is mostly publicly available. For example what's "trending" on social media, what posts have a lot of likes, Twitter/Facebook profiles, the contents of popular TV shows & YouTube channels, opinion polls.
metta2uall··on TikTok Tracked User Data Using Tactic Banned by Google
Not good of them, but doesn't seem like a national security threat either..

I haven't used TikTok much but the material there seems quite innocuous so I don't see how Chinese government access to data from it is a serious threat. There seems to be a lot more potentially embarrassing material posted to FB & Twitter, and I suspect the Chinese government & others are scooping up what they can, at least what's posted publicly.

metta2uall··on EPA to Rescind Methane Regulations for Oil and Gas
The majority of politicians and voters didn't do enough to heed scientific warnings & prepare for an upcoming pandemic.. Similarly, we are not doing enough to mitigate climate change. Unfortunately the consequences will likely be much worse if we don't learn the lesson quickly..

I think the assumption that anything with a brain can experience pain, suffering and happiness is a pretty safe one. Synthesising information to decide what is suffering and happiness, and then trying to maximise happiness, seems to be one of the basic functions of any brain.
metta2uall··on Flutter for Linux
That's really cool but I think all text, such as "Please enter only alphabetical characters", should be selectable. For example someone may want to copy & paste it into a bug report.
metta2uall··on SUSE to Acquire Rancher Labs
This sounds really good. Rancher has some cool products but to be honest I've been uneasy about the link of their name to cattle farming. I hope they change the name and continue the focus on bringing more efficiency to Kubernetes. For example I don't think the kubelet of a brand-new almost empty Kubernetes cluster should frequently be using 4% of a CPU doing who-knows-what.. (I've tried profiling it but with little luck - most time seems to be on futexes [for go channels?], and there are also heaps of system calls to gather data from cgroups).
metta2uall··on CUDA 11.0
Yes - I would think drivers are even harder from an engineering point of view but as far as I know they have fairly good backwards compatibility for games. I think this is likely because people would be much more reluctant to buy new graphics cards if they broke their older games.
metta2uall··on Oppose the Earn IT Act
Whether traditional search warrants or breaking end-to-end encryption violates privacy more really depends on specific cases and the details of how the end-to-end encryption gets broken. Search warrants definitely aim to seize communications and intrude into private notes, collections, offline-only meetings, affairs, and all kinds of potentially embarrassing bedroom items that were purchased anonymously.

The only real defence against government abuse is strengthening democratic institutions, respect for human rights, strong oversight, transparency etc.. End-to-end encryption is quite a shallow/weak protection since a truly tyrannical government can easily make it illegal at any time. A lot of government abuse is also possible without breaking encryption.

So I think the benefit of end-to-end encryption in protecting against abusive governments is often over-stated. But what about the costs? For example technological progress is making the world more dangerous. Should it be easy for a bunch of people to use unbreakable encryption to coordinate the development extremely dangerous genetically engineered bio-weapons from their homes? If one such person is caught should it be really impossible for 5 judges to allow the police to find all those they've been talking to?

metta2uall··on Oppose the Earn IT Act
But YouTube Live is publicly accessible, it's not the same as a law enforcement warrant. I think a better analogy is whether it should be okay for a judge to allow police officers to storm into your private residence with only a few seconds warning, and then proceed to examine and even take away anything in your room.

Given the harm caused by cybercrime, plus the increased police work, governments really ought to make a minimum duration of security updates mandatory.. Phones are already required to meet a raft of various regulations.

metta2uall··on Pinebook Pro, First Impressions

metta2uall··on Relationship between psychedelics, the brain, well-being, and creativity
Thanks, that's interesting. Buddhist meditation aims to give similar insights but apparently goes even deeper & is more sustainable long-term. Lots of at least anecdotal evidence that this is really useful. The "downside" is the learning curve & initial difficulty..
metta2uall··on Why we have so many problems with our teeth
According to the Linus Pauling Institute, Vitamin K2 is found most plentifully in certain non-animal fermented foods, cheeses (no mention of them having to be 'raw'), and animal liver, rather than animal fat in general.

https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/vitamins/vitamin-K

It seems animal (and human) fat doesn't store much Vitamin K which is why a steady dietary supply is necessary.

Also did ancient societies have higher average lifespans than today? I don't quite understand claims ancient people were healthier.. Of course modern lifestyles have severe inadequacies, but it's complex, and for example many Japanese have quite long life spans despite eating a lot of rice.

metta2uall··on Dissection of COVIDSafe (Android): Australian government's contact tracing app
IMHO, the fact that they app is unobfuscated and can thus be easily decompiled is even better than released source code since one can't be sure that the released source code truly matches the actual build in the app store (unless they also go to the effort of having 'reproducible builds' - which would be quite impressive).

Also it's good to keep in perspective that the 'government' can already track people to a great extent, e.g. via cell towers and face recognition.
