For the vast majority of projects it seems like the disadvantages of these highly complex RPC systems far exceed the benefits... Not just in terms of security but also the reduced observability compared to simple JSON..
The creators of Maa Ka Doodh, a famous documentary about the dairy industry in India have alleged that their channel has been deleted under false pretenses. [1]
Does YouTube really delete channels globally, even at a government's request?
I think you're at least partially right - not everything but a lot of data is not useful - wasting money, bandwidth, electricity, etc. There should be more dynamic controls over what gets logged/filtered at the client-side..
We're stuffed because of a broken economic system where these companies can get away without paying for the externality costs of damaging our environment.. If only "Conservative" politicians would actually care about conserving our environment!
And of course the costs do not affect everyone equally, especially in the short term - the people living in these areas tend to already be poor - like in Memphis were Musk's xAI seems to have turned on gas power without permits & controls.[0] Conveniently for xAI, Musk has also enthusiastically gutted the EPA.
I have a lot of admiration for the WSL1-style approaches & hope they bear fruit. The major problem with WSL2 & Android VMs is that they're a pain in an already virtualised environment - there's then a need for nested virtualisation.
I'm still happily using an 8GB M1 running Firefox in OSX + Firefox/VSCode/NodeJS in a Debian VM. Lots of tabs open. Both OSX and Debian can use compressed RAM.
The vast majority of people can meet all their nutritional needs with peas & other vegan foods. Plus, the extra calories & cholesterol in eggs is actually detrimental to many people's health. Peas also have beneficial nutrients like fibre which is absent in eggs.
Do you realise how much more energy is required for commercial egg production compared to peas? Plus peas aren't given antibiotics. And whisking an egg is also a processing stage.
I'd love to use this but a key problem seems to be that they don't get updated as soon as a security fix is released, which for browser engines is quite often...
For now veganism is outside the Overton window but this is changing, and it needs to, because it's actually much better & cheaper than ovo-lacto vegetarianism even via a "better" commercial farm - they still get rid of the newly born males, they usually get rid of the older "less productive" females, feeding animals is still an inefficient use of land & energy, and cows still generate methane..
I also use an 8GB M1. It has firefox with many tabs & windows open in OSX and also a Linux VM in UTM which is running VSCode, vite, and another firefox with lots of tabs. It's performing well! (although swap is currently at 2.3GB, and there's a further 3.5GB of compressed data in RAM)
I think this short video explains a lot - basically the establishment Democrats look after their donors & don't do much for everyday people who are struggling economically - hence the appeal of Donald Trump who promises to shake things up & generates hope - for many voters this "trumps" his bad qualities
"8K video recording" - does anyone really need this? Seems like for negligible gain in quality people are pushed to sacrifice their storage & battery, and so upgrade their hardware sooner...
It's very likely much much safer & more effective to boost BDNF, neurogenesis, etc, by doing exercise, eating healthily, sleeping healthily, learning new things, etc...
To get serious about cybersecurity governments need to start imposing hefty fines for failing security reviews, otherwise companies choose to maximise profit. This includes fining software vendors for 0-days, depending on their size and the severity of the 0-day. For example, a critical 0-day in a popular Microsoft/Google/Apple product should cost them e.g. $100 million. This will actually get them to allocate significant engineering time to preventing 0-days instead of working on the latest gimmicky features...
Isn't it a fault of systemd that libsystemd had a dependency on libxz? (because it implements too many things). It should have been possible to add the notification functionality using a tiny libsystemd-notify.
A problem I had was my grandma's phone battery running out. I made a little Android app that sent the battery level to an API which then put it into a storage bucket so I could see it remotely.
