meowster··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Not on my phone.

(Pixel 8 Pro, Firefox)

meowster··on Passport Photos
I was expecting some kind of article about an issue with passport photos or some kind of exploit, maybe photoshopping so it looks like the person but fools automatic facial recognition...

but was pleasantly surprised instead.

meowster··on [dead]
Inaccurate title.

Actual title: "German Coalition Government Collapses"

meowster··on Bitcoin has made a new all-time high price
Then why does Coinbase lock accounts of people to transfer to darknet markets or such?

If you had the choice of receiving BTC from a brand new minted batch, or from a darknet market, which would you prefer? If you have a preference, then they do not have the same value.

I would value BTC from a darknet market less because of risks associated with spending it.

I would value freshly-minted BTC because it doesn't have any question about its providence.

meowster··on New images of Jupiter
> us poor conscious beings who find joy in being alive and actually have the capacity to marvel, because it is marvellous that we can, and we should.

> And I care that it is us who inhabits the earth, and not slugs.

That's not mutually exclusive with the comment you were replying to.

I agree with both of your comments except for your opinion that the first comment is "edgy cynism" and "juvenile".

meowster··on Bitcoin has made a new all-time high price
If Bitcoin can be traced (which it can), then it isn't fungible.
meowster··on The Confusing State of RCS
I didn't see OP write that at all. You should also re-read the HN guidelines.
meowster··on The Confusing State of RCS
Three people; otherwise it should be, "They went to Oregon with a cook, and Betty, a maid."

Or better yet: "They went to Oregon with a cook, and maid named Betty."

meowster··on Electric vehicles now represent 19% of the passenger vehicle sales worldwide
I'm looking forward to the new Ramcharger (new plug-in hybrid truck, not the old SUV). Hopefully Stellantis gets its act together.
meowster··on The motor turns too much
Data point: some ICE vehicles now have settings to turn creep on or off.

meowster··on Hacking the T2S+ Out of Fear: Get Lock-In Thermography for Free
Can we at least update the ITAR restrictions now, so we can get better resolutions and framerates?

Can anyone from FLIR lobby on this?

meowster··on FDA Permits Marketing of Digital Game to Improve Attention in ADHD Children (2020)
It looks like the adult version which doesn't require a prescription has in-game purchases (Google Play subscription?), so assuming it was bought that way, it seems like it wouldn't be restricted to one device. I can see the kid version being restricted if they only sell prescriptions outside of the Play Store.

I wonder what the difference is between the adult and kid versions, just the prescription requirement maybe?

meowster··on FDA Permits Marketing of Digital Game to Improve Attention in ADHD Children (2020)
The "adult verson" looks like it has the same 30 second commercial, is OTC (no prescription-needed), and is only $130/year or $25 for just one month.

meowster··on Chain-of-thought can hurt performance on tasks where thinking makes humans worse
Think long; think wrong

( Flows off the tongue better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

meowster··on The Art of Stealing (2013)
Too bad I can't reply to any of the comments in that thread. I'm guessing old threads are locked to prevent spam? Perhaps they can be "thawed" for a short time if a mod links to it in a situation like this.
meowster··on Google is getting even worse for independent sites
Program some bots that use ChatGPT to answer questions by summarizing your website, and maybe 5% (or less to look less spamy) of the responses have a link to the corresponding blog post?

Maybe create a subreddit for your niche location/topic?

It absolutely sucks, but this might be one way to allow people to find your content.

meowster··on Who Do Children Belong To?
Reunification therapy sounds like it might be a First Amendment (U.S.A. Constitution) violation since you generally cannot compel actions or speech, especially thoughts.

The author writes that, "many more Americans are being forced to have children. Legally, these laws serve to make having children a requirement, not a choice." That seems like a disingenuous oversimplification. Americans are not being forced to have children; they are just required not to abort children that are the consequences of actions they chose to take (sex), assuming they weren't raped (and thus had no choice).

I do agree with the author that children seem to be generally treated as political pawns or by parents as extensions of themselves, rather than as individual people that need assistance learning and growing up.

meowster··on Family medicine is in decline
My best friend since high school is a doctor. Hearing all the bullshit that she had to go through, the different selection processes, abuse (scheduling), etc; it's crazy.

It doesn't weed out people who will be bad doctors, it weeds out people that can't handle the abuse.

meowster··on Kroger and Walmart deny 'surge pricing' after adopting digital price tags
> not allowed to raise prices more than once per day

They can still do surge pricing if the raise it once (and lower it once) per day.

meowster··on Ion engines could take us to the solar gravitational lens in less than 13 years
> it still seems to be the best system, something which I do not see changing as long as humans remain in control of society.

I agree. Humans can be bad, and bad people can participate in markets.

Until you get rid of bad people (that's a scary thought on what that would entail), all forms of economic systems can be used for bad things.

meowster··on Tesla's Cybertruck is outselling almost every other EV in the US
Literally every cybertruck I see has not had any business logo whatsoever on them.
meowster··on Before you buy a domain name, first check to see if it's haunted
I have an interesting 3-letter.net

I set up a catch-all for personal use and wasn't expecting to get flooded with emails.

I was getting business emails, people trying to send money by Zelle, etc.

I was kind of hoping to get something good that I could take action on in the market, so I left it on for a little bit, but then I felt bad that people's emails were not getting answered (at least bouncing), so I turned off the catch-all. Oh well.

meowster··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
I know at least one person who votes based off a publication. As for changing minds, I have no idea if this person even considered who to vote for until the publication releases their endorsements.
meowster··on Company named "><SCRIPT SRC=HTTPS://MJT.XSS.HT> LTD" forced to change it (2020)
It sounds like they're going to hate that in the future when they have to fill out paperwork and argue with bureaucracies that say their documents/paperwork don't/doesn't match.
meowster··on Boeing 787s must be reset every 51 days or 'misleading data' is shown (2020)
It looks like that was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Air_Lines_Flight_1080
meowster··on Post World War II Food
I think if people try a spam musubi first (a Hawaiian staple), they'll be more inclined to try other forms of spam.
meowster··on He Died Building a Ship for the U.S. Government. His Family Got Nothing
It's a terrible situation, although it seems like their legal remedy is filing a lawsuit against the parties involved.

Immigration status should not have prevented the dangerous working conditions as indicated by the OSHA fines.

Not a lawyer, but I would the the fact that OSHA found issues would help the family's civil case. Hopefully there is someone who can take it on contingency.

meowster··on Can A.I. be blamed for a teen's suicide?
It sounds like they need to get other parents involved and go to the school board and have them create a policy where only Google Classroom or whatever is whitelisted.

Other parents are going to fight that though because it's a free pacifier for their kids.

meowster··on The Incredible Machine (1968) [video]
I'm guessing they're engineers trying to re-enact their jobs while trying to act naturally in front of a camera. This might be harder for people who didn't grow up with the presence of cameras (and the sense that they're always on display) like later generations.
meowster··on Post-postal: What did we lose when we stopped writing letters?
They also made a cool website where you could type in your address and it would use Google Satellite and Street View images to make a personal music video. HN discussion from when it came out:
