metachris··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
The strong point of Electron is easy _cross-platform_ application development and packaging (spits out .exe, .app and Linux binary), with no further dependencies. Ever tried packaging a QT application for Mac, Windows and Linux? I can tell you it's a painful experience, one I don't want to repeat.

Also HTML+CSS allows for extremely versatile styling and fine-grained control of appearance.

The developers moved to MariaDB, which is what everyone uses nowadays anyway rather than MySQL.
metachris··on Learn web development: Django Web Framework
This is so true. Point in case - Instagram also runs on Django!
metachris··on KeepassXC – A cross-platform community fork of KeepassX
Syncing can be achieved by placing the password file in Dropbox or Google Drive.

Also you have search and don't expose the other passwords as you would in a textfile. There is pretty good apps for Keepass, which offer a Keepass Keyboard so you don't need to use the clipboard (which can be read by any app on Android for instance).
metachris··on Ask HN: Should I blog on Medium for my open-source project, or self-host?
yes, see here: https://github.com/metachris/jekyll-boilerplate/blob/master/...
metachris··on Ask HN: Should I blog on Medium for my open-source project, or self-host?
I recommend a static generator such as Jekyll [1]. If you want a boilerplate to get up and running quickly, i've put the source of my blog [2] on Github: https://github.com/metachris/jekyll-boilerplate

Thanks for sharing!

Do I interpret your numbers correctly in that with the $100 budget and about $5 per lead, you generated just 20 leads, of which about 7 finally bought the book?

metachris··on We’re trying to stop bad mosquitoes by raising and releasing good ones

Looks like they mate with females, which still lay eggs, but the won't hatch. So less bad bugs mate and produce offspring. Needs large numbers of good bugs though.

It's top of HN because a lot of people find a physical/technical introduction interesting...
metachris··on How to steal a developer's local database

A good place to start is an Arduino [1], and connect a button, sensors, actuators to play with.

When you want to move more into networking, step up to the Raspberry Pi [2], which runs Linux and also includes digital GPIO pins.

metachris··on Qpm: A package manager for Qt
Is there a list of packages where I can see what could be installed?

metachris··on Thread pools: How do I use them?
I recently ran into the issue that the multiprocessing.pool.ThreadPool class is not cancellable in Python 2. It seems that only in Python 3 can you exit a ThreadPool with eg. a KeyboardInterrupt before all tasks are finished.

Since then I've been using this code, which works great across all platforms and Python versions: https://github.com/metachris/pdfx/blob/master/pdfx/threadpoo...

They should all work well with Gmail, since it's the most popular recipient, and all popular solutions have deliverability statistics. I'd guess that using Gmail itself via its SMTP service [1] would be the most reliable overall.
