mdhen··on There was nothing “wasted” about my youth spent clubbing on ecstasy (2021)
Those people clearly have not done MDMA
mdhen··on Spain scraps VAT on basic food to help with rising cost of living
VAT and sales tax are different though, VAT is included in the list price. Sales tax is added on.
mdhen··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
and where is the one you've found?
mdhen··on History of Techno
not just techno, also house
mdhen··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
if you've got Android I recommend getting barinsta, it's on fdroid. just gives you a chronological feed of your friends posts.
mdhen··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
I recommend getting an es100 to pair with wired headphones
mdhen··on NASA mission to Venus in 1978 may have detected phosphine, a gas related to life
it's always seemed to me that the serious problem with Venus is it's rotation speed. if it wasn't so slow I think you could turn it into a legitimately nice planet very long term. Mars on the other hand lacks the necessary macros, it's likely always going to be a rough place to live.
mdhen··on Netflix is creating a problem by cancelling TV shows too soon
Stephen King sits down every day and writes x amount of pages. 10 or 15 maybe, been awhile since I've read on writing but he talks about it in there. He is not super concerned about the quality of it, he just wants to get it out there. If those pages end up as part of an actual book then he'll obviously be going back over them etc. I assume Sanderson operates very similarly.

GRRM on the other hand agonizes over writing out perfect rough draft pages and thus never gets anything done.

mdhen··on What is the best dumb TV?
yeah I've got the last model plasma that panasonic made. it's got absolutely incredible image quality, you just need to be okay with not having 4k. and it is dumb.
mdhen··on Mexican states are moving to ban the sale of junk food to children
OP here is correct. PUFAs are the baddies. This is way too large a subject for me to even try backing up atm but I do recommend you do research into it.
mdhen··on Some people who take psychedelics continue hallucinating indefinitely
You essentially did everything wrong. I'm a bit amazed actually.
mdhen··on San Francisco Becomes First U.S. City to Pass an E-Cigarette Ban
What Australia does that other countries don't do in terms of packaging is they completely block out the branding of a pack. So like in Thailand for instance you'll have a regular Marlboro pack with a picture on the back of diseased lungs or whatever. In Australia they block out the designs of packs branding so they're just dark brown with health warnings and in white text somewhere they'll say Marlboro lights or whatever they are.
mdhen··on HBO Ending Its Nightly Newscast Produced by Vice Media
Those shows that provide entertainment are the reason hbo could show anything by vice in the first place. Do we need more sopranos? GoT? The wire? Deadwood? Carnival? Etc.

That's the whole point of HBO. Entertainment that at least tries to be high quality. Will succession meet that mark? No idea, they're only one season in. But if they fail they will not be the first hbo show to do so.

mdhen··on Ask HN: Do all VPNs suck?
I specifically called out binance because LE is highly unlikely to get access to their logs. But it's a remote possibility yes. Chipmixer or services similar always have the possibility, however remote, of your money disappearing.
mdhen··on Ask HN: Do all VPNs suck?
For an added layer of anonymity I would move what you buy on coinbase to binance and trade it for another currency. So for example buy litecoin on coinbase, move to binance. Trade that for Bitcoin and pay using that.
mdhen··on ‘High Likelihood of Human Civilization Coming to an End’ Starting in 2050
We are actually still in an ice age, although currently in a warming period known as an interglacial. All of human civilization has occurred in our present ice age.

The ice age will end when the large ice sheets still covering land are gone. That's mostly Greenland. At which point the world will be a total mess.

mdhen··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
Different, but focus is using the same engine that fenix does.
mdhen··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
The current build of Firefox for Android is being sunsetted soon, last noon security update is going to be in July. The version they are moving to, Firefox fenix is very fast. At the moment I don't think it has sync enabled (so no sign in) but the future looks good there.
mdhen··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
For now yeah, I believe the plan long term is to move the desktop version to it as well
mdhen··on Should Failing Phish Tests Be a Fireable Offense?
Right, which is why you need a more secure system of entry. I've worked in finance and defense. Finance used turnstiles, defense used some light in person security.
mdhen··on The preachers getting rich from poor Americans
Check out the hardcore history episode "prophets of doom". It takes place shortly after the Reformation, when anabaptism was a new thing. It's crazy.
mdhen··on EU must adopt ‘EU English’ as its official working language after Brexit (2017)
Due to not having an alphabet and being tonal I highly doubt Mandarin is ever going to be the lingua Franca. It's just too hard for non native speakers to learn.
mdhen··on Neal Stephenson: Tech Moguls, Brain Science, and Fall: Or Dodge in Hell
I enjoyed seveneves. It's certainly not as good as cryptonomicon or anathem but totally worthwhile
mdhen··on Someone in New York is pulling emergency brakes, destroying subway commute
The motorman has to move from the back to front, if he's staying on. Or he's off and someone else is taking over. So yeah they're there for at least like 10min.

Or the train is being removed from service. That's not really going to happen in the middle of the night but definitely happens during times when they are decreasing service (after rush hour, after like 11pn)

mdhen··on A little-noticed surge across the U.S.-Mexico border: Americans heading south
Except the colonizers of Mexico were Spanish. They definitely did not speak English
mdhen··on When Women Outrun Men
Yeah doing a lot of anaerobic activities when on a zero or Ultra low carb diet will tend to wear you out quicklydue to glycogen depletion.
mdhen··on Huge study finds drugs stop HIV transmission
Your worries are misplaced. Three drugs are what keep them undetectable. And once you are there for a period of time (3 months to be safe) you stay that way forever as long as you take your medication as prescribed. Once they are at that point they will be getting blood tests every 6 months.

So really you need to be trusting that they are responsible enough to take their drugs every day. These days that is pretty easy, most people take 1 pill in the morning and that's it.

mdhen··on Huge study finds drugs stop HIV transmission
It means undetectable, so the hiv rna test has a lower limit. Say 12 copies per ml. Undetectable means it is below the level.

You'd normally want to be UD for 3 months before engaging in unprotected sex with your informed partner.

mdhen··on Huge study finds drugs stop HIV transmission
It's very easy to see if they got infected by their partner. Their hiv resistance tests, which everyone does prior to starting treatment, will match.

Not sure if that's the part you're having a hard time with or not.

mdhen··on Huge study finds drugs stop HIV transmission
The drugs a specific person is taking today will be effective forever as long as they take them every day as prescribed. Hiv mutates when doses are missed or you take less than 3 drugs to combat it. There exists no future in which hiv drugs we're using today suddenly become ineffective.

A subset of the population will become resistant to certain classes of drugs, because people do stop taking drugs etc. And gain resistance, then pass that on, but for a specific individual their current regimen should be good for as long as they take it. Realistically people change drugs every so often as better drugs with lies side effects are released, but not because of new resistance development.

Now this did used to be a bit if an issue since people had to take multiple pills at different times a day. Having to do that makes missing doses easier, and then resistance can develop. But these days most people are on a single pill taken once a day that completely eliminates that risk.

You're thinking of this like antibiotics, when it's really not a comparable situation.
