mdesq··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I thought they weren't removing Rosetta until macOS 28. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102527
mdesq··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
Most often diesel engines (I used to be an auto mechanic). Even passenger car diesels can take 10+ quarts. Gas engines typically take less oil but big engines can still take 5-7+.
mdesq··on Tech CEOs are apparently suffering from AI psychosis
I've seen director / VP-level folks at a public company point LLMs at a corporate product and essentially ask it "What deficiencies do you see here? Output to a Word document." Then forward the output to engineering management as a product task list. One person did this to the same product more than once in a couple week span without realizing it so there were multiple documents with conflicting issue lists floating around trying to be read and triaged. And the expectation is that this comprehensive analysis was done so easily, product fixes should be just as easy.
mdesq··on GitHub Copilot is moving to usage-based billing
I have to wonder if it's because of how many Enterprise customers they have who have standardized on Github Copilot and gotten it through the gauntlet of legal approvals etc.
mdesq··on All it takes is for one to work out
Was he in banking? For some reason I was under the impression he was a lawyer and partner in a major Seattle law firm.
mdesq··on CVC acquires majority stake in Namecheap for $1.5B
namesilo has been decent for me

mdesq··on Ask HN: Resources for Fluency with Pandas?
This is one area where I find ChatGPT to be quite decent.
mdesq··on Don’t call it a comeback: Java is still champ
FizzBuzz Enterprise Edition [1] is an oldie but a goodie worth a re-mention.

mdesq··on First Human Case of Rabies in Illinois Since 1954
Someone close to me works with this guy, who was a total hero last year. Obviously, he had to go through all the treatments. https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/aggressive-coyote-stran...
mdesq··on Starlink review, four months in
I have Starlink at my home located in a rural area where the only alternative is DSL at ~1.0MBPS average downlink. Using Starlink made it possible to actually do interactive work from the house without tethering to my spotty LTE service or traveling to a better location. My own experience is that the service has been quite reliable (often 12 hour stretches without an outage), but I do have unobstructed views of the sky. I do find that streaming audio/video can be glitchy and I usually have some kind of audio issues.
mdesq··on Nextdoor is replacing the small-town paper
This is my experience (greater Raleigh, NC). It's people asking for referrals for painters or experiences with various Internet service providers. Or lost dogs; so many lost/found dogs.
mdesq··on Google illegally spied on workers before firing them, US labor board alleges
Agreed. It's not surprising at all since they don't want to manage a bunch of different contracts. However, I'm of the opinion (and I am a lawyer) that the contracts should then always be especially construed even more strictly than usual against the drafter.
mdesq··on Americans, it turns out, would rather visit a store than buy food online
Shipt does the same thing for some stores they deliver from. They claim something like a 15% markup average, but in reality from our own experimentation on items we most frequently purchased, it often hit 35-100% markups and higher. (Actual examples: a $5 watermelon for $12; a dozen store brand eggs $0.99 in the store but $2.99 from Shipt). Add tips and it's rarely worth it for us anymore.
mdesq··on Amazon Isn’t the Only Shop Online
Home Depot and Lowes do this same thing with certain items like dishwashers. It's obnoxious. Their website will show that they have "1 left in stock" but it's the demo model that's installed in a rack of cabinets and not for sale.
mdesq··on Americans Coping with the Coronavirus Are Clogging Toilets
Companies shouldn't be permitted to call something "flushable" if over half of the country's sewer facilities say they are a problem.
mdesq··on Don't rinse with water straight after toothbrushing
That's why my dentist recommends a fluoride mouthwash after brushing.
mdesq··on My fridge has an RFID chip in the water filter, so a generic filter doesn't work
I'm fairly certain GE also builds timers into the system to "expire" filters on either water volume or time (e.g., six months).
mdesq··on Why I Quit Using Google
I'm somewhat surprised Google hasn't taken the old Microsoft route of just charging per call for support on their free accounts. MS used to be $300 way back IIRC. Google could probably charge $500.
mdesq··on The world’s best bush plane is destroyed on take off in Reno

mdesq··on LastPass bug leaks credentials from previous site
I will look into this. I do trust certain family members with access to my vault password, but the notification of access and ability to give access to a trusted third party (my lawyer) that is available with LP is very compelling.
mdesq··on LastPass bug leaks credentials from previous site
I've love to switch away from LastPass. I switched to LastPass Families when it came out due to their "digital contingency plan" so family members (or the trusted family attorney) can get access to passwords rather conveniently if I or another family member passes away. At the time, I didn't see that other offerings made this as easy. Any other good options out there for this use case?
mdesq··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
I watch Stranger Things and The Office re-runs on business trips. Once The Office is gone I'll be gone as well.
mdesq··on Unshaky – Tries to address double key press issue on Apple's butterfly keyboard
Macbook Computer Augmentation Software (MCAS)?
mdesq··on Firefox Private Network
It appears to have been a limited survey they rolled out to some Firefox users. My browser just showed a message asking something like "do you want to try something new?" with a button that led to this page.
mdesq··on 2015 MacBook Pro recall: batteries overheating
Mine was like that. So badly swollen the touchpad was almost impossible to press. I replaced the battery myself and it really wasn't bad at all. Less than an hour roundtrip using the "string method" (I saw it on a YouTube video) to slice through the tape they use to glue the battery down. The worst part was trying to clean off the old adhesive before putting in the new battery. This method is really non-invasive because you don't have to pull off a bunch of other parts.
mdesq··on Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements (1908)
Also lubricated with grease or even bathed in oil which serves as a cushion.
mdesq··on America’s Cities Are Running on Software from the ’80s
A few years ago, I met guy in my travels who seemed quite carefree and just enjoying frequent international travel with his spouse, funding various art initiatives, etc. Turns out he wrote some utility-related software for a large American city back in the 80s and has nice a recurring revenue stream from that. Other than some now very occasional support requirements, it's essentially just a source of passive income. He said switching costs would be too great, and there's no need to change something that's working.
mdesq··on Sears has another chance to avoid closing down
Craftsman tools has its own story, but over the years they started creating lower quality tool lines and eroded the brand. It used to be a major go-to line of tools especially for entry-level professional mechanics (as I used to be) as they were very good quality US-made tools with a great warranty at a fraction of the price of Snap-on or the like.
mdesq··on The Science Behind Making Your Child Smarter
>You can get smarter by reading and people should be told that.

I'm really interested in this because I have someone who keeps telling me this isn't possible. Do you have a source by any chance?
