mech422··on Ask HN: Should homes have the option to reject all mail delivery?
Ahh - I think that was my issue ... I wanted to stop junk mail, but not mail addressed to me. I still wanted to be able to 'important' stuff...
mech422··on Ask HN: Should homes have the option to reject all mail delivery?
Unfortunately, that means you still get everything addressed to 'resident'... Last time I checked, there was no way to stop those at all :-/

I just got a p.o. box and pretend my mailbox doesn't exist

mech422··on Who do you think is the most insane programmer of our current era?
Call me old fashioned...but I've always like Carmack. The dude has done _everything_ :-D
mech422··on Things I wish I knew when I got my 3D printer
1. Learn you slicer settings! Support setting in particular can make a huge difference

2. Different brands of filament may need different printing temperatures.

3. Use printables, thingiverse, cult3d, yeggi, etc to find models to print :-)

4. ABS fumes are poisonous (formaldehyde)

mech422··on Dear sir, you have built a compiler (2022)
Yeah ... the Camel book was awesome. I remember being amazed how fast it got you writing really useful perl scripts.
mech422··on Dear sir, you have built a compiler (2022)
Larry Wall would agree :-D
mech422··on Help Improve Keyboardminder: What Features or Changes Would You Like to See?
Nice :-) It looks like a cool project ... My personal 'wish' would be a split keyboard with an 'electric eraser' setup as a thumb stick. Trackball/thumball would be second best. I agree having to reach for the mouse really slows stuff down...
mech422··on Help Improve Keyboardminder: What Features or Changes Would You Like to See?
Not my thing - but looks like a nice project :-) I noticed your profile mentioned being an 'aspiring developer' - it's really cool to see people jump in and code tools/stuff that is useful to them :-)

I'm not a cpp coder, so I can't speak to the code - but I didn't notice any tests (sorry if I missed them). That might be a good addition ?

edit: I noticed you mention psychology in your profile. Might be interesting to hear your thoughts on UI design/interaction ?

mech422··on Why did Windows 95 setup use three operating systems?
That used to be ReiserFS's claim to fame - tail packing small files. Doesn't seem like any FS has really optimized small file handling since then.
mech422··on We are shutting down Ondsel
I just can't get into the web based ones...I don't know why but they all seem slow and clunky to me. One thing I didn't like about alibre is the lack of Linux (or Mac) version, as I plan on ditching MS once my win10 box is unusable - I have no interest in that new AI crap MS is adding.
mech422··on We are shutting down Ondsel
I did the free trial and it seemed ok - but I had too many bad habits from fusion...one thing that always tripped me up was the limit of 1 sketch per 'part'(?). It seemed to enforce 'best practices' much more then Fusion does, and I just tinker with hobby projects. They were very attentive though, and even called a few times to see how I was doing...

Also, I really liked the 1 time purchase vs. subscription

mech422··on We are shutting down Ondsel
Alibre (1) seems pretty popular with makers (good cnc support?). Not OSS but its a one time $200 purchase - sorta surprising you can still buy software these days :-P Alibre is more of a professional tool like Fusion 360, so there is some learning curve.

mech422··on Experiments in social media trust/moderation
oh sorry ... I'm guessing its too late to edit it now
mech422··on Experiments in social media trust/moderation
Given all the talk about moderation in social media, I thought people might be interested in Advogato an early experiment in web-of-trust based communties. Kuro5hin(1) is another one that might be of interest...

mech422··on The older we get, the later we think 'old age' starts
yeah - I think 'old' being someone older then yourself is basically the dictionary definition of it :-P
mech422··on OpenFyde: Open-Source Version of FydeOS
I wish there was more info on the homepage... what is special about FydeOS? is it a chromium clone ? an RTOS ? Does it support Networking (it seems to support some sort of graphics, as it mentions builds for various intel chips).

We have sooo many choices for fun new OS's lately: Genode, Haiku, QNX, bunches of RTOS's. So many choices, soo little time :-P

mech422··on Seer: A GUI front end to GDB for Linux
yeah - the 'data display' part was the real killer feature :-)
mech422··on Seer: A GUI front end to GDB for Linux
oh nice - reminds me of DDD(1) DDD was like magic first time I saw it. Oh wow - DDD is still maintained ?? :-D

mech422··on Rust Koans
Hehe..that was pretty good :-)
mech422··on A cycling desk / Zwifting with a split keyboard
Dactyls look interesting too (1). Personally, I'm thinking an 'electric eraser' mounted as a thumb stick would be good too.

mech422··on We built a self-healing system to survive a concurrency bug at Netflix
>> Thanks for playing Wing Commander!

captain america voice I got that reference :-)

mech422··on We built a self-healing system to survive a concurrency bug at Netflix
LOL - I like that one! :-)
mech422··on LED lights on underside of surfboards may deter great white shark attacks
Heh - even great whites can't stand LEDs :-P
mech422··on Linux Asceticism
Hmm - I'm not sure those sorts of things would require a fork per se, but I can see making it more familiar to windows/mac users could be a good thing. I was just curious as I was a big KDE fan back when I used Linux full time, and wondered what had changed.

The two biggest issues I'd have with Linux full time would be audio and video. I haven't even attempted to run Linux audio in like 5-10 years - it was always so titchy with multiple 'standards' to configure. Video was not quite as bad, as I don't game much so I just needed basic functionality. But now I have multiple 4k monitors, high dpi, and all that jazz, I don't know how big a pain it would be. I just run linux in VMs (standard device drivers and setup) or ssh into a linux server for now.

mech422··on Linux Asceticism
What exactly would change ? Only thing I can think of 'normal' users using is ctrl-c/ctrl-v which already work in KDE (even ctrl-win-arrow for virtual desktops could be configured without a fork.)? Different icons/shortcuts wouldn't require forking KDE...Not sure what else you'd change?
mech422··on QNX is now free for anything non-commercial, plus there's an RPi image
Will Photon be available as well ?
mech422··on ReiserFS and the Art and Artist Problem
Isn't she a martial arts champion? I don't think she'd murder easy... :-P
mech422··on Ask HN: How much money do you spend each month?
Umm...unless I added wrong - that ~ $5700/month, which is 68K/year. While commenable - I don't think your surviving on $60K/year ??
mech422··on Why so few Matt Levines?
Gotta Love Derek... "Things I won't work with" actually got me to read some of his other stuff about how drug development and trials work.
mech422··on 1 in 6 Companies Are Hesitant to Hire Recent College Graduates
Yeah - I find it 'odd' that people think they should be able to get a job in a month or with only sending out 20 resumes...Things have been so good the last 10+ years, that seems to be the 'new normal' and now its tightened up again, people are shocked.

I always figure 3-6 months to find a good position, probably because I started in the 80s and remember all the tight job markets between then and now. For me, 3-6 months seemed to be 'normal'.

I guess its a huge shock when all you've seen are the 'good times', but all fields/careers go thru boom-bust cycles. I seem to recall hearing we had a glut of lawyers and new grads couldn't find work.
