meowster··on Massachusetts 'Reviewing' Kei Car Ban After Uproar over Canceled Registrations
> blind spots on cars

"Believe it or not, some drivers point their side mirrors inward — so they see only their own cars — instead of rotating them outward" [2].

Blind spots are self-induced. I've never driven a consumer vehicle where I couldn't adjust my mirrors properly to get rid of blindspots.

meowster··on Logitech F710 gamepad, allegedly contributed to Titan submersible implosion
Pretty good video if anyone wants to watch it all the way through, otherwise the Xbox controller part starts at 8:38.
meowster··on I made a tool that finds available .com domains for your products
I have a dozen domain name generators bookmarked, half of which are actually pretty decent, and they're all free.

I'm not going to pay period, but I'm especially not going to pay without seeing how good it is first.

meowster··on Police can't stop sideshows. Solution: Make the streets more annoying
> but they don't stop maniac drivers showing off.

but they probably don't increase maniac drivers showing off either.

In my neighborhood, some a**.... did donuts in a regular four-way stop intersection. In a previous neighborhood, another a**.... burned rubber on a regular straigh road.

meowster··on Robocars improve traffic even when most cars around them are driven by people
I think it's plausible. I believe a lot of traffic would disappear if people drove the same speed. I do a lot of highway driving and use cruise control, and I see lots of cars go faster, then slow down, then go faster, then slow down, etc, causing more lane changes and probably annoying other drivers. Lane changes takes up two spaces and causes others to slow down creating a domino effect.

Traffic is one of those things where if everyone else looked out for each other, waited their turn, let people merge, etc, then everyone would get to their destinations sooner.

meowster··on Paper straws are often touted as alternative to plastic, but they're toxic
There's quite a difference with your example than the exchange you were replying to.

(For what it's worth, I have no problem with people wanting to accessorize their bodies with lipstick. I don't see beauty in those things, but I have no problem with others seeing beauty that way. Ultimately it is a choice though, as people can also decide to be beautiful through their grace, words, actions, etc; not what some company tells them they need.)

meowster··on Paper straws are often touted as alternative to plastic, but they're toxic
Do you mean people want a straw if they want to wear lipstick and want to not ruin its application?

meowster··on Myspace celebrates its 21st birthday. Do we still need it?
I am interested in seeing something like the original MySpace. I'm not very active on it, but there is subreply.com (formerly sublevel) that made the HN frontpage a couple of times in the past.
meowster··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
Tapes/stickers are relatively easy to bypass without being evident.
meowster··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
> As long as you don't damage anything when opening up electronics

Considering the nature of hard drives, I think that would fall under damage caused by opening.

My understanding is that they are not in a vacuum, but they are super-clean. The air/gas inside is an important part by preventing the read/write head from touching the platters as they rotate. If a consumer opens it up, then dust is introduced which will cause problems.

meowster··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
Just a friendly reminder for everyone: in the United States, companies cannot legally void your warranty for removing "warranty void if removed" stickers or similar (like wax seals).

Companies can only void the warranty on specific items that you damage. As long as you don't damage anything when opening up electronics, ask them to put in writing why they are voiding your warranty (chances are they'll "help you just this one time" instead).

The FTC is finally cracking down on companies that use such warnings.

(Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act - same law that lets you or third parties do work on your vehicles without voiding the manufacturer warranty.)

meowster··on Los Angeles Unified School District will ban cellphones from school day in 2025
I'm sensing some kind of (sad) irony here.
meowster··on Los Angeles Unified School District will ban cellphones from school day in 2025
The ability for a phone to give away a victim's location to the perpetrator as well as encourage parents to get in the way of first responders.
meowster··on High-pressure youth sports is bad for America
I'm a Scoutmaster (USA). It is disheartening to see kids and their parents give up Scouting to in order to attend practices or games. Some do it because they think they'll have a better chance at scholarships (they won't), the rest I'm not sure. I played sports and did Scouting when I was a kid, and I got a lot more out of Scouting.

I have a nephew who played baseball his whole life, whose parents sunk tens of thousands of dollars in training, tournaments, etc. He got one partial scholarship that would never amount to the money they spent, and he gave that scholarship up after a year to transfer to another university where he would have more playing time, and it's unlikely he is going to be picked up.

Somehow my sports never interfered with my troop meetings or campouts, but I can't say the same for the Scouts in my troop.

Was it a contractual arrangement? They just have to front the money until they sue the company; they're suing as they're looking for new jobs right?

It sounds like the journalist(?) was in a tough spot, because it sounds like he either had to out his source which which journalists don't seem to be keen on doing, or leave it up.

How many future potential sources are going to go to him or avoid him now?

meowster··on Ask HN: What are some iconic comments on HN?
The volatility of voting on my comment seems like an explanation is deserved:

Here's a different SR-71 pilot saying it's probably not true: https://old.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/xis19w/reddits_be...

There was another thread that had a larger discussion as to additional holes in the story, but Google is not as good as it once was.

meowster··on Ask HN: What are some iconic comments on HN?
The original story doesn't pass the smell test, but it's fun and hard to disprove.

Sled Driver is a great book for anyone looking for something to read. Physical copies sell for the hundreds of dollars, but there is a PDF floating on the high seas.

meowster··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
I never paid them, but used to receive their mailers.

I once called them to stop sending me mailers, and they said they'll stop for two years, I said no, stop forever.

I took my vehicle to a place that sold my information to SiriusXM and they resumed the mailers.

But this time... I just created an account on their website and changed my address to their headquarters and phone number to their phone number. They can spam themselves for all I care!

(I've done this with other businesses that don't respect their potential customers with great success! Often the people I speak with don't seem to recognize it when I give them their company's address or the 800-number that I called them at.)

meowster··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars in 2024?
What's illegal about a low-tech (aka "dumb") electric car? Is there a law that requires connectivity, or for manufacturers to abuse that connectivity?
meowster··on DeGoogling 2024: Replacing Photos, Gmail, and Search
Their Android App appears to be an online-only web-something in an app wrapper. As long as I have a signal, I've been pretty happy with it.
meowster··on DeGoogling 2024: Replacing Photos, Gmail, and Search
In my de-Googling process, I switched to Fastmail. I think they have a pretty good email, calendar, contacts, and notes interface.

It has a quick and easy Gmail importer. I also gave it access to my Gmail account to pull emails whenever someone emails my old email so I can let them know I switched emails. All I get now from my old gmail account is spam, but I'm holding on for at least another year to make sure I don't miss anything or anyone who hasn't updated my address. (I use a personal domain so I won't have such problems in the future if I change providers.)

meowster··on Microsoft will switch off Recall by default after security backlash
I think OP forgot the quotes around "accidentally". You're right it won't be a true accident; it will be intentional and just called an "accident".
