mercurialuser··on Tell HN: Uceprotect is extorting website owners
I was reviewing uceprotect policies a couple of hours ago and what you say is really strange.

Uce level 3 should never be used alone to block general tcp traffic.

Are you saying that Orange is using uce level 3 to block email sent from your DO vm? Are you really sure that Orange blocks for this list only? Is it possible that your ip is on another RBL?

If Orange is really blocking smtp based only on uce level 3 they are doing wrong: their system may be mis-configured or they have not read correctly hiw level 3 is populated.

Or - probably - they did on pourpose!

Today I checked september smtp traffic: almost 99% of traffic coming from uce level 1 (single ips) was spam. Traffic hitting level 2 but not present in level 1 (subnets, one I checked was /15!!) was also 99% spam.

Of the 5000k messages received, very few arrived into the mailboxes. A lot of messages were blocked by following spam checks and the few remaining were flagged as spam.

I feel your pain. If you host on DO and you send email, you should look for a email provider that will funnel your emails.

Ps: i repeat, email shoild not be bloocked only by uce level 3

mercurialuser··on Planes With Same Call Sign at PHX – one departing, one arriving
No, one is 42, the other one is 41 or 43, usually.
mercurialuser··on Pizza, pasta, potatoes, protein – how Italian children became so overweight
I'm over 50. I played in the streets whole afternoons, full days during school vacations. They were dangerous years in Rome, terrorism, political violence, heroin everywhere.

Despite we are now living in safer years, no kids are playing in the streets anymore. Also in the nearby park, they struggle to reach a 5 vs 5 football (soccer) match when we had plenty more for a 11 vs 11.

A prominent psycologist just released an interview: why do italian parents love Sinner, the tennis player, praise his capabilities, his energy and willingness to train, but accept that their kids spend hours sitting on the couch playing games or browsing socials?

I also agree with you about local, family owned shops: in my area there were 2 supermarkets and they were far away. Now there are at least 6 and one is less than 300mt from my house. The family shops are still operating and thriving, but some have changed, adding locally pre-cooked food to the old offer.

So, less sport, more easily available junk food, more parents working late to keep supers open so more use of pre cooked food, more time spent on social media... a explosive mix

You may compile .prg files with Harbour, an open source Clipper clone compiler, on github.

Strange it is not cited in the post.

Have a look at harbour project on github. It compiles Clipper code to be run on several different platforms, in text and gui mode (also with Qt bindings) and mow there are several frameworks for web development

mercurialuser··on How to run latest Vegas Pro 22 in Windows 7 x64
Da vinci is great software but for long time vegas users it is not easy to adapt. I tried several times and failed. I used to edit a couple of my daughter theatrical performance with up to 5 cameras and wanted to use da vinci for its "sync-with-audio" feature and easier color correction for the various, different cameras.

I also use 2 pc to edit with vegas, with project and video on an external usb3 disk, moving it from home to office. It is not so easy with da vinci that uses an external database: doable but not easy.

mercurialuser··on The World Of dBASE (1984) [video]
Yes. Going back to the top or confirming tha data when exiting the last field was a setting. You may have multiple commands on one row but you have to separate them with a ;
mercurialuser··on The World Of dBASE (1984) [video]
You can still compile dbase/Clipper programs with Harbour, github hosted, open source, Clipper 5.2 compatible compiler that runs almost everywhere, from native windows 64 bit to mac, raspberry, linux, embedded appliances, anywhere there is a c compiler available.

The language has been slightly expanded and with external libraries you may have gui programs (win32, qt, gtk) l, connect to databases (sqlite, mariadb,postgres...) create PDF, excel files.

I have a program started in 1986 on dbase III, then ported to Clipper and now to Harbour...

mercurialuser··on Bridge to Sicily: a strategic project for Italy or a waste of resources?
oh, yes.

Strait of Messina, as is called that part of the mediterranean sea, is really really busy, with a lot of maritime traffic.

Some researchers pointed out that the planned height of the bridge from the sea level is not enough for the biggest ships

mercurialuser··on Bridge to Sicily: a strategic project for Italy or a waste of resources?
It's a telluric area--- sicily and the continent are moving and their distance increases some centimeters every year.

Also look for "messina earthquake" year 1908, between 75000 and 82000 people died.

It is a "trophy" for some politician... so no, it's not an easy task.

mercurialuser··on I Stopped Using Kubernetes. Our DevOps Team Is Happier Than Ever
We have 3 cluster, prod, dev, test with a few pod each.

Each cluster is wasting tons of cpu and i/o bandwidth just to be idle. I was told that it is etcd doing thousands i/o per second and this is normal.

mercurialuser··on Iron Mountain: It's Time to Talk About Hard Drives
There are several articles about film preservation in digital format. Every X years all the data is "upgraded", from LTOn to LTOn+1 or +2.

So it may sound like a sales pitch but I consider it more a warning notice

mercurialuser··on Project Hammer: reduce collusion in the Canadian grocery sector
Your past data shows you sell 100 apples every day, despite the cost. Then it shows that you may sell other 100 if the price is considered "low" by the clients or 30 if the price is "high". Then you know how many are in stocks, from how many days, and how many are arriving. And you fix the price accordingly
mercurialuser··on History of the Italian electrical system
I live in that part of Rome where we have 2 phases and no neutral.

I discovered being electrocuted and I could not understand why.

Fortunately heat pumps, "stupid" car chargers and other appliances work with no problems. But an installer told me that I could have had problems with smart car chargers and he refused to do the work.

Also Shelleys seem to work.

It can be to make space for script changes: you may overwrite the first bytes of the script.

Or just add some laziness.

mercurialuser··on Self-published Ansible book – 87k copies, 300k revenue, 41 revisions
Someone told me that our public facing dns server running bind has 3800+ days of uptime and despite bind is up to date, the Linux version is really old... it's running on a dl360 g4 server. Since they also proposed to have a different master/slave configuration my idea was to use ansible to have all the stuff reproducible. Then packer seemed to be necessary, then started to look at some more complex configurations and found that in many cases you just create gigantic bash script that apply the configurations. So I should go to my wiki page with all the commands to create my server and transform them into a script that I should test several times. Ok if you have 100s of identical servers, but when you have just 4?

But you need to create: 1. A Custom vm image, so how do you do it?

2. A container: here is a bit simpler since you may use docer-compose...

mercurialuser··on The Ugly Truth Behind “We Buy Ugly Houses”
I spent 1 month in Australia and my daughter 6. Hiring ads are on almost every shops or business activities, so - probably - those 715.000 workers are necessary.

Giving them a decent house for living is another problem

My daughter is studying in Sydney. Her bus does change itinerary during school times: it makes a longer journey to onboard students.

mercurialuser··on Ask HN: How do you guard against ransomeware? (offsite backups not possible)
I've been thinking about this very problem recently.

My solution for an air-gapped backup is a linux server with no exposed ports, no daemons running.

A cron job starts a scp that copies data into a directory named as the date.

If you want you can expand using zfs with snapshots, compress, deduplicate.

Or if you have the money, buy a data domain or similar appliance and set it with immutable backups (nobody can delete them) and double password for any destructive operations. You can set it up as a tape with fiber channel or with ddboost, other ways to create a air gap

mercurialuser··on Ask HN: What do you use VMs for regularly?
If the software is FEL, an open source time-tabling software, you can run the gui-less executable. I did it in Linux on a 30× core server, starting 30+ processes.

Edit: read the other answers. In FEL you can specify hard and soft constraints. Search can be long nonetheless...
