zero-to-one ux designer in sf -usually I help startups design the first versions of products (and figure out if the product is worth building in the first place) -currently exploring some new ideas -besides tech, I'm in love with architecture, solo travel, getting less bad at cooking, and painting -aspirational dog owner but I travel too much

Random idea: What if all the activity notifications arrived at the same time, eg 8pm every day? If any interactions depend on people being synchronously online together, notifications could be a strong way to make those features work when people don't have a ton of friends on this yet.
meisterbrendan··on Ask HN: Who is looking for a co-founder? (July 2021)
Visual chat | CTO

Unusual opinion alert: We think the future of chat starts with a better GIF camera. What we’ve built so far is basically like GIPHY or TENOR but all the GIFs are you and your friends. Not to flex, but it’s really fun to use. Just wrapped building the beta.

When you’re close with a group of people, you mimic each other: use similar words, slang, gestures, opinions. What we’re trying to do is build shared visual language. Instead of sending a emoji, send a GIF of yourself or a friend doing a party dance. Instead of sending a gif of Shaq doing a shimmy dance, make your own. Instagram filters made everyday people feel like their photos were good enough to share. We’ll make people feel like their gifs are expressive enough to share. You have to try it. It feels nonobvious until you try it. It’s not quite there yet but we’re not far off.

I’m a product designer…. Up until two weeks ago I freelanced designing the first versions of things for YC teams. (Warmly S20, Virtually S20, Zaam W20, Zippi S19). In prior lives built stuff for Intel, Intuit and Intercom.

I’m working with a crazy talented engineer (built Safari for the original iPhone launch) doing it for the cause but he has a family and won’t want to do this for more than a few months.

From a technology perspective we’re doing a lot of stuff with images and video, plus generalist “let’s move fast and learn” things. Over time we’ll invest in letting people deepfake themselves to make gifs and memes based on what is trending in their interest graph and the people we’re talking to.

This is gonna be a slog. We’re going to have to do the best work of our careers to have a shadow of a chance. This is a big bet. If we do it right, we have a chance to build the way everyone talks to each other.

Email me! I’m weird, often in useful ways. What the hell: maybe we’ll change the world.

So the Zoom feature is cool. It's made for task-oriented things, like an activity divided into small groups and the person organizing it is the organizer of the event. It's highly structured. The analog version of what zoom has is a breakout session at a corporate retreat. The organizer of the event is in control and you retain your groups.

What I want to see is a user navigating rooms herself. The interactions I imagine are pretty different even though the functionality is superficially similar. This is early, I'm sure my thinking will change a lot. Thanks for the link though!

I'm a designer here in SF. I'm VERY EARLY in exploring an idea. The problem: calls where I'm trying to catch up with more than 5 or so friends aren't great. If you think about an actual house party, there's a room with music playing where you hang out and don't talk so much, but there are also other spaces, like talking by the food table or going to get a drink and striking up a conversation. None of those constructs, where the space dictates the interaction, exist in video apps that I'm aware of. Basically I'm interested in making large, remote video events feel intimate and think that the concept of "rooms" that you can move into or out of, while still being part of the main event, are pretty key. Right now just starting with some user research. Any smart designers/engineers/product people--even if you just want to noodle about the problem for 15 min--are most welcome to reach out.
meisterbrendan··on Twitter to ban political advertising
Can you talk more about how those laws work in Denmark?

I’m extremely interested in the idea that a society has incentivized both a robust free press and accountability to speak the truth...

If that is the case it seems like those lessons would be very useful to democracies the world over.

meisterbrendan··on Jumpstarting the Market for Accessory Dwelling Units
do these units trigger the NIMBY impulses of neighbors? It seems like a great way to increase density in otherwise restrictive development environments, but could also see pushback from neighbors in having a lot more construction in the neighborhood.

meisterbrendan··on Twitter, to Save Itself, Must Scale Back World-Swallowing Ambitions
You're mostly right. There is a lot more sophistication now, but most of the advances facebook has made are in two areas:

-Mobile. Making messaging a central strength of the platform. Figuring this out is a big piece of why the stock is doing so well. -Conversations. Facebook has become the default place for people to discuss (or, more accurately, shout about) media/news. I mean both news from external sources and personal life events.

Everything else is reorganizations of existing features in new ways, like the shift from the wall to the timeline. It was a new feature that better fit an existing goal, not an expansion in the scope of the service.

meisterbrendan··on Since 2010, Gun Stores Have Grown 4.7 Times Faster Than the Population
Guns make suicide attempts more deadly. Places with fewer guns do have proportionally more deaths from other types of suicide attempts, but the overall suicide levels are still substantially lower. Suicide ruminations may be frequent, but suicide attempts are often impulsive.

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/magazine-features/guns-and-suici...

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2013/1...

Your point about CA having the most gun deaths falls flat: CA has far and away the most people in the US. Gun deaths per capita is the interesting, relevant statistic. California is actually pretty high here too; it has more gun deaths per capita than Texas, though gun ownership rates are far lower in CA. Anyone know why? My best guess is that the gun ownership rates rely on legal sales, but gun homicide rates don't. So California, because of strict rules, has proportionately more illegal guns (perhaps purchased in lax states, like Texas).

meisterbrendan··on Show HN: Keep, an app that helps you love how you spend every dollar
Thanks for the feedback. The perspective you articulate is exactly what we're trying to do with money management. A lot of people feel pretty bummed when they think about managing their money, and consequently avoid thinking about it and realizing that they could derive more short and long term satisfaction with the ways they spend their money. We think that a positive, visceral experience can help people reframe their relationship with their money and ultimately derive more satisfaction--aka, "love"--the way they are spending their money.
