mdesq··on Devices Which Track Cellphones, Intercept Calls Found All Over DC, MD, VA
I believe he switched to an iPhone. [1] I was at an analytics event this year where they were analyzing his tweets based on the originating platform. 1. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/donald-...

mdesq··on Blue Apron to Sell Meal Kits in Stores to Buttress Sagging Deliveries
Publix does this at a few stores as well[1]. In my particular local Publix which doesn't have the full kits, they still have the recipes, ingredients, and even someone handing out prepared samples of one or two final products all in one place in the store. The ingredients are just normally packaged, not perfectly portioned out.

mdesq··on “The Problem Child of Seasonal Flu”: Beware This Winter’s Virus
Similar anecdote here. Everyone living in our house got the shot, with the exception of the newborn infant who was too young to get it. The infant was the only one who got the full-blown flu (very scary, but they are fine now). Everyone else who had any symptoms just got a case of what seemed to be a bad two day cold.

I've heard differing opinions as to whether the shot really helps cases be less severe if you do get it, but I've heard a lot of similar stories recently.

Wild Oats was bought by WF, but that purchase was later reversed.[1] I used to be a Wild Oats shopper myself.

mdesq··on Inside Blue Apron’s Meal Kit Machine
Packaging is exactly my main issue with these as well (HelloFresh has been our favorite too). I go to the local farmers' market every weekend and could go to another nearby one more frequently; I wish someone would coordinate the recipes, instructions, and quantities from local ingredients. I'd happily pay extra to just pick up the raw ingredients collected together with some instruction sheets on what to make when.

They basically merged with (took a controlling interest in?) Sprint a few years ago. That's when I found out who they were.
mdesq··on Show HN: AutoMicroFarm Is Ready for Shipping
That's very cool. I'm actually on my HOA board (but the ARC is a delegated function) and know a few people have gardens without any trouble.

Incidentally, the first comment I received was about "farmed fish."

mdesq··on Show HN: AutoMicroFarm Is Ready for Shipping
I was thrilled to see you're an RTP-based company. I'm on the other side of Raleigh from you, but I shared this with my community and now need to do some measuring to figure out how much grading I'd have to do to install one of these and then figure out what my HOA would say. :)

Have you gone through a winter in this area with the unit in a greenhouse? Any reports on how that worked out?

mdesq··on Changes to Evernote’s Pricing Plans
I've been interested in an alternative for a while, but have been too lazy to spend much time looking. I primarily use two Evernote features: writing plain text notes, and on taking quick, easy (and stored) screenshots using their keyboard shortcuts.
mdesq··on Why suburbia sucks
I live in the Triangle area of NC, but if you know what to look for, you can find the same thing elsewhere. CO is another great place.
mdesq··on Why suburbia sucks
I agree. I live in a small suburban development abutting several larger ones. There are miles of safe walking/jogging sidewalks and roadsides, I can enter the local mountain biking trails that go for miles just at the end of my street, and I can walk down to the small local lake to go fishing with my kid. Plus, the community is especially friendly and there are always neighbors outside chatting, having impromptu get-togethers, or planning the next community coffee or book club. A walk down to the mailbox on a Friday afternoon is as likely as not to have a neighbor hand you a beer or glass of wine while you have a chat and watch the kids practice riding their bikes where there's plenty of room for them to learn. There are downsides to be sure, like anything else, but I didn't grow up in the suburbs and I enjoy it.

At some point, these platforms become "utilities" and should be regulated similarly to other utilities.
mdesq··on MA, CA take the top spots in Bloomberg's index of innovative states
The success record at enforcing them is pretty good, actually. There was a court case some years back enforcing a non-compete and now companies have gotten bolder at going after people. I speak from a little experience, having hired a MA employment lawyer on one of these issues and the non-compete prevented my accepting of either of two job offers.
mdesq··on The two faces of Airbnb
My experience with Craigslist is that there are huge numbers of one-off dealers selling under the "by owner" category.
mdesq··on Atlassian Planning U.S. IPO
BitBucket is pretty sweet IMHO, but then again it was an acquisition. I completely agree on Jira and Bamboo.
mdesq··on Drug Goes from $13.50 a Tablet to $750, Overnight
It seems like drug manufacturers should be regulated as utilities in some regard. Sure, you can have competition, but at some point your products become so important for normal societal life that you are regulated as to how much you can charge, or how much you can increase costs.
mdesq··on Posture for a Healthy Back
I've always driven with the most (comfortable) distance between me and the steering wheel. My reasoning has been that maybe I'm safer when there's more space between me and the windshield, steering wheel, etc. and that there's a tiny bit more time for that airbag to inflate should the need arise.
mdesq··on What happens when you talk about salaries at Google
These big tech companies only love "transparency" when it's other people's data they want to look through.
mdesq··on WooThemes joins Automattic
Exactly. It's a free car that a ton of people drive and lots of auto shops work on but that German mechanics think is an embarrassment.
mdesq··on WooThemes joins Automattic
The ease of installation, upgrades, and enhancement (plugin installation) was what made it really stand out. It wasn't always as mature as it is now, but it was always a little bit ahead.
